I'm currently having a blast making my way through hours of WCW videos from 97 & 98. I've just finished watching Havoc '97 which ended with a 'fan' scaling the cage at the end of the main event and then getting beaten up...

Sorry that this discussion is about ten years old, but does anyone know the story behind this? It seems pretty obvious it was just an angle, but it seems like a very bizarre one (what was it trying to achieve?).

On a side note, anyone who hasn't seen Halloween Havoc 97 should catch it for its remarkable Mask vs Title match between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Misterio jr.. Sheer class.

I'm pretty sure it was an actual fan.

That Eddy/Rey match is by far my favorite WCW match ever. I haevm't seen a ton admittedly, but that springboard DDT off the top rope blows me away every time.

As cryptic as WCW could be with their angles (to the point Schiavone couldn't connect the dots) - this was not an angle. This was just one of MANY fans in 97-99 WCW that hit the ring.

Yeah, I remember watching that. If you see the way everyone reacted to the fan climbing the cage, you can tell that wasn't a planted fan.

Apparently it was the popular thing to do when going to WCW at the time. Jump the guard rail and see if you can get five seconds of fame before being beaten by your favorite wrestler or the guy you were headed after.

Was this Halloween Havoc from a released tape or was it recorded off a PPV? Would WCW actually not edit out a fan climbing the cage before releasing something like this? That would be odd...I could only assume the fan would be one huge blur if it was a WWF release from that same era, heh.

Also, when I think of fans entering the ring I'm always reminded of "crazy Edmonton fan" from 2002 who entered the ring during the RVD/Eddie ladder match. I seem to recall the fan sporting an Oilers jersey and did he even push over the ladder or am I remembering wrong? I know Eddie and security got some good punches on on him though.

i will take a shot and say they probably didn't edit that footage. I have PPV's from 98-99 on commercial video and those were fairly untouched. WWE would probably just cut out that part of the action, much like they did for WM this year and the fan before the Michaels/Cena match. That always seems kind of awkward to me now...

It's just a copied DVD but I'm assuming it's from the VHS version as the advert for the following PPV has the following on-screen text: 'Check your local video store' (rather than a time, date, phone number etc.)

I know that there has been legit 'ringcrashers' but the following factors made me think this was an angle:

1) The fan got a lot of camera time scaling that cage
2) He seemed pretty confident and quick climbing it
3) He received very 'worked-looking' stomps for his troubles

From what everyone has said on here though, it makes sense that this was yet another legitimate moron invading the ring. What on earth did they want to achieve?

I was just thinking we were on kind of a dry streak of wrestlers dying depressingly young.
