Saw Iron Man 2 earlier today, and I was impressed.

To me it seemed like there was a lot of story to be covered and due to the fast pace they managed to keep it going.

It was interesting to see Stark/Iron Man actually getting hit from left and right (enemies, government and his health) so it wasn't like the first movie where he was pretty much the savior all the way.

Rourke as Whiplash was good, the way he played his character he was just the total anti-Stark (the flashy guy who has it all vs the bitter man who never had the chance)

I loved the character of Justin Hammer, who basically also just wanted to be Tony and be the big dog.
I thought Sam Rockwell played it extremely well, being able to go from creep to hilarious in a few seconds.

Oh, the Black Widow does some awesome wrestling style moves that would make the best Luchas proud. And she whips out a nice submission move too in her 'sparring' match with JOhn Favreau's character.

Nick Fury has a much larger role in this one (as expected) and with that typical Sam Jackson delivery, his scenes are damn good.

Then of course there is the nods to the Avengers.
Cap's shield is in there. And I love what Tony does with it.
We have Tony wanting to study a file called "Avengers Initiative" and Fury tells him "its not just about you anymore"

And then of course there is the end scene after the credits.
Do NOT leave. And well..to be honest I pretty much squealed.

Very much a thumbs up movie. I loved it about as much as I loved Iron Man 1.

Oh, and War Machine is cool too. When Rhodey first dons the suit it's almost no big deal, but he makes up for that later.

Saw it last night.

The short, spoiler-free version.
Liked it, but there was WAY too much going on for my liking so it wound up being merely good rather than awesome.

Longer, slightly spoiler-ish version.
There's a lot to like about the movie, particularly on the acting side of things. Downey Jr is predictably awesome, with Favreau and Cheadle both meshing well with him. Gwyneth Paltrow is quietly very good, Sam Rockwell wonderfully weaselly, Scarlett Johansson is a pretty damn cool Black Widow and Rourke looks particularly bad ass.

The dialogue is almost uniformly cool throughout with plenty of laugh out loud moments, and there's lots in there to to geek out over for those of us who are that way inclined.

On the downside, there is just WAY too much going on. Within about fifteen minutes we have Rourke introduced as the big-bad-to-be, Stark being harassed by the US senate (who want him to hand over the Iron Man tech) and the revelation that, oh, by the way, the Iron Man suit is not very slowly killing him.

As the movie progresses we throw in Hammer's jealousy of Stark, hints of the growing Avengers plot, a burgeoning romance between Paltrow and Downey Jr, Rhodes kinda sorta betraying Tony before emerging as his sidekick, Tony getting some sort of resolution with his dead dad and the introduction of Black Widow into the mix. Oh, and along the way a new element is discovered and then synthesised.

That's a lot. A shit-load in fact, and as a result a lot of things don't get the attention they deserve and you wind up caring less than you probably should about some of the characters, through no fault of the actors playing them. Vanko is a great bad ass, for example, but you don't really get to see much of the pain that (presumably) helped driving him down the road to naughtiness because he's on screen for a relatively short period of time. The romance between Tony and Pepper felt especially rushed to me, as does Rhodes rather sudden decision to don the suit to rein in Tony's crazy behaviour.

The action sequences, while visually impressive, also seem a bit hurried, with the final battle in particular a distinct anti-climax. Seriously, those are some fuggin' useless drones. A few men with guns would've achieved more death and destruction than those things, whose weapons seemed to consist of a flare gun that could only be fired at an angle 60 degrees up from horizontal. ED-209 might have been usurped by stairs, but at least he could point and shoot.

All that said, the good far outweighs the bad, but it blows my mind that nobody suggested trimming some of that plot before it made it to the big screen.

Its a comic book movie with a B level character with an A list cast. I don't understand with "Oh this is too much going on" nonsense. It was a bit complex for a comic book movie, but I had zero problem following it and it did have a nice pace to it. Hammer was a bit annoying near the end as well as how Whipleash got legs near the middle of the film. Other then that, probably the best way to start a rather lack luster summer.

