We’re back with another week of Idol. Last week, Sanjaya stayed, Gina went, and well that’s pretty much it. This week, J-Lo is the guest of the week, and that means…..Latin night!!! Woo. Who will be the next do go, leaving us with the Top Seven?

Melinda starts us out tonight by singing “Sway.” I dunno. Definitely wasn’t her best performance, and the step outside of her comfort zone wasn’t a good one. She should still be sticking around for sometime to come, and can’t let this bad week affect her too badly.

LaKisha is up next, singing “Conga” by Gloria Estefan. She does a great job this week, and actually outsings Melinda, for the first time in weeks. She also has to step out of her comfort zone, but does a little better job than Melinda. Randy loves it, and Paula and Simon really didn’t. Always nice to see Paula take the first grab at a negative comment.

Chris is singing Santana & Rob Thomas’ “Smooth.” I am a very big Rob Thomas guy, and love Matchbox Twenty. This was extremely hard to listen to. Just painful. But the judges loved it. Go figure.

Haley is cleaning up tonight singing “Turn the Beat Around” by Gloria Estefan. She’s sexed it up tonight even more than the past couple weeks, and probably a good reason. She didn’t sing the song very well, and after last week’s effort, she may very well be the next one to fall victim to Sanjaya-mania. Simon blasts her singing and just basically tells her, you’re only in now because of your sex appeal, nothing more.

Fifth up is Phil. He’s going to be singing “Maria, Maria” by Santana w/ someone I don’t remember. He sings the song very well, and doesn’t sound nearly as bad as last week. Still kinda plain and doesn’t really stand out for me, but definitely better.

Sixth tonight is Jordin. She is going to be singing “The Rhythm is Gonna Get You.” She just continues to grow on me every week I see her, and this week is no different. A subpar night across the board it looks like, but she’s the best of the bunch thus far. I hope she’s in the competition for a very long time.

Lucky number seven tonight is Blake, who’s going to sing Marc Anthony’s “I Need to Know.” He’s does a great job tonight, especially considered to the rest of the group. He just looks like he’s ready to go drop a CD. Maybe not the best vocal, but the best performance of the night. Judges agrees unanimously. Looks like he wins this week.

Closing up tonight is Sanjaya. He’s singing some Spanish song, that I didn’t quite catch the title to. He actually really impressed me this week. Stepped way out of the box, sang the song well, actually sang a song in Spanish, and got positive comments from all of the judges. Hell has officially just frozen over.

Well, this is how I have them…

Blake
Jordin
Sanjaya
LaKisha
Melinda
Phil
Chris
Haley

I think Phil, Chris, and Haley will be the residents of the bottom three, and unless a massive male vote happens tonight, Haley’s legs have made their last appearance on a Tuesday. That makes me sad inside.

See ya next week.

Melinda - Eh. Great singer but I didn't think it was even close to a step outside her comfort zone. It was same old Melinda which is good, but getting boring.

Lakisha - Oh dear lord, this was almost unwatchable. First, that dress and that lipstick ruined any chance of me having a second child. Then the editors continue to make fun of her by showing her being instructed and yet again not listening(or not being capable of the correct pronunciation). Horrible dancing, only slightly better singing than her Diamonds are Forever disaster. She's bottom three this week.

Chris - Wife and I thought it was pretty terrible so I'm not sure what the judges were watching.

Haley - We like it when you slut it up in the overly flirty girl next door kinda way. Not the ho on the corner thing you had workin tonight. Plus the performance sucked. Bottom three.

Phil - I....no I can't do it. I won't say it. Phil
.
..
...
was ok.

Jordin - She's just too damn cute, but she seemed nervous or something and it took away from this a bit. I thought she should have gone for a big Selena ballad, but oh well. She was fine tonight.

Blake - Finally the night is saved by a killer performance.

Sanjaya - Yeah, yeah he wasn't half bad. Watch, NOW he'll get voted off. Nah, he'll get bonus points. If you're going to continue to stick around please make your sister wear the bouncy shirt again.

I'm thinking it's a very safe bet to take Haley, Lakisha and Phil in the bottom three. I say Phil over Chris because you can tell people don't even care enough to boo Simon for ripping Phil. He doesn't have that teeny girl vote that Chris does.

We'll say Haley goes home, but don't be a bit suprised if we have out "shocking" elimination and say goodbye to Lakisha.

