Apparently Dante Culpepper was supposed to meet with Kansas City this week to discuss a workout/contract, but the former all-pro got a better offer.

When a has-been QB disses your for an 0-6 team, that can't make you feel like a million bucks.

That is probably as pathetic as can be. Looking at schedules, it is very possible the Lions go 0-16. The Bengals also have a solid shot, but the last game of the season against the Chiefs at home could prevent them from reaching the abyss. This is how bad it could be for the Bengals: If they go 1-15 by winning the last game of the season, they could end up with the #3 pick.

Honestly, I'm glad they didn't make the move. Culpepper isn't the QB of the future. He's not even as good as he used to be. Tyler Thigpen played a pretty good game last week, so I'm very, very cautiously optimistic about him. At least he'll have a whole half a season to show what he's got. And if he doesn't, they need to draft a QB of the future.

There's a team in Nashville that is wondering what the hell you're talking about. There's another one in New York scratching their collective heads too.

I'm amazed at how many garbage QBs there are out there. I can't figure out if it's a bunch of guys that just need to land in the right system to be servicable or the crop is really just that thin.

Because when you think Kerry Collins, you think elite. I guess the Giants will qualify though, yes.

So, one elite team and at least three really crappy ones.

We are used to Super Bowl teams having elite QBs lately (except the Giants) but a serviceable one who doesn't make mistakes works when their other pieces are pretty damn good. See the Ravens and Redskins.

Well, you know Kerry Collins is their current starter so I guess you must have watched SOME football this year. I'm guessing you haven't watched any of their games specifically though, otherwise you would have recalled Chris Johnson, Albert Haynesworth, Cortland Finnegan, Michael Griffin, etc. etc. etc. (oh yeah, and their 7-0 record) and realized your original point is wrong.

Instead of starting a thread, I'll just tack this on here. My (3-4) AFC standings don't jive with the NFL.com standings, but it looks like they just used the conference record as a straight tie-breaker because it's too early in the season for a full breakdown.

Playoff seeding after week 8

AFC
1. Tennessee (7-0) South Leaders
2. Pittsburgh (5-2) North Leaders (No head-to-head with NE, won with conference 1.000%)

3. New England (5-2) East Leaders (no head-to-head with Buf, won with division .500%, lost to Pit with conference .600%)
4. Denver (4-3) West Leaders
5. Buffalo (5-2) lost to NE with division .000%
6. Baltimore (4-3) beat NY Jets with division .571%

7. NY Jets (4-3)
8. Miami (3-4) tied Cle in Conference .500%, beat Jax in conference, not enough common games, won with SoV .591%
9. Cleveland (3-4) beat Jax
10. Jacksonville (3-4) beat Hou & Ind; lost to Miami & Cle in conference .429%, lost to Cle
11. Indianapolis (3-4) lost to Jax, beat Hou

12. Houston (3-4) lost to Jax & Ind
13. San Diego (3-5)

3. Arizona (4-3) West leaders (tied with Chicago in conference .500%, not enough common games, won on SoV .500%)
4. Chicago (4-3) North leaders (no head-to-head with GB, tied on division 1.000%, tied on conference .500%, tied in common games .600%, won on strength of victory .357%)

Right, I forgot a 7-0 start makes you an elite team. Sure did work for the Chiefs a few years ago. Come talk to me in February if the Titans are still around (and I hope they are).

Seven-and-oh, or not, Kerry Collins has started the same number of Super Bowls as Peyton Manning, so I think he's proven that he can at least not screw it up enough to get the team where it needs to go.

Kerry Collins has done a solid job of leading the Titans, and not to take anything away from him, but it helps when you have an O-Line that has not allowed a sack in 5 1/2 games.

I don't understand why the Lions don't at least let Drew Stanton play. Wasn't he a 2nd rounder?

Course Brad Johnson can go SB ring-for-SB-ring with Peyton too, and he looks plenty capable of screwing stuff up, for which we all should offer humble gratitude.

Seriously though, one consequence of the Pats going 16-0 is it seems to have given people mighty short memories. For the most part 'elite' teams will still lose the odd dumb game, which is all we've seen so far this year.

The year the Colts won the Superbowl they lost four games, only one of which was to a team over .500 (the 9-7 Cowboys).

In 2004 the Patriots were 'elite' but still found a way to lose to the Miami Dolphins, who mostly weren't.

There's a bunch of teams right now (Skins, Cowboys, Steelers......I'll avoid saying the Eagles) who, come the end of the season we'll likely look back on and realise "hey, they're pretty damn good", even if the odd blemish on their record doesn't make them look that way just now.

There's only two teams in the NFL with 1 loss or less, and I guarantee you there's more teams people consider to be "crappy" than "elite" this year, which for some reason everyone seems to be ignoring and that was my main point to begin with. You'd think with the Lions, Chiefs, and Bengals around there'd be more than the Giants and Titans with 1 loss or less. Laws of averages out the window, lots of parity in the middle. Same thing seems to be happening in college football in reverse right now.

The point I was trying to make was history shows you can have a few dumb losses along the way and still be considered 'elite' come the end of the year.

Personally I think half the reason you don't have that many stand out records so far is down to many of the top teams being concentrated in a couple of divisions (NFC East & South) along with a combination of injuries and a couple wacky results. Heck the NFC East is 17-5 outwith the division in spite of Philly and (especially) Dallas suffering with a bunch of mostly short-term injuries.

Time will tell I guess, but come the end of the year I reckon the records of the top teams will be pretty comparable to those of previous years and we'll look back on the nutty results we've had so far as being no more than that. One man's opinion is all.

Because it's the Lions. Anyone who doesn't live in SE Michigan or has been a Lions fan from birth doesn't understand, the Lions don't operate rationally. Case in point, trading down to take Stanton in the FIRST PLACE when just keeping the pick had Paul Posluszny, Lamarr Woodley, and David Harris right there.

So, the Lions pass up on three defensive studs that could've saved Ernie Sims from drowning in the below-mediocrity of Paris Lenin's "leadership" for a young QB. Ok, obviously at least this young QB is going to a future starter once the Kitna band-aid falls off. Nope! Why? They're the Lions!

Looks like they found something they liked. Whatever it was, the Lions signed Culpepper to a two-year deal today.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3676865

At the end of the article: 'Culpepper, a former Vikings starter, has great knowledge of the NFC North.'

Great knowledge? Sounds like a line his agent may have used. He last played in the NFC North in 2005 and that was only seven games.

Most of the teams in the NFC North were in the old Central division or whatever it was called before that, right?

It's the same teams minus the Bucs as the old Central Division.
