Yes, I received the dreaded "Disc Read Error" message the other day. I thought (hoped) that it might just be because of the insane heat wave we've been having, and it was kind of weird in that the disc drive started clicking and freezing while I was playing a game, but I could eject and replace the disc and the game would start again. However, watching a DVD later on led to it locking up and now I have a bum PS2.

The question I have is, has anybody actually cracked open their PS2 and dealt with this successfully? I found this article which is a pretty cool step-by-step on how to do it, but I don't want to go through the hassle if it's ultimately something that doesn't ever work.

I just had the same thing happen in the last couple of months. I followed the same instructions and was expecting to find some cat or dog hair in there, which could have been blocking the laser. When I got to the insides, it was pretty clean, no dust, no hair. I sprayed some air in there just to see if anything was hidden, but no luck. I did the rotor adjustment, but I couldn't get it to work perfectly, it would keep skipping. I ended up trading it with my sister, she had her ex-boyfriend's old one (he thought his was broken). Long story short, she tried my PS2 after I left and said it worked fine. I later found the disc i was testing it with had some scratches. I may have indeed fixed mine by blowing some air in there. If the warranty is up on your machine it might be worth it to open it up to see if there is any dirt/hair/etc. One thing I did find out, the screws are in there pretty tight. The good news is, I didn't have any extra parts when I put it back together.

I actually used those exact same intructions not so long ago and it helped mine. Though I was only having problems with the blue discs. Worth a try for sure.

SONY repaired my DRE for free, even after my warranty had expired. The advice I was given, and used, was to mention DRE and nothing else. It took them about 6 weeks to turn it around, but that was partially my fault in that I waited until mid-November to send it in.

I think the only catch is that it must be an original PS2 and it cannot be modded.

Edit:

This might have something to do with it:

I didn't use any instructions, but I brought my old one into work and a buddy opened it up and cleaned everything. After putting it back together I got another couple of months of use with no problems, but then I started getting the errors again.

After that I purchased my new one and gave the old one to my roommate, who uses it infrequently, and he hasn't had any trouble with it.

Have you tried some compressed air? Sometimes that's all it takes, and it's only like, six bucks a can. Worth a shot, at least.

Assuming you meant the SCPH-50001, are you sure your model doesn't apply? ( PlayStation®2 Class Action Settlement)

You are a Class Member and part of the settlement if you purchased in the United States or Canada from a retailer a new, unused PS2 Console Model Number 30001, 30001R, 35001, 39001, 39010, 50001, or 50010. You are also a Class Member if you received a new, unused PS2 Console Model Number 30001, 30001R, 35001, 39001, 39010, 50001, or 50010 as a gift from the original purchaser.

I'd call them and see what happens. Worst case, you still have to try the fix yourself.

I have the original launch day PS2 (one of the few that still work 6 years later) I got the DRE about 2 years ago especially with blue disk (CD), so I opened mines up and adjusted the wheel until the laser was a little closer. Haven't had a problem since.

I can't complain about the GC. At this point, I would only really get the PS2 for a few games (namely, any DDR one) but I have a PS1 for that. That, after some, ahem, tweaking, should suffice for my PS gaming needs. ^_^
