I guess Arturs Irbe found the Fountain of Youth on the way to Turin.

Will the Americans be able to blame their play on Gretzky too?

Big props to NBC for showing the games on Universal HD, as hockey in HD is just amazingly great.

Ahaaha, we won a game. Yeah it was against Kazakhstan but at this point I'll take it. Being the Lightning fan, I'm dissapointed that Grammar gave up all those goals in his (only) start. Is anyone else gonna watch the women's semifinals and finals?

edit/

I forgot that I saw the Swiss win today, guess that happens when you watch a game at 8 in the morning. Great game though, with the Swiss just trying to give it away at times. When the Swiss turn on the forecheck they are a pretty formidable team, and with Abiescher(sp) in net they might be in line for a medal.

I don't get all the bashing on team USA.
Yes they lost to a team with hardly any NHL players.
But Irbe has been quite stellar in the past, especially at tournaments such as these.

The czechs losing to Switzerland is a bigger deal imo.
So far the czechs haven't looked good in either of their games, and that has nothing to do with Hasek.

The russians looked sharp in their game against Sweden.
Or maybe Sweden looked very sluggish. Some good long passes and breakaways by the guys in red.

Have to admit I haven't seen anything of team Canada yet..
but they seem to be doing alright. Same thing goes for Finland.

Yes, If I get the chance I will watch the women's games too.

They did? I thought we had a tie and a win so far. Or are you talking about something else?

Sorry, I meant to say a tie.
Which makes it even more silly when people are all over them.

Let's see how the US does against Slovakia tomorrow.

The Slovaks have looked pretty darn good so far, handling the Russians and Latvia...

Ruutu will be a marked man.

The Russians are looking sharp.
Same goes for Finland and Slovakia.

the Czechs have disappointed me so far.
The loss of Hasek cannot have such a big influence..
They seem sluggish at times, dunno how to describe it.

Ofcourse the elimination rounds will be totally different.
But for now I think the Russians might take the gold.

Canada looked completely flat in a 2-0 Russia quarterfinal win.

I am sad.

O CANADA! (2 RUSSIA!)

I don't want to impose my own biases on the game, but I choose to interpret it fitting that Canada was done in by the 21-year old #1 pick rookie phenom, and had no 18-year old #1 pick rookie phenom to answer him.

Also, how great is Malkin? Plz plz plz let team stay in Pittsburgh and let Malkin ever show up.

Dear Canadian Olympic hockey team,

That thing behind the goalie with the netting on it? You're supposed to put the puck in it. You don't get a refund or anything if the net is clean at the end of the game. Just thought you might want to know.

Your pal in quarterfinal elimination,
JJD

Phaneuf is Canadian? No kidding. But his name is Dion Phaneuf. I guess it's French -- I always assumed it was European. Yet this man is on my fantasy team.

I rooted for Canada in 2002 since they were led by the Lemieux-Knighted Skates Of A Mario and I wanted him to have that accomplishment. But this time around I'm back with the Czechs as I was in 1998. It's never made sense to me that I should start supporting the likes of Derian Hatcher in this thing when all of my favorite players (Jagr, Straka, Lang) were on the Czech team. The Kovalev-captained Russia with Kasparaitis also has some old friends.

The semifinals actually set themselves up pretty nicely at this point for a final that might still be worth being awake at 8 am on a Sunday to watch.

Personally, I'd love to see a Sweden-Finland final, but at this point, all the potential matchups still at least have a little juice left in them.

Canada just didn't do enough to earn it this time around.

It will be an interesting semi final round.
Finland is still undefeated but they are facing the Czechs who imo are finally improving (might have to do with the goalie?) And who will run down Ruutu..

Russia and Sweden..hrm..last time it was 5-0. I think the Swedes will be more prepared this time around.

That hip chick by Kasparitis on Gagne by the way was brilliantly brutal.

I am pretty sure that Finland faces Russia and Czechs play Sweden. Should be good games as I honestly can't tell who is going to win either game.

I know all these guys are millionaire stars, but somehow no one got it into their heads that they actually have to WANT IT! Pat Quinn looks just as uninspired as the players. (let's face it, Canada looked just like the Leafs, crappy!) Off with Quinn's head!!

As someone said as we were watching that pathetic display yesterday, this was the most uninspiring group that I have ever witnessed as a Canadian hockey team. The only guy that seemed to give a crap was Joe Sakic. (oh and Brodeur...)

Iginla, Gagne, Heatley, Thornton, Nash were all terrible.

Let's face it, if the Russians are beating you in every one on one fight for the puck, you just ain't trying enough...

Hindsight being 20/20, it seems to me that guys like Crosby, Staal, Phaneuf and Spezza would have been much more focused and would've had more desire to win...

Oh well, we got 4 years to get this straightened out, because if this happens when the Olympics are in Vancouver there will be hell to pay!!

Is it just me or does it get less and less interesting to see the pros playing in this tourney. I love hockey, but just find myself caring less about Olympics every four years. just get back to the season already.

kwik THE BINGHAMTON WHALERS!!! That brings back some memories, as a kid the family went to Whaler games all the time. Them or Elmira College.

I believe the current CBA has NHL players going to the Olympics once more in 2010, with no decision for games after that. The team owners and GMs hate the idea.

I think a 2010 Canadian team will have an almost entirely new group of players. Spezza, Staal, Crosby, Phaneuf...hopefully they'll be hungry to win on home turf.
