Jim Riggleman, apparently unhappy about the fact that management wouldn't look at renewing his contract, resigned today. What makes it even crazier is that he does on the heels of a walk-off win for the Nationals and a hot streak where they are now above .500 for the season. I guess he figured this would be the highlight of their season and got out while the getting was good. I'd like to imagine him saying 'I'M OUT BITCH!!!' and slamming the door off the hinges when he announced his departure.

I am shocked and absolutely pissed about this. As good as we've been doing lately, as positive as the locker room has been, we should have given Riggleman an extension, goddammit.

Now if the wheels fall off the wagon because we have to adjust to a new manager, I'll be REALLY pissed off.

Not getting an extension is one thing, but Riggleman needs to realize he was contractually obligated to manage the team for the rest of the year and they are actually in the wild card race. What team is going to touch a guy who quit on his team mid-season to be a manager in the future? Even the craziness of the Orioles is out of the question because Showalter is some sort of divine presence, or at least it seems so when watching MASN and seeing the 10 foot Buck Showalter banner hanging behind the announcers.

It wasn't even that he wanted a raise or an extension, he just wanted the 2012 team option on his contract guaranteed. Apparently he feared that he was just the placeholder, and if the Nats looked ready to contend management was going to cut him out and bring in a bigger name guy.

Gotta give Riggs credit for the ballsiness, as this is the sort of move that can get a guy shut out of any future jobs. There's only 29 other GMs, and they all saw you pull the punk card on your old boss. (I trust that he has his FU money all set aside.)

The "Natinals" deserve everything and anything like this. Overpaying for free agents, the arm falling off of their star pitching prospect, coaches dropping out mid-season for getting over 500. Everything and anything, all day everyday.

Plus theres an added element of strategy involved. Am I the only one who enjoys seeing a well executed double switch? I didn't think so. Different topic, but I've gotta ask these questions anyway.