This is the first season I have really watched regularly, so I am unsure of something. Do they always have lots of shitty guest "mentors" who have no business telling someone how to sing, or is that new? Because when I think people who can teach you something about singing, Gwen Stefani and J.Lo don't quite come to mind.

Melinda- Eh, she'll get by this week, but it was a bland performance. The song demands a sultry vibe that she can't quite pull off. Not bad, not good, just sort of there. Probably good though for her to get a bit of a knocking from the judges, as there seemed to be some backlash brewing as people got tired of the constant praise and "aw shucks, you really like me?" demeanor.

Lakisha- Not impressed at all. I think she'll survive another week or two, but at this point she seems destined to fall out somewhere before the Final Four. And the lipstick really was a bad choice. She has such a dark skin tone that it made her lips look almost comic to me. And for all her big voice skills, she really seems to have trouble with songs that she is not VERY comfortable with.

Chris- I don't get it, but the judges and fans sure seem to like him. I'm beginning to think he may be one of the Final Two. He strikes me as the one who will eventually win out over Blake in the Battle of the Boy Band Rejects. He's marginally better than Blake.

Haley- I enjoyed her performance, but probably not for any of the right reasons. She's going to be Bottom Two this week, and if she hangs on its only for one more week because...

Phil- I like Phil. He's probably the only person on this show I could imagine ever wanting to go hear sing. But between looking like Bat Boy and having such a somber air to everything he sings, he's not likely to survive much more. He or Haley are going home tomorrow.

Jordin- She dresses too old for her age. Embrace the youthfulness. Sing and act like the teenager you are. Don't come out dressed like a middle manager out for lunch at Applebee's on Casual Friday and sing a bad 80's song. I mean, I know they have limitations on what they can choose, but surely something more modern could have been picked. Because of all that I was underwhelmed. Haley had much more energy and charisma than she did tonight. She'll survive, though I suspect she will be in the Bottom Three.

Blake- If the voting were for who you want to leave, I would call Blake's number many times. Maybe it's because I don't much care for the source material, but I found his performance to be decent at best. He'll survive safely for another few weeks, but I can't see him winning out.

Sanjaya- Swear to God this is a true story. As the show opened I told the GF that I envisioned Sanjaya showing he had been playing possum the whole time and busting out a killer rendition of "Besame Mucho." When they said that was what he was going to do I LOL'ed. When he did a decent job of it I ROFL'ed. Had the judges called it best song of the night I might have LMAO'ed. Either way he's safe.

In order of best to worst performance tonight I would say:
Chris
Blake
Melinda
Jordin
Phil
Sanjaya
Haley
Lakisha

I still say the next few weeks we see first Haley and Phil go, then Jordin and Lakisha go. Only then do I think we all have to leave the ride known as the Sanjaya Universe. So right now I would say the final three end up being Blake and Chris and Melinda. though

Honestly if I were Melinda I'd watch out. I didn't think this performance was good and even though she's been the best overall people seem to only vote on that week so one performance could doom you. I don't think she was worse than Phil or Haley, but a bad performance plus people not voting because they think she is safe and she could be in trouble. Really the only one I'd think is safe this week is Blake.

JLO as guest mentor and the results show tonight gets pushed to 60 minutes long - think she has an album about to drop ?

Melinda's stylist finally doesn't get fired this week but the singing just wasn't there. Let's see how many fans she really has this week.

Lakisha once again threatens to unleash the big guns with her movement around stage and it least we were spared the kissyface bedroom eyes shot at the end. You need to be SHARP with the lyrics to make the song pop. She could be in trouble. Royalty check # 1 for Gloria Estefan.

Chris - an octave too high - I expect to see my little dunkettes watching a performance like this between showings of "That's So Raven" on Disney.

Haley showed enough leg but the consensus in our office was that she needed to show at least a boob & a half to get by. Not sharp on her lyrics either. Royalty Check # 2 for Gloria Estefan.

Batboy - the hat looked stupid but no worse than your creepy dome & pointed ears. His vice is thin and he has no passion. Again he throws out a family reference after the comments looking for the sentimental vote.

Jordin - didn't love it - didn't hate it. Rotalty Check # 3 for Gloria Estefan.

Blake - were you & Phil having a stupid hat contest. Even your friend in the audience have ugly headgear on. Best of a bad night.