I just saw Iron Man 2 today and I thought it was good but not great. I would agree with the general reviews that the movie was a bit scattered throughout but not as bad as some made it out to be.

Marvel is setting up for something bigger which is probably why Iron Man 2 was somewhat scattered.

Robert Downey Jr. is just simply awesome as Tony Stark / Iron Man and the supporting cast was definitely good and Don Cheadle did a good job as War Machine / Rhodes.

Overall, Iron Man 2 wasn't as good as the first one, but the movie was still pretty solid and worth seeing (and most times anyway, the sequel to any movie is not as good as the original).

Still, the next couple of years should be solid in terms of good comic book movies and Iron Man 2 has just paved the way for something bigger.

I know Cap's supposed to be the heart and soul of the Avengers, but they'd be insane not to center the 2012 "Avengers" marketing machine around Robert Downey Jr. He just blows everyone around him out of the water and his performance was just awesome.

I'm actually surprised at Favreau's extended screentime as Happy Hogan and he does well with the time he's given (er...that he's given himself). Scarlett Johansen made great eye candy and her big action scene was fun. And man, was Don Cheadle a major upgrade for this film. I loved him in a lot of those scenes and don't think they would have been as effective with Terrence Howard.

But if anyone is able to try and keep up with Downey, it's Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer. Rockwell played the sleazebag role to a tee and comes close to stealing the show before Downey just wows everyone again.

One aspect of the film I'm shocked (and pleasantly surprised) that they touched on was Stark's increasing alcoholism. Even if it was wrapped around the idea of Stark's deteriorating health, alcoholism is central to what makes Tony Stark such a flawed and compelling character. Even if they could never really fully go into "Demon in a Bottle" territory, it was rewarding for fanboys to see this aspect of the Stark character. And it really gets across the idea that there's nothing more dangerous than a drunk guy operating the heaviest of machinery.

Thumbs up! Not as mind-blowingly awesome as the original, but still very solid.

I think this might be why Fury wanted Stark just as a 'consultant' (i.e. Stark just does a cameo in the Avengers movie). Because, frankly, Downey would act Chris Evans and the no-name playing Thor off of the screen. The Cap shield's little appearance was pretty clever.

Short version: I thought Iron Man 2 was terrific overall. More unwieldy and overstuffed than its predecessor, but it was still great entertainment. I had an awesome time.

Jim Rhodes doesn't 'betray' Stark by taking the suit. He does it because it's painfully obvious that Tony, at the time, was mentally unstable and wasn't fit to handle being IronMan. His talk with Fury showed that he knew Rhodey did the right thing... under the circumstances.

I liked that they allowed Whiplash to not just be a lame guy with whips. They smartened him up and actually turned him into a threat, unlike in the comics.

Sam Rockwell does almost steal the movie. He's so good at everything he does. His jealously of Stark was so completely obvious before he even opens his mouth.

I think I liked this better then the first.

Combining the Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash into a single character was a smart move. Rourke also made him a believable and viable threat. In my mind, despite being the most outrageous looking, he was the most serious and realistic of all the characters.

I liked the movie a lot, but the one gaping plot hole in my mind is: how did Rhodes learn to control the suit so well and almost instantly? It took Stark several tries (as seen in the first film), but in this movie Rhodes is blasting off no problem with no hesitation or miscues.

His militairy training allows him to figure it out quickly? Plus he's Tony's best bud. Maybe he already got some tips out of him at random moments.

He then handed the suit over to the military and struck a deal with Hammer though, which is at least a little betrayal-ish.

It's not the complexity that's the issue, and I don't think anyone's suggesting there was too much going on for their tiny little mind to cope. The problem is that with so much going on, a lot of things that could've benefited from more time are rushed through very quickly.

I know they had to get from A to a very distant B, but by trying to cram in quite so much they weakened the movie a little overall. The whole wound up being less than the sum of the parts, as it were, albeit it's still a very enjoyable film.

