At 1 pm today, the Barclay's Center and the New York Islanders will be holding a press conference to announce the move of the Islanders from Long Island to Brooklyn. I do not know the time frame of when this move will happen.

Edit: The lease ends in 2015. They can move after that.

As a lifelong Islanders fan, I am happy it is Brooklyn as I expected them to head to Canada. I am just curious if they stick with the "New York Islanders" or change it to the "Brooklyn _______". If they change to Brooklyn, there is no way they keep the Islanders name.

This might actually draw some free agents to the Islanders and will keep the rivalry with the Rangers strong.

As a fan of the Islanders, I am happy.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

I'm pretty sure they'll keep the New York Islanders name. They ain't moving from Jersey, for one thing; for another, I'm pretty sure they're going to want to try and retain as much of their fanbase as possible since A) they're straying into Rangers territory with this move (something the Nets could get away with since they chose to adopt the identity of the borough) and B) the fanbase really isn't to blame for this move happening.

And frankly, the fanbase is lucky the team is staying in the area. After repeatedly getting dicked around by the thugs that run the local town government and having the referendum rejected by a short-sighted voter base ill-informed about what the repercussions of rejection would be, Wang had every justification to abandon the area to the Rangers and Devils and go somewhere where he'd be appreciated (with Quebec City definitely being a prime option). Everyone involved in blocking the redevelopment of the Coliseum is getting exactly what they deserve, and it'll be sad to see the Coliseum dark and all those jobs lost (and the last laugh will be on the voters who voted no, because their taxes will go up anyway to make up for the lost revenue).

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

So, just the Brooklyn Islanders, then?

The NHL intends for them to stay the New York Islanders. It should be fine, they weren't the Nassau Islanders before, after all.

Exactly. This should be a non-issue. Just like when the Washington Redskins left the city and moved 8 miles down the road to Landover, MD and stayed the Washington Redskins.

At least with this case, they're still in the same state/area. Until I looked it up just now on wikipedia, I assumed the Islanders were actually based in NYC, not up the road in Uniondale. Brooklyn is still on Long Island so this shouldn't change a thing.

Wang was on Mike Francesa's show this afternoon, and he stated flat-out that the name would stay "New York Islanders", and that the logo and colors would remain as they are as well. Also, Potvin still sucks. (OK, he didn't SAY that, but....)

I tend to forget that Brooklyn is actually on Long Island, but it is, so it's really not so strange.

It doesn't matter where the islanders play or what they are called. I will always hate them and Potvin will always suck.

Let's Go Rangers !

Interesting, because I read an article today (deadspin.com) where someone pointed out that Queens & Brooklyn are not on the map that's on the Islanders logo.

Oh, and not only will Potvin suck, I'm pretty sure DiPietro will NOT be the goalie for their games.

Wow, I must have missed the memo that changed the NHL into the NBA. Hockey is the last sport where I ever would have expected something like this to happen. I hope no one is secretly plotting to kill me; I don't have an extra 10 gr to spare right now.
