For the 2nd biggest PPV of the year, this was a pretty mediocre show. Good in several portions, but terrible in others! All in all, it adds up to mediocrity.

-Kane d. Finlay with the chokeslam. Fun opener. Finlay works on the ribs throughout the match. He tries to finish Kane off with his finisher (the shillelagh shot), but gets a two-count. Finlay finds nobody in particular during a corner charge and Kane chokeslams him for the win.
-The GM's have their own room! Santino tries to claim Vince is his papa, but Regal hastily removes him. MVP then takes umbrage to not being booked on the show, so Vince grants him his request of a non-wrestling contest with Matt Hardy for tonight. Huh...
-Umaga d. Kennedy & Carlito with the Samoan Spike. Pretty much a handicap match against Umaga until the end when Kennedy turns on Carlito. But Umaga picks himself right up and spikes Kennedy to retain.
-Rey Mysterio d. Chavo Guerrero. What the bloody hell is Rey wearing? Chavo works the knee throughout the match, but can't put Rey away. Rey comes back with the 619 and springboard splash for the win. But yikes, that silver look has GOT to go!
-King Booker hypes his match with Triple H. A Triple H win would be a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, sez he! Man, I know he's SO losing tonight, but I really hope this is just the beginning for a Booker main event push, because he sure as hell deserves one for his work on this feud.
-Beth Phoenix wins the Divas battle royal. Order of elimination was Brooke, Maria, Layla, Victoria, Kristal (in a horrible-looking spot), Kelly, Jillian, Mickie, Melina, Torrie, and Michelle. Beth should hopefully unseat Candice, just to bring some freshness to the Women's Division.
-MVP comes out with a cooler full of beer. He wants Matt Hardy in a beer-drinking contest and, at this point, even the blind kid in the bleachers can see where this is going. Matt Hardy comes out and points out that MVP appointed a substitute for his boxing match, so he should get a sub for the beer-drinking contest. This, of course, cues Steve Austin. Stone Cold chugs beer with MVP and proceeds to give him a Stunner. A waste of a PPV segment, but I still can't help but be oddly entertained by MVP and Matt Hardy's bizarre ongoing game of one-upsmanship.
-Cryme Tyme joins the GM's and say either one of them can be Vince's bastard. They dance for some reason. Coach and Teddy Long also dance. JTG puts his hat on Regal. REGAL DANCES! Ron Simmons looks at the dancing Regal and says "Damn!" Also a waste of a PPV segment, but this was the BEST WASTED PPV SEGMENT EVER!
-John Morrison d. CM Punk with the old Ric Flair pin. And that should do it for CM Punk's career. Going 0 for 3 on PPV title matches, feel free to slap that "choker" label on him. Oh, and in case you might have thought these two started to gel by now, they didn't. The match blew and Morrison could barely get his feet up on the ropes for the pin spot. Just terrible.
-Triple H d. King Booker with the Pedigree. Whereas last year he was Conan, this year Triple H is the Six Million Dollar Man, as the video package says he's bigger, stronger, and faster! Insert steroids joke. But all that aside, these two have a good match that goes back-and-forth. Booker hits his big spots, but it ends as we all knew it would.
-Batista d. Great Khali by DQ. Not only a bad match, but an incredibly shitty finish to boot. Fans turned on the match towards the middle. Batista tried hard, but it takes a miracle worker to carry Khali to a watchable match (and what does THAT say about John Cena?). Khali hits Batista with a chair for the DQ. After the bell, Batista repeatedly hits Khali with the chair, but the fans are LONG gone at that point. This crap nearly lasted TEN MINUTES! The Great Khali's reign of terrible continues!
-Joining Vince and Coach now are Moolah and Mae Young and, oh hell, I paid $40 for THIS?!
-Ok, at this point, those title matches have this PPV practically in the toilet. The only thing worse would be if Randy Orton wins the title.
-John Cena d. Randy Orton with the FU. Once again, John Cena has saved another PPV with a dynamite main event. Great match to narrowly take Match of the Night honors from Triple H and Booker. Orton escaped the STFU and Cena kicked out of the RKO. Fans were split on both guys throughout. Still, a great main event, especially compared to the other two title matches.

I wouldn't go out of my way to catch this one, but the big returns (Rey and HHH) delivered and the main event was good. Is that good enough to offset the horrible Punk/Morrison and Khali/Batista matches? Eh, call it a push. Thumbs in the middle.