With Tony Stark being a "consultant" for The Avengers, I honestly do not seeing it completely happen. Robert Downey Jr. has gone off the charts as his role as Tony Stark / Iron Man and I think the "consultant" gig will be temporary (but I do understand what some said that Robert Downey Jr. acting would perhaps be too much of the focus compared to the other actors who are known but not as big as Downey).

I did like the Capt. American shield part as all thought it was going to be something serious but it had another use which was to keep his machine level.

Right now though, I am chewing on Robert Downey Jr.'s potential limited role in The Avengers as just a consultant. I guess the future will tell what will definitely happen.

Saw it yesterday and loved it. Maybe not on the level of the first one, but part of my love of that movie was low expectations because I was never a fan of that character, other than in Avengers comics. Downey was just as good in this as the original, and I also enjoyed Cheadle, even if it will make for an odd double feature on DVD some lazy Sunday afternoon.

Just a great cast, great writing, and action/effects that do not overshaadow the plot, like say, Transformers. Overall, I would give it a B+.

Can't wait for Avengers, not to mention Thor and Cap!

When Hammer was revealing his drones at the Stark Expo and introducing them by military branch, I really wanted there to be some Coast Guard drones with little Tugboat hats giving a little "toot-toot!" double fist pump.

The hell with Comic-Con. I really, really, REALLY want to go to Stark Expo. (It goes for a YEAR?!)

I liked the film a lot. I didn't walk out of it saying "WOW!" like I did after the first film, but it was still really good. It just wasn't as well executed overall. A couple of plot and pacing issues dragged it down just a tad. But, as others have said, it wasn't dragged down to AWFUL, just down to great from flipping fantastic. And, more than likely, that was due to my high expectations.

To me, the bigger plothole was Vanko in disguise as a race mechanic, when Tony had just decided to race five minutes before.

After seeing it, I'm a little cheesed off that the trailers had shown the air-drop into Stark Expo and the suitcase armor. Both would have been massive "Holy Shit!" moments had they not been shown so often ahead of time. The suitcase reveal is especially egregious, considering the looooooooonnnng buildup to that moment in the finished film. The laser-slice weapon used near the end is a prime example of things being better off kept secret.

The performances and snappy dialogue were on the same level as the first (if not better in places), so that alone makes this a must-see.

Neither of those really bothered me; Rhodey did have to put together a 50+ page report on the armor for the Senate, so I just figured he had to figure out how to use it for that. And everyone knew Stark was going to be AT Monaco, just not racing in it. So that was just a happy coincidence for Vanko, who probably was just planning on smashing race cars until Iron Man showed up.

Pretty much agreed with the consensus that it was a fun movie, but that the first was better. My full review is here:

I loved this movie and everything about it ... makes me long for the summer of 2012 even more.

Speaking of Sam Rockwell & his fantastic job in the film, appearently (slashfilm.com) he was one of the actors that Favreau had in mind when casting Tony Stark/Iron Man

I'm in agreement with everyone else (good movie, not quite as good as the first), but the thing I really missed the most in this film was Tony the Inventor. The first movie had a lot of scenes of Tony building the armor, figuring out solutions for various problems. Things like testing the repulsors, or discovering that there's an icing problem when the suit flies too high. This movie just had the one bit at the end where he synthesizes the new element (and I'll eat my hat if it doesn't turn out to be vibranium), and I really could have used more.

And just to add my two cents, I figured the reason Stark's only a consultant for the Avengers is because that will keep the number of scenes of Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man armor to a minimum, which will help keep down costs. The film is going to cost a small fortune to make as it is.

I thought the Monaco Racing scene was extremely well-done and paced. I'd seen part of it in the trailer several times yet still got into into.

Whiplash was made to seem very menacing and destructive- even after they drove their car into him. I was on the edge of my seat like a kid, thinking "how is Tony going to stop him?"

There seemed to be something keeping it from being great and not good. Don't know.

Scarlett was hotter than hot. Rockwell rocked. Cheadle was an upgrade. Maybe the first film was such so surprisingly good it was hard to match up to that.
