I enjoyed the hell out of it. I do think they went a little overboard with the whole "Don't expect a sequel!" thing they did, but liked the story overall.

I think part of the problem was that they tried to fit too much movie into the script, where you had five or six really decent storylines happening all at once, and there just wasn't enough time to treat each one properly. So, yeah, it was a little disappointing that they glossed over so much of the storytelling, but on the other hand, I think this is the first movie that treated the Magneto storyline with the proper amount of gravity.

Maybe it's because I've become so displaced from the comics, but I really did think this had the best stories of the three, but ended up feeling a bit rushed. I would have liked a bit more with Rogue/Bobby/Kitty or Magneto/Xavier or whatever, but still, it was way better than just about every other film I've seen this year, and probably my favorite in the series overall (in retrospect, X-Men feels a little flat overall and X-2's story was pretty lame by comparison).

As a movie fan, this was a mildly decent popcorn flick at best. It got tedious quickly, but it still isn't anywhere close to the worst movie I've seen this year (that title goes to Date Movie).

As a COMIC fan, let me just give a hearty "Fuck You" to one Brett Ratner. Since this rant will contain spoilers, I will make good use of the spoiler tag:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
No two characters, other than Wolverine (and even then, he really has his own history), have personified the X-mythos more than Cyclops and Charles Xavier. To not only kill them off, but kill them off BEFORE THE HALFWAY POINT is a slap in the face of fans who have followed the X-Men for years. (Let's not even mention that Cyclops was given maybe 10 minutes of screen time.) But Ratner killed them off for, what I can only surmise, shock value and as an excuse to use some more elaborate special effects. And I won't even get into the other mutants that were killed off for the sake of being killed off. I realize this was the last X-movie, but this was too much. The reason the X-Men became a successful film franchise to begin with was because Bryan Singer was able to make a great, intelligent film while also creating a movie FOR comic fans, not to spite them. I was very willing to give Ratner the benefit of the doubt, but he proved every naysayer right. The X-franchise is dead. Nothing to see here.

And on top of that, they not only made the Juggernaut a mutant (which I don't mind so much, because the Ultimate X-Men line has been going with that interpretation for a while), but they made him AUSTRALIAN!!! GOOD LORD! Who did THAT casting job? The Juggernaut has always been a large, brutish, blue-collar monster of a man, not an Aussie with an attitude problem.

EDIT: Although, in spite of all this, Juggernaut gets Line of the Movie with "Don't you know who I am? I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!" Which, amazingly, is an homage to an internet video that's apparently been out a while. It's actually pretty funny.

Yeah, this was bad. But just to show that I'm not completely negative, I'll list three things I DO like about X3.

1. The Multiple Man rules it! For the brief time he was on-screen, Madrox stole the show.
2. Kitty Pryde was VERY endearing as a character, for as little time as was given to develop it. She showed a lot of that innocence that made her popular in the first place.
3. Rogue's ending. I won't spoil it here, but it was heartwarming and makes you wish that her comic counterpart could eventually have such a resolution.

However, that barely merits a rental. Skip X-Men 3. Wait 30 days and catch Superman Returns and watch Bryan Singer show the world how to make a good film for casual moviegoers AND comic book fans.

Ratner didn't write it. He just steered a crappy ship that someone else built.

I liked everything from the Golden Gate Bridge until just before the end. Everything else was bland, unengaging, or flat out ludicrous.

And yes, Multiple Man owned.

I don't know if I'd complain about the character deaths thing, given that the comics are so flippant about it (how many characters have they killed and brougth back over the years)? Heck, didn't they just get done writing Colossus back into the mythos?

EDITED to say that I think the biggest (perhaps only) true travesty of this film was that Alan Cumming wasn't brought back to play Nightcrawler.

Which also makes no sense, because Spike was never even a villain in X-Men mythos, as far as I know.

Cyclops and Professor X weren't killed off for shock value, they were killed off because a)James Marsden had signed on to SUPERMAN RETURNS and wasn't gonna be around for most of the shoot, and b)Patrick Stewart wanted out to do theatre work in England for the last half of last year. Also Juggernaut wasn't Australian, he was English. I'm not sure where you got the Aussie accent from, coz Vinnie Jones certainly isn't capable of approximating one. He's a barely-able-to-act ex-footballer, fer Cripes' sakes.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. Cyclops is never seen dead on screen in the film, so they'd have an easy out if they ever wanted to bring him back. That said, it makes perfect sense to kill him. Phoenix in the comic book destroyed planets, but that isn't feasible and/or a tangible way to build dread in a film audience, so you have to find a cinematic means for conveying the threat of the Phoenix. Killing Cyclops and Professor X (and by the way, that whole sequence in her childhood home was one of the best setpieces of the entire series) is a really good way of conveying the threat.

I hate that everyone craps on Ratner, I think all things considered (short shooting schedule, rushed post-production, etc) he pulled it off.

"'X -Men: The Last Stand' will probably satisfy series fans, at least initially, though as they reflect on it later they may decide it's not much fun--the same trajectory devotees followed with the last three 'Star Wars' movies. Let's hope Singer will have better luck than Ratner."