Geeze, if there was ever a time to pull the trigger on Punk's title win, it was now. So they either do Punk/Morrison AGAIN or else, what, Morrison/Dreamer?

Yep, pretty mediocre.

Some points:

-Good to see Cena finally beat the odds. But I thought the crowd was clearly behind Orton. But my surround wasn't on.
-Rey looked a little chubbier than when we last saw him but HHH looked a little slimmer. Yeah, the silver surfer gig doesn't look good at all. Stick with the Flash. And don't let it get in your lungs, Rey, like the Scarecrow!
-No announcement on Vince's bastard son? Huh!?
-We were tease with Kane/Hornswaggle. That would have been the BIGGEST chokeslam ever!
-Regal dancing was great ... just great.
-I liked how Austin stunned MVP right out of his bling.

The crowd made that main event something special. Orton, even with the chinlocks everywhere, looked really good. This match made him look like more of a championship contender than the entire build of the ppv. And the crowd was anti-Cena like Toronto was anti-Rock at wrestlemania X-8. At this point they may as well keep the belt on Cena until Wrestlemania, but push him more and more as a heel on the way. Whoever goes over the fans should be rabid for it. I guess doing it at a ppv other than Mania could bring in a nice buyrate, but I'd rather wait until then. Great main event for Summerslam though.

A great main event that was soured by Kahli, Morrison, and Carlito. Morrison and Punk was just boring. Carlito, I just don't like the way he sells. It looked awful when he was whipped into the corner by Umaga early in the match. He backed in so weakly and then flopped down like he had been stabbed. And not much needs to be explained about Kahli.

Anyway, good ppv. Nice returns for Rey and HHH, nice surprise from Austin, good comedy from Regal, a good opening match, and a great main event. Undertaker and Rey coming back to Smackdown should help their main event picture and make these cards that much better. ****

No surprises at all. Some ok matches, but for a PPV Event....totally uneventful. The Regal dance segment was incredibly funny, and Mae West attacking Vince was something to guffaw at. The fans were great for the final match, and also for the Battista/Khali bout. There was a VERY loud boring chant, as the announcer mentions, "The fans voicing their displeasure..." No titles changed, no run-ins, turns, surprises, or advanced angles.

It is nice to have generous friends, who host get-togethers and foot the bill, so I shouldn't complain (but I did anyway, obviously).

This may have been my worst outing as a PPV predictor ever. Aside from the two returnee matches, which my 16-month-old daughter could have picked, I was wrong on everything. (Well, I was right about Batista winning by DQ, but wrong about how it happened.) And yeah, I would've picked Finlay over Kane too.

The whole PPV felt like an exercise in treading water. No titles changing hands, no plot developments other than Beth becoming the #1 contender, and nothing definitively blown off beyond Booker/Triple H.

First two matches were lots of fun, Rey/Chavo was good, but from the battle royal on there wasn't much to remember. Orton/Cena seemed like it was building to a really hot ending, but the last 2 minutes seemed flatter than they should have been. I've already forgotten HHH/Booker, and the less said about Khali the better.

Ow! My ass! After what Vince McMahon and WWE did to it tonight, I don't know when I'll be able to sit down again.

I thought Summerslam looked bad on paper, but holy shit, I never could have imagined how much worse watching it live would be like. There was nothing redeemable about that show. The only people who could possibly found something to like about that show spent the weekend shopping for Trapper Keepers and #2 pencils for the first day of school. They're the only ones who got their parents' money's worth. Or their babysitting money's worth. And I suppose John Morrison's mom is happy.

I'm reeling from the contempt they showed the rest of the audience over 14. All three World Title matches were abysmal. The ECW Title match was booked to be shorter than a comparible Women's Title match on other pay per views. The leaner, meaner Triple H and the fatter, silver Rey Mysterio didn't exactly wow anyone with their comebacks. But the Batista vs. Khali match -- holy shit, man. Holy shit.

That was the kind of show that kills a town. Hell, in the old days, that show would have killed a territory.

And I'm live at RAW in Boston tomorrow night. Ooh, I can't wait. I'd rather watch the fucking dog show at this point.

