The pilot episode was very good and last night's episode continued the funny. Joel McHale is a recent "find" for me, but he's very good and it's actually nice to see Chevy Chase back in a role that utilizes his leftover comedic talents. A worthy addition to what should be called NBC's "No Laugh Track Thursday."

I am very much enjoying the show so far. I have been a fan of The Soup for years, and Joel is great on Community without being over the top. I was rolling during the skit they put on last night for Spanish class.
There are a couple good supporting characters, especially Abed and last night with the introduction of the (inscrutable) Spanish teacher. Why not math? Why not martial arts?

I thought the pilot was very strong. There were a lot of good jokes and I liked the characters, especially Joel McHale, Britta, Abed, and Chevy Chase pretty much instantly. TV sitcom pilots always struggle with the burden of having to introduce the main characters and the main theme/concept of the series yet still has to be funny. Exposition is the enemy of comedy. I mean, The Office and 30 Rock's pilots weren't knock-you-off-your feet funny and look at where those shows went. Community started off really well last week, I thought.
This week was really good too. I liked the switching shirts sight gag and the slow motion montage of McHale and Chase's presentation with everyone's facial expressions worked for me. A lot of good stuff there. Some of the best stuff was Abed and Troy's teaming up, especially their Spanish rap over the closing credits.
It seems like a super-promising show. "What we have so far. Well, we have something incredibly long and very confusing and a little homophobic and really, really specifically, surprisingly and gratuitously critical of Israel. It's called 'Two Conquistadors,' it should probably be 'Dos'; I mean it is a Spanish class."? Remarkable.
I also thought that Parks & Recreation was their best episode by far, so they've really got the table set for when 30 Rock comes back.
I forgot to mention I thought it was brilliant to set the Joel and Chevy presentation to Aimee Mann's super depressing music from Magnolia.

Yes! Especially the hernia humor, those two scenes with Ron and the intern killed me. Might have been the funniest things the whole of Thursday night.
"It's a minor medical procedure." "AIDS?" "No." "What is it?" "It's a hernia." "Is it syphillis?" "I just said it's a hernia." "You can have two things."
Amazing. So was "Motion sensors." and "I was born ready. I'm Ron [BLEEEP!] Swanson."
Louis CK as the cop who likes Amy Pohler was great. "Parking while Indian." was killer. And so was the kiss on the cheek on Rashida Jones. "Now we both have herpes." I'm glad I stuck with Parks and Recreation. It's paying off.
SNL Thursday was good too. I figured they'd struggle without Sarah Palin skits like they had last year but the two that have aired so far have been funny.
In summary, it's clear NBC's Thursday comedy block completely owns my ass.
I thought the first ep of Community was fine, but last night's was really good. Likewise, I was close to giving up on Parks and Recreation, but again, last night's episode earned it another few weeks for me.
Originally posted by kentishParks & Rec I am still not buying into, even though I love me some Amy. But I can get that on the SNL specials.
Parks and Rec has taken a big step forward this season, and the B-plot between Ron and the intern last night was a nice surprise. But it's not coming near Office and 30 Rock territory, and probably never will.
Community has a way to go, too, but it's getting there...and yes, that tag was quite good.
The Spanish rap at the end is one of the most surprising and funny things I've seen on TV in quite some time. I rewound the DVR a couple of times just so we could laugh our asses off again and again.
Count me as another fan of Parks & Recreation. Aziz Ansari (the actor who plays Tom Haverford) is someone who I didn't know of before this show but I've seen him in a couple of movies now and he's absolutely hilarious everywhere I see him. I think he's NBC's biggest steal over the past couple of seasons.
Community is pretty good thus far. I dig all of the characters except Brita, who isn't bringing much to the table in the Generic Love Interest role. She's even being outshadowed in the looks department by Allison Brie, who I find to be just completely stunning.
Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.
Community has rocked my world; even the characters that I didn't like in week 1 (Abed especially) are all of a sudden hilarious.
Meanwhile, Parks & Rec still hasn't done it for me. I agree that the B plot (hernia) was really funny, but I'd like to see the A plot work for me some time too. Although Tom's bit on changing his name for political reasons had me rolling.
It is the policy of the documentary crew to remain true observers and not interfere with its subjects.
Chevy Chase is golden in this role. I don't think that any other actor could pull off the genuine excitement about planning a sausage-fest. Then followed by genuine disappointment with the sausage-fest coming to an end.
What I take from P&R so far is that everything is good but the lead. Aziz, Andy, and Ron Swanson, born ready, are A+ hilarious each time out, and Rashida Jones, Mirror Halpert, and April can bring it and have brought it. But the weakest part of the show for me has been Amy Poehler. I like AP a ton, but her female spin on Michael Scott at his silliest and least believable is not just too weirdly familiar but also just not good enough to keep up with everyone else being funny.