Sanjaya - I was right that he got his haircut last week. They pasted some of the clippings a single strand at a time to his chin. Saw a woman on the train with the same hairstyle and it looked a lot better on her. Ryan called it, Sanjaya knows where the camera is at all times. I think he sang in spanish but his voice was too thin to be heard.

Bottom 3 should be Haley, Phil & Chris but Lakisha or Melinda will take Chris' place which will be a huge AT&T wake up call next week for their fans but Phil will be going home. Haley survives a bottom 2 again.

I liked J-Lo as the guest mentor this week. She seemed genuinely concerned with helping the kids succeed rather than just predicted how good or crappy their performance is gonna be.

Melinda - You know Simon was just gonna find one week to rip Melinda just so he could say she wasn't perfect. I thought she was fantastic, as usual.

Lakisha - FINALLY, she ventures out of her comfort zone and I thought she did well on "Conga", but I still thought Melinda was better.

Chris - Seriously, I give up with this kid. I thought he completely butchered "Smooth", but Randy was all "You rocked it/That was hawt, dawg/We got a live one tonight" Whatever.

Haley - Even nice legs can look bad on HDTV. Oh yeah, didn't care much for the performance, either.

Phil - Same story, different week. I liked his singing, but he looked like he was already on the way out. Shame, actually.

Jordin - I like how "Latin music" includes remakes of disco songs. Such a difficult song to do. I don't think many other singers than Gloria Estefan could do that live without having to catch their breath mid-song. She did OK.

Blake - Fabulous. One of the best performances of the season IMO. I think he's a dark horse to win the whole shebang.

Sanjaya - Well, he's good at songs where you silently sing in Spanish. Maybe he can stretch next week and sing Beck's "Loser".

My top 2: Blake and Melinda
My bottom 2: Chris and Haley

Expected top 2: Melinda and Lakisha
Expected bottom 2: Phil and Haley (Phil goes buh-bye)

It is apparent that I haven't lost my hearing. You all agreed that Chris was awful, as did my wife and I. How did all three judges concur that he was good?

Overall, I thought it was a pitiful night for singing. Just bad.

I think Jordin, Sanjaya, Blake, Melinda and LaKisha are safe for this week. Chris, Haley and Phil are in trouble and I see Phil heading for home, because I can't figure out who is voting for him. It's not the teeny-boppers, it's not the chicks. Maybe it's the Nosferatu crowd.

I say see ya, Phil.

If by "shitty mentors" you mean people who have proven major success on the pop charts and in the pop music business, then yeah, they're always this shitty. American Idol is not a singing competition.

Besides, would you really want to hear Haley doing Crucify or Phil doing Silent All These Years on Tori Amos week? You'd run screaming with the rest of us.

I think this was the standard, "beat up on the frontrunners" week. Simon couldn't say enough negative things about Melinda and Lakisha when they were on stage, so he used Chris' slot to continue talking about how they weren't very good. Doesn't bode well for Chris. Or anyone else not named Lakisha or Melinda.

I thought Melinda and Lakisha were both pretty good; at the very least, they're still the class of the competition. But this was the week when Simon tried especially hard to knock them down a peg; to the detriment of everyone else.

I still say Sanjaya is the only remaining guy with any chance of winning at all. I thought some of the various looks he gave the camera at the end of his song were particularly creepy, though. I guess that's what happens when a sexually ambiguous 17-year-old hops on stage in front of millions of viewers and tries to give us "sexy". I can't say there's not something awesome about the kid, though.

Whether or not it is a singing competition is irrelevant. I'm not saying every week you need Tony Bennett there, but if I asked you to name the 3,000 best singers in music, would Jennifer Lopez be on that list? I realize there's concerns far bigger than that involved but really, it just seems kind of silly as a viewer. Especially then when they bitch at contestants like Haley for doing exactly what made the mentor a star in the first place.

But to credit these people for their chart success is fallacious. Jennifer Lopez is somewhere around #92 on the list of people responsible for her musical career. Her stylist, her PR guys, her record exec, her personal trainer, some random VP at MTV, and the editor of People Magazine all rank above her. I'm not saying that people like her don't have a place, but I guess just as one lone viewer I'd like to see their advice me more overarching. I liked when she was trying to work on choreography and movement with Lakisha, since that's something I would actually trust her opinion on.