Fans tend to overrate movies when they first come out and react defensively to criticism. Why should audiences care if the studio rushed the film? Time will tell whether the movie is actually memorable or just another piece of pop crap rolled out to milk a hot property.

Good films don't need lame excuses.

Spoiler response:

Why did they kill off Cyclops? So Hugh Jackman could play the love story with Jean. He's the top draw for the female audience, and Wolverine is the central character of the trilogy.

Me, I loved the film because it was a good superhero film, not the film they could have/should have/I would have made. This is a story that could only be told using the X-franchise and featured a chunk of geek moments for casual comic fans. I saw it with two women, one who was familiar with the comics and one who only knew the film franchise. We all enjoyed it.

I got my money's worth, and I look forward to the deleted scenes on the DVD, no doubt offered before Christmas.

Although this movie completes the trilogy, Fox is claiming there will be an X-Men 4 (themovieblog.com).

Well, the ending of the movie sorta did leave the possibility of another sequel open. I suppose they could use this to delve into Apocalypse, or any of the other untapped X-Men villains.

It will be strange to not have Cyclops or Stewart as Xavier around, though.
I can only hope Berry decides to exit the franchise after this movie, though.

That X4 confirmation is an ooooold misquote. Fox have done no such thing. And the multiple-movie contracts that the cast have signed are option deals, not an admittance that they're planing three more movies. Although both Vinnie Jones and Kelsey Grammer have recently claimed to be involved in the WOLVERINE spin-off.

Saw it last night, and I had been *dreading* it for weeks.

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
-Too much Storm
-Too much cheesy dialogue
-Didn't recognize her as Callisto, but geez. (paraphrase) "What are your powers?" "I'm fast, and I can rate mutants numerically." Before I realized she was Callisto, I figured her mutant name was "Plot Contrivance".
-The Dark Phoenix storyline was completely tacked on. They could have made the same movie (minus the two big deaths) without her. Notice how many scenes had Jean standing off to the side looking blank; that's because they had nothing for her to do. You could tell that they either didn't like being forced to do the Phoenix storyline or they had no idea what to do.
-My fiancee pointed out to me that when the 5-6 X-Men are holding the line at the lab, everyone bull rushes them, with no apparent mutant powers. That's just lazy.
-So Magneto might still have some power left? I would be okay with that, but he got FOUR needles in him. Shouldn't he be the last mutant on earth to regain their powers?

All that being said, I *still* enjoyed the movie way more than I thought I would, and I'm glad I saw it.

If they wanted to do X4 and bring back "cured" mutants, you can easily say that the "cure" turned out not to be permanent or that Magneto found a way to reverse it. Or that could be a basis for the plot of the movie.

EDIT: nevermind

There's already been too much empasized about how this is the last of the X-movies. Can't turn back from that now. Well, they COULD, but it wouldn't be a good idea.

The only thing left to do now is focus on the spin-offs. No Xavier, no Cyclops, (thankfully) no Halle Berry, no problem. It's time to focus on Wolverine and Magneto's upcoming films, because there's a lot of potential with their backstories that I'd hate to see wasted.

I'm a hardcore X-Men fan, so I'd have seen anything they threw out there. This wasn't as good as the first two. I liked Brett Ratner's Rush Hours...he should stick with those.

This may contain some spoilers, but I figure by this point everyone reading/posting here has already seen the movie.

The opening started with a bad taste with Angel clipping his wings, unnecessary bloody. Later he decides he likes his wings after all.

The plot of the cure is lifted from Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men (7-12). It wasn't a bad story, but no classic. The Dark Phoenix saga was 100 times better in the comics.

It also took more of the Ultimate tilt, how they are working with the White House and Wolverine is Fury's hitman.

It was too hard to tell the difference between good and bad Jean (stretched face). If you can't spring for the incandescent glow at least give her the big hair. And I would've liked an explanation for why she would turn on Cyclops; maybe she blamed him for her death?

The fan's would've liked to see Colossus fight the Juggernaut.

Major Plot hole, Magneto's goal was to get to Leech, the boy. Yet even killing him would not destroy the drug which everyone has in all their weapons. And why not just use one of the 4 darts to stop Phoenix?

For the good: Fraser's Beast was very good. The moving goldengate bridge was cool.

In wrestling terms, this felt like a thrown together pay-per-view, where the fan favorites are forced to job as payback for some backstage crap that only matters to the producers.

I guess nobody else had a problem with this, but I found Grammer as Beast VERY DISTRACTING. Like Jar Jar Binks and the Green Goblin suit. He stood out like a sore thumb. All I could think was, "Hey that's Frasier Crane with blue fur and make-up". He just looked so different than any other person on screen. He has such a distinctive voice, I couldn't separate the actor from the character. Sideshow Bob makeup might have been less distracting....

I liked this one the best of the three.

The final battle was exciting and the Kitty Pride/Juggernaut chase scene was just fun. The special effects were pretty good--they've come a long way- even since the first movie.

So here's my question: In a million years, did you ever think this would happen? One decade ago, I didn't even have an e-mail address or know what the Internet was ... now I can watch Piper slam a coconut against Snuka's head whenever I want? What will the world be like 10 years from now? Is it possible to procrastinate for 24 hours a day? Are we headed that way? -Bill Simmons on YouTube.
