I'm still one of those few remaining die-hard Bond fans.

I loved Pierce Brosnan as Bond and I thought he had at least one more in him, but Daniel Craig is an interesting choice as Bond. The tougher, grittier-style of Bond didn't work so well when Timothy Dalton had the role, but Dalton's two Bonds in the 80's weren't among the best movies of the franchise, which helped kill his chances to continue in the role. There's a romantic aspect to Bond that I'm not sure Craig has in him, or if they'll even emphasize it as much as they did with Connery, Moore, and Brosnan, but for manliness, steel-eyed toughness and ruthlessness, Craig is as good a choice as any. Bond is an assassin, after all.

I'm glad they went with someone like Craig who could grow into the role and not with an established big name star like Hugh Jackman some of the other names bandied about. Although, James Purefoy, who plays Marc Antony in HBO's Rome, would have been my choice and his name was never mentioned as a contender.

Now, hopefully, Casino Royale will actually be a good movie and not a series of wild stunts and lousy double entendres.

Who ??? Color me underwhelmed. Bad choice in my opinion.

I think James Bond should always be played by a well known actor. Unless Daniel Craig catches fire with the fans when the 3 films he is working on come out before his James Bond debut (Munich, The Visiting and Have You Heard), he will be a Bond failure just like George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton were.

Sean Penn and I both think that they should have gotten Jude Law to be the new Bond. :)

Kevin-

I have no real opinion on Craig, but remember that Sean Connery was an unknown when he got the role, & Pierce Brosnan was basically just Remington Steele LONG before he got the Bond role.

Sean Connery was the very first James Bond before the series became a successful movie franchise, so I have no problem with an unknown actor being used in that situation.

As for Pierce Brosnan, I at least knew who he was because Remington Steele was a somewhat successful weekly television show in the U.S. and the U.K......I'm betting alot more people at that time knew who Pierce Brosnan was compared to the amount of people today who know who Daniel Craig is.

But like I said, Mr. Craig might become an instant star when his 3 upcoming movies are released, so this whole conversation might be moot.

Call him Bland, James Bland

By Jeannette Walls
MSNBC
Updated: 12:29 p.m. ET Oct. 18, 2005

They’re calling him Bland — James Bland.

Last week, actor Daniel Craig was named to replace Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007. Among the other actors eyed during the lengthy search, the producers reportedly found Hugh Jackman “too fey,” Colin Farrell “too sleazy,” Eric Bana “not handsome enough,” and 5’10” Ewan McGregor “too short,” according to an alleged memo picked up in the overseas press. But plenty of fans of the series are finding the “Layer Cake” star too unBond-like.

Craig — perhaps better known for dating Kate Moss and being briefly implicated in the breakup between Jude Law and Sienna Miller than for any of his movie roles — was introduced to the press last week when he was brought to a press conference on board a speedboat. But the daredevil quality of the stunt was completely undone when Craig appeared wearing a life jacket. Craig compounded the problem when he commented that the ride had scared “the [bleep] out of me.”

Craig’s often-stiff answers to reporters’ questions also did not impress. “Why do you want to play Bond?” the gum-chewing Craig was asked. “Why not?” he replied. “What are the reasons for Bond’s enduring popularity?” came a question. Craig replied: “I don’t know the answer to that.”

The London Mirror called the event “embarrassing.” Complained one Brit TV commentator: “He looks more like a banker than James Bond.” Some fans are even less enthused. “Daniel Craig will NOT be my James Bond,” lamented a poster at CommanderBond.net on a thread devoted to Craig-bashing. “I really want this to be a bad dream.”

I can't believe they called Wolverine "too fey"...

... and yet, they aren't wrong (theboyfromoztickets.com).

No matter who they cast, if the movies are as shitty as they've been lately, it won't make a damn lick of difference who's playing Bond.

What in the hell does "fey" mean?

I'm not a bond fan and I'm kinda underwhelmed. He looks kinda old. And I agree with John about James Purefoy. He really does look the part.

I'm still surprised that it seems that Jude Law wasn't even considered for the part.

MGM/UA has always been fairly adamant about keeping costs down on Bond films if possible, especially since they're SFX heavy (and thereby pretty damned expensive). Thus, it makes sense that they find a new Bond that's lesser known (or "cheap") and develop him into a viable character. There's a huge amount of people that'll watch Bond movies just for Bond, so they don't really NEED a big name.

Here's what dictionary.com says. (dictionary.reference.com)

Fey is a term used for elves in lots of fantasy literature. So they are calling him elvish in a sense. Really, its a euphemism for gay.

Jude Law's a weak-chinned pretty boy without an ounce of the toughness needed to play Bond. Craig, on the other hand, is a fantastic actor with exceptional work in films such as Road To Perdition, Sylvia and Layer Cake. Go watch him first, then come back and kvetch about why you don't tihnk he's right for the role. He's certainly a lot closer to the original Connery mold than any of the guys cast after him.