Probably the worst SummerSlam of the decade. Best match was Cena/Orton at ***1/2, but my expectations for it were a little higher . Rey/Chavo was good but just the latter day three star ho-hum Rey/Chavo match. REY IS FAT. REY IS GREY. At least the skits and Hunter's abs were awesome. And at least none of the women died.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

They've got one last chance with Morrison & Punk, as I don't think the two of them have faced off in an Extreme Rules match yet. And if they blow that one, ECW will be the walking dead. If they actually think that Morrison is the future of ECW they're sorely mistaken.

Other than that particular abortion, I was mostly pleased with the show, particularly that they chose reason over insanity and kept the belt on Cena.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Why? It's almost a lock that the challenger for Wrestlemania will be HHH, and as Wrestlemania 22 proved the crowd will go nuts for Cena vs. HHH regardless of which, if either, of them is the officially designated heel.

Cena doesn't have to "turn heel". He's already a heel for the only fans who want him to be. All WWE has to do is feed him opponents and count their money.

I had to work this evening...looks as if I didn't miss much of a card when usually SummerSlam is fairly good show to catch. Very, slightly, surprised Cena won considering they were trying, after repeated attempts, to bring Orton up as the next blue chipper, golden boy, and company carrier. At this point in time that doesn't seem to be the case.

"... as a result of that vicious shilelagh attack..." Chortle. Kane / FInley was good! I liked the story they told, I liked the execution. Just a dash of Hornswoggle, but not so much as to make the whole thing dumb. Very nice opener!

Uhhh, Vince? What is "aquatic, infectuous womb" supposed to mean?

Not much to say about Kennedy/Carlito/Umaga. Kennedy was trying. Umaga was trying, given the skills & character he has to work with. Carlito was there. Many missed opportunities. Where is this going? Eh.

Whose clever idea was the paint? Was it *supposed* to be all gone by the end of the match? (Some sort of metaphor, perhaps? Naaaah.) I liked the lucha parts. I got really bored really fast with "working the knee". Worse than that was the way that Rey's knee seemed to get better during the course of the match. (I'm tellin' ya -- that paint was just strength-sapping.) Good to see Rey on principle, & glad he seems healthy, but I wasn't really into the second two-thirds of the match.

Diva Battle Royal was a mess, but glad Beth won.

Yeah, as soon as MVP said the word "beer", there was no doubt where this was going. Wouldn't it have been better if Austin hadn't just been on free TV? Y'mighta been able to fit a WGTT vs Kendrick/London in this slot.

CrimeTime in GM room was stupid until the very instant that Regal got into the groooove. I love William Regal. (And good use of Ron Simmons.)

I didn't hate Morrison/Punk as others here did. I see Morrison as "high potential" for the future. Isn't Punk supposed to be experienced enough to contribute a little more to their programme? Not great, but fine.

HHH looks gooood!! Glad to see him back; he looks very healthy; & we love it when he looks happy! Yum.

Batista did the best he could with Khali, & it wasn't too terribly long. Doesn't everybody know that you start with a pinkie finger to peel off a grab? And even though Batista isn't a "cerebral assassin", he should still know that he needs some sort of a gameplan against Khali. Perhaps that's the plan for later in their programme. (Personally, I was hoping the programme might be over early.)

Orton vs. Cena was good! Cena continues to improve, & Randy has been looking much better in the ramp-up to this. They "feel" like they ought to be well matched, & they both did extremely well. Cena deserves to be the champ just because he rolls so very comfortably with "You love me, you hate me -- either one's OK." Very entertaining match & a good, solid SummerSlam ME!

Jesus. It was a mediocre show, but this is some serious butthurt.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Not quite a screencap, but still photos from WWE.com:

Here's Rey's springy entrance. Yep, it's Silver Surfer time.

But as you can see, it peeled/wore off quickly as the match went on. Shades of Warrior's old facepaint.

I thought he called it "necrotic" but I could be wrong.

I didn't get my money's worth from this PPV. I would have spent $10 for the Regal dance, $5 for the main event, and $3 for the Austin segment. So I guess since I split the cost of it maybe I did get my money's worth. Still feels like a bad purchase though.

I didn't miss HHH. Last night reminded me of that fact.

Cena isn't dropping the belt until WM24. When HHH comes back for his return job. Figure they can do another month or two with Orton, then a month or two with Kennedy or Carlito or whomever, and then lead up to WM.
