I love Locke episodes. It was great to see the whole cast together in an episode, and we got back to a slightly more 'classic' Lost format (people traipsing through the jungle, weird mystical stuff, polar bears, etc.)

So, does this mean Desmond will be having flash-forwards now? Does he have Walt's powers?

Scene: Mark DeRosa's brain. The year is 2005.
Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Come on, another position change? One day it's second base, the next day right field, now it's third? Why, I oughta go into Buck's office and throw his talking fish on the floor!
Other part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Hold on, other part of the brain. We're making $500,000 this year. Last year we made $725,000. All for playing a damn kids' game. This is, as they say in Brainland, a no-"us"-er. We're not going to complain.

I love how every time there's a Locke episode, I think to myself "NOW we're going to see how he gets paralyzed!" and then they somehow manage to not deliver. Watching Locke as part of a criminal commune was amusing. Interesting paralell between Locke and the undercover cop and Sun and Colleen from last week, and how while at gunpoint they admitted to knowing all about them and that they weren't a murderer and wouldn't kill them. Knowing that Sun shot Colleen, should we infer that Locke shot the cop?

I need to go back and rewatch Locke's whole vision. Aaron, Claire, and Charlie are safe 'for now'??? (I guess they're flashback episodes are later in the season...) Desmond, as the pilot, is helping himself? Interesting...

I like how that now that Jack is gone, Locke is able to become the de facto leader. It was funny to see that they needed random castaways to be all "where's Jack?" since just about everyone else in the cast was occupied at the moment. Hopefully Locke can reign in Sayid's crazy military planning, and can begin to go all bad ass on the Others. It would certainly seem the Island wants Locke to go after them.

Do polar bears really drag their prey to a den to eat it, or is this a side effect of Dharma messing with them. The logo (was that the Pearl logo?) on the skeleton shirt was amusing.

THIS felt like it should have been the season premiere. (especially with the opening reminiscent of Jack's awakening after the plane crash.)

I thought it was funny to see a quick glimpse of Juliet in the ad for The Santa Clause 2 - almost made me wish she had had the gun to Tim Allen's head last week instead of Kate's - would have paid her to pull the trigger too.

I have to agree with Eddie that I always expect to see how Locke gets paralyzed whenever they have a Locke flashback. Interesting that once again they show us how easily Locke is led by others to do as they please. It should be even more interesting to see if he really can adapt to the role of leader.

Great Altered States reference by Charlie just before Locke's hallucinations in the sweat lodge. I have to go online today to watch the whole trip again.

Loved Hurley's first appearance of the season - Dude......

Hope to see more of Boone as we see deeper into Locke's psyche - I almost didn't recognize him at first.

Next week looks brutal - it is next Wednesday yet ?

It was pretty clear that Locke didn't/couldn't shoot the cop.

Kinda along the same lines, when we saw Locke on the ground, I was hoping he was going to wiggle his toes like he did after waking up post-crash.

I thought it was a little odd and disturbing seeing Locke being involved in a large illegal marihuana operation when his character is supposed to be religous and good. Even the Others wanted him.

Also, what was it that Locke picked up and looked at inside the polar bear cave ?

A Tonka truck. Maybe the bear dragged off one of the village kids too.

I enjoyed Charlie's righteousness in mocking Locke.

I remember Henry Gale saying the Others wanted him but wasn't that just a trick? He ended up wanting the four that were kidnapped (Kate, Jack, Sawyer, and Hurley). Does anybody besides me think that Jack will become an Other and Locke will lead the castaways? It's looked all show like we were going to head towards Jack vs Locke in some way.

I can see it if Jack leads the effort to leave the island and return to their lives, and Locke leads the effort to stay and explore their new ones.

And that would follow the early theme of game pieces regarding Locke. He taught Walt how to play backgammon and the fundamental element of opposing sides. The black/white opposition came up in Claire's dream about Locke. Locke's earliest flashback starts with him playing Mousetrap (another game with another child) at a toy store. That black white dichotomy is seen in Locke/Ecko and the smoke and hatch. Henry could be the gamesmaster here, playing the survivor camps against each other. And, maybe tellingly, he started off with Locke and moved to Michael, showing more black/white opposition.

Good observation with the Jack vs. Locke, Round II predictions.

Something about Locke, but he seems to fall into a sorta' mentor role to younger guys quite often. First with Walt, then with Boone. In the flashback, the young undercover cop. Currently, Charlie's following him around as his second. Maybe it's tied into the shoddy treatment he received from his dad, so he feels he has to be a "big brother" to young bucks.

Hurley's first (real) apearance of the new season and he immeidately drops his catchphrase. I really marked out for that. Reminded me of "Happy Days", when Fonzie would appear, say "eyyyy" and the audience would cheer.

I have one question to ask. Back in season one, did we see the polar bear when Walt and Michael were trapped in a big-ass banyan tree? Might've seemed unreasonable that they hadn't encountered the (second) polar bear until last night, but I think they already did.

The polar bear trapped Walt in the tree, and Locke and Michael saved him, with Michael stabbing the bear in the paw to run it off. (ep 1x14: Special)

I might be willing to buy more into this if they hadn't drifted away from the theme so much last season. If they are returning to a Jack vs. Locke storyline (I still love when Jack says "We've got a Locke problem."), that would be cool, but the whole black-white thing is lost on me for now. As for Michael's involvement, I'm of the theory that they were faced with needing to write Walt out because Malcolm David Kelly was growing too fast, and they needed to write out Ana Lucia and Libby for DUI reasons, and they were lucky enough to stumble into a way to make that all work together. The only person who got screwed was Harold Perrineau. So I'm not ascribing Michael's involvement to any greater theme much.

The one interesting aspect of the Jack-Locke conflict is that if you regard them as "Man of Science, Man of Faith", then right now, Jack is being influenced by a seemingly scientific faction (even if they aren't DHARMA, they are using their supplies and tools), while Locke has reverted back to his faith in the island (anyone else catch that he set up his sweat lodge inside Eko's church? Does Eko have to consecrate that, or can that already be considered Holy Ground?). They very well may be coming around on that very conflict. Of course, if you extrapolate that topic, could it mean that if, as Ben says, the Others are "the good guys", does that make Locke, and by extenstion, the Island, the bad guys? I could keep going on about this all day...

I think Henry is comparing himself to another faction of Others who are the bad guys.

Amen! I saw his name and thought "Boone's coming back" and then pretty much knew where he was coming in as the sweat lodge was being set up. It was good to see him, but it would have been nice to be surprised. I think I'll have to try to ignore opening credits from now on.

One of the reasons that they haven't done the 'how Locke was paralyzed' flashback may be because they simply haven't thought up a cool enough story for it yet. People have been waiting with bated breath for that episode since the fourth-ever Lost, so Lindelof/Cuse and company want to make sure it's extra-special.

One thing that kind of bothered me about the final scene at camp: Michael. When Hurley said Jack, Kate, Sawyer were gone, nobody asked what happened to Michael. The real-world answer is "Harold Perrineau isn't on the show any more," but within the internal logic of the show, the first question asked about Michael's search party to go find his son should be....where are Michael and his son?

Also, Claire cluelessly asked where Sayid, Jin and Sun were, but wouldn't the rest of the castaways have seen them go off in the boat? You'd figure that Sayid would've come up with some sort of cover story, like they were using the boat for fishing.

Maybe Locke is paralyzed because he refused to kill the cop, so the dopers gave him a beatdown.

If my memory is not failing me, it was because of his reaction after a deck he was on collapsed and a few people died.
