I wish he had postponed his announcement until closer to his actual exit, then maybe he'd still be on. But maybe he did it that way on purpose so he could announce his leaving before all the news & rumors about his next venture got out? Either way, there is a huge hole in my day without his show on
There are only 2 sports stations in L.A. The "other" station in town is a Fox Sports Radio affiliate, but they play Jim "I'm gonna pause right here for no good reason" Rome's syndicated show in DP's time slot.
I would assume most sports stations put their big draw guy in that same slot, so where does that leave Dan?????
I listened today and the total void left is palpable.
It's not fair to throw Van Pelt under bus yet as he probably didn't have much warning and time to prepare. Plus, it's damn near the SLOWEST sports time of the year, so what's there to talk about? If Van Pelt does his David Beckham impression one more time, I think I will scream. I am going to have to switch to the Czaban repeat on XM from noon to three Eastern. Listening to that twice in one day will be better than Van Pelt once.
CRZ had to edit my profile and close my table for me. I am a bad man.
Originally posted by Me four days agoThey could try and go with another ESPN personality with DP-level name value. And that would likely mean someone like Stephen A. Smith. Of course, needless to say, that'd be a nightmare scenario because I don't think a national audience can handle him for three hours a day. Hell, I can't even handle him on a five-minute Sportscenter segment.
I take it all back. I'll gladly take Stephen A. Smith. Giving him a nationwide audience Monday through Friday sounds great! Five days of Stephen A. sounds FANTASTIC! I won't get sick of him screaming into the mic. Really I won't. Just PLEASE don't let Scott Van Pelt near the radio microphone again.
I gave the man a chance, but the repeatedly unfunny Beckham impressions was just a total show-killer.

The Wisdom of Homsar: DaAaAa, these Easter pants are gettin' way too tight!
Michael Kay - voice of the Yankees. If he got the gig, and even if it never occurred, you'd hear tons of 'east coast bias' just because he's employed by the Yankees (among other places).
I think they'd have to use the voice overs where Dan was hired to run the spot (i.e., Cousin's Subs) until they are re-done. I'm not sure about the video game, unless he's still under contract, just not on the air. Whatever you can do to drive viewers to the website.
The lastest gossip is Dan will return for the scheduled Best of DP week that was scheduled to be the end of his run, but that'll be it.

I'm sure getting Dan's voice in the commercials, and associated with the video game (and it's motor oil sponsor), is in the contract for those ads and why they're paying whatever money they are paying. DP surely gets a cut. Those deals will all have to be renegotiated, and people may be unwilling to cut a new deal until they find out who's the new host (and how affiliates will react - in Chicago, it sounds pretty definite that local ESPN will be dropping the last hour, regardless.)
what's funny is that if you go to the espn radio section of espn.com, all of the DP Show branding is still there. They certainly have had time by now to get rid of them if they really want to do so.
I'm glad I didn't even try listening today, as Michael Kay is a Yankees shill (is he still a Yes Employee?) and is pretty much unlistenable.

He covered Gary Sheffield's comments from over the weekend that Joe Torre is a racist today. Not that I agree with Sheff, but I thought Michael Kay was pretty biased & shilly in his defense of Torre & the Yankees.

His mug is no longer on the top of the ESPN Radio web page.
Who is screaming out of my radio right now? Thank goodness I've got baseball to listen to in a little under an hour!
EDIT - I'm not sure how I didn't recognize the dulcet tones of Screamin' A. Smith. [/sarcasm]
The radio insider section still lists his show as the dan patrick show, complete with picture and logo.
I'm glad I didn't bother to tune in today, if SAS was on.
edit...
from today's sports media watch blog (from sports biz daily)
Dan Patrick: Will be off his radio show until his final week on the air.
Quoting Patrick: "This gives ESPN an opportunity to shake the trees and audition people, and I wanted to be fair to the audience, and my employers, because I didn’t want to have guests keep coming on and asking about my leaving."
Michael Kay announced yesterday (Tue 14th) that "Dan Patrick will be back tomorrow (today Wed 15th)", then listed off some of his scheduled guests (David Stern, Reggie Miller, and some others I forget). THEN Michael Kay and his co-host whose name I forget proceeded to say their thank yous and goodbyes as if they wouldnt be back on air again. HMMMMM...
But here's the thing: This week was originally supposed to be DP's farewell week before he disappeared off the air a few weeks ago. And when Michael said DP would be on today (Wed 15th), he made it sound more like DP would be *BACK*, like for good. He didnt actually SAY that, but the way he worded it sure made it sound that way.
Either way, today's show should be pretty darn interesting.
During one of last week's shows (when this thread had already closed - thanks for the re-opening), Tirico and Van Pelt said that DP would be back for this Friday's show. I've got a conference call that will run for most of th show, so please keep me posted.

That's what I heard, too, Paul. I will be switching it on in five minutes to see what's going on! Gotta make sure Cowherd's done before I switch over, though he has been growing on me a little bit. A little, Frosty.

It sounds clear from his open that he is back for three days and three days only, to give the proper farewell.

Thanks, Greg. I can surf the internet during a call, just not listen to the radio!
It turns out that my local ESPN station has decided to pre-empt today's show with the debut of a brand new local show in DP's time slot. I dont know why they didnt do this months ago, but they should've pre-empted Cowherd's crap show instead. I havent listened to him in months btw and I dont think I've missed a thing.
Luckily for me, I remembered that you can listen to the national feed at www.espnradio.com. I missed everything that happened before Billy Crystal came on, and I missed everything in between him & David Stern. Didnt seem like Stern had anything of importance to say, but he sounds like a guy they need to place on suicide watch soon.