And really, I think hearing Sanjaya try to do "Cornflake Girl" could be the greatest moment in tv history ;)

I'm totally not with you here. Simon was dead on with all his critiques last night except Chris. He didn't have to go out of his way to say anything, it was all perfectly true. Lakisha flat out sucked and anyone that still considers her a contender is fooling themselves. Melinda was boring. Haley looked insulted, but she knows Simon absolutly nailed what she was trying to do.

The "contenders", or those that I think CAN win this thing looking at all factors, as of now in my view are very clearly Blake, Melinda and Jordin.

Agreed. Lakisha is pretty brutal, in my eyes. Not only that, but she's already coming across as a diva by ignoring people's instructions - as if she knows better than superstars who've sold millions of albums. She can sing, but she's so one-dimensional. I find it annoying how she and Melinda look for loopholes on theme weeks. Sure, it makes them smart, but it comes across as lame when the theme is British Invasion week and they opt for the loophole that the song can qualify if the writer is British... even though the song isn't from the said time period or by one of the artists who's part of that theme.

Blake is safe every week. Jordin is my pick to win it all - unlike Blake, from time to time she will put on memorable performances with a wow factor. I'd be okay with them as the final two, but this year is seriously lacking in quality when compared to other years. Melinda's great... but I just don't see her winning yet. And who knows if she's got the chops to actually perform music that's popular enough for people to want to buy.

Tori Amos would try to sell us on the idea that LaKisha is the reincarnation of a volcano goddess, and that Sanjaya reminds her of a wood sprite that helped her get through a particularly nasty out of body experience.

Anyway, it'll come down to Phil or Haley, and neither of them will be missed especially. But my money's on Phil to go home.

Naw, but she'd be near the top of my list of hugely successful pop stars. Tony Bennett was a nice break because I respect him for so much more than simply selling records and concert tickets. But that's what these contestants are being groomed for, and the winner is guaranteed to be given a real go of it.

The next winner of American Idol will be any different from this? The only difference is that J.Lo was discovered by the old pop star machine. This is the new pop star machine.

As much as I would love to see a version of this show that appealed to my musical tastes (and my definition of "music" and "performance"), this process simply could never find the next Tom Waits, Tori Amos, or anyone else of that ilk.

I think Simon is constantly playing games with the contestants, the other judges, and the audience. And I think he does it because it needs to be done.

If there's a crime to this season of AI (and maybe others, I haven't watched it enough to know), it's that they've got a group of people with great singing chops, but almost no conviction whatsoever. The winner will hopefully be the one who eventually shows that he or she has some.

I would tend to believe that the selection of "mentors" has a lot more to do with how much of a star that person is (and thus what kind of interest having that "mentor" might generate) than any kind of expertise that "mentor" might possess.

J-Lo and Stefani are big stars, what they may or may not know is irrelevant. And it would seem to me that the whole concept of "American Idol" is to find someone that can be molded into a giant star, not necessarily finding the most talented person. (Well, actually the concept of "American Idol" is to create a show that will generate huge ratings. Finding an actual star is really just gravy.)

Well probably no, he can't save himself. In thinking about who else could drop below him you've got Chris Richardson and ...well Chris Richardson. I thought Chris's best week was back when he did a country song so next week probably helps him out a ton. His voice warble just works for that type of song. Meanwhile we've seen what Phil does with country and it wasn't pretty.

this season hasn't done much for me. I liked Gina the most, and agree she probably isn't that bad but just didn't get the time to show it. I kinda feel the same way about both Haley and Jordin that Simon was with Antonella, I just wish they could sing better. With Haley gone i guess i'm in the Jordin boat and hope she can show me some soul and feeling. I don't really care for anybody else and if she goes, so do I.

Actually I would say American Idol is a singing competition (although not a good one judging by this year's talent) more than a search for the next star. Look at the front runner by a wide margin, Melinda. She's winning because she is a singer, not because she is a pop star. If Melinda does win then like Taylor last year it will be only because she had the flexibility to sing different genres. When people realize she isn't a very good pop star her album will flop.

If American Idol was a competition to find the next star then Taylor wouldn't have won last year and Melinda wouldn't win this year. Chris Daughtry would've won last year and Blake would win this year. Same thing with when Rueben and Fantasia won, neither one of them were the best stars, they were the best singers.

American Idol basically just lucked out with Kelly and Carrie because they could sing and were stars.
