The Flames opened the 2005-2006 season with an ugly record. How ugly? They were 4-7-2 and heading into November in last place in the hotly-contested Northwest Divison.

Since then...6 straight wins, against Minnesota (3-0), Columbus (2-1), Vancouver (1-0), Vancouver again (4-3), Phoenix (4-3) and Colorado (5-3). The wins have moved the Flames into a tie for first place in the Northwest.

UPDATE: The Flames just beat the Red Wings 3-1 for their 8th straight win.

I think the winning/losing streaks that teams have going right now mean so fucking little.

Ofcourse streaks are going to be longer if you cannot tie a game.
The Predators started the season 8-0 while actually, in the "old era" they were 5-3 and I don't know how long their actual winning streak would have been (so not a shoot out win.) 3 games maybe?

The Penguins had a huge losing streak, but several of those were in shoot outs.
It just isn't the same.

Now maybe the Flames' streak was a real one. But in general I hear a lot of talk about fabulous winning streaks where really imo there isn't one.

*sigh* Why bother?

What it all boils down to is POINTS. Being unbeaten in four games with a 4-0-0 record is eight points. Being unbeaten in four games with a 2-0-2 record is six points. In the Flames case, wins are wins, regardless of how they are won. And eight straight wins is 16 points, which will cause ANYBODY to move up in the standings.

What IS happening to Calgary is the same issue Montreal is having....playing too many games compared to their rivals. The Flames are #5 in the conference....while playing the most games of anyone. Four more than Nashville at #4 (sorta like how Montreal is three points up on Ottawa, but has played three more games).

When we've been here ten thousand years...
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
Then when we've first begun.

This changes the balance of power in the West. I was leaning towards a San Jose-Detroit conference final but now that will have to change. A second round matchup between the Sharks and Avs should be interesting.
