In addition to the signings reported here in the Modano thread (The W) there were other moves made yesterday

Chris Pronger goes from St. Louis to Edmonton for a handful of role players

Pavol Demitra winds up in LA along with longtime Hartford Wolfpack goaltender Jason Labarbera

a lot of names still out there......

Prongers knee must be totally screwed up still, either that or they are starting the cost cutting measures in St Louis. Either way, he sat and did pretty much nothing last season and when he did play he wasnt near as good as he once was.

Eric Brewer is a bit more than a role player, he's a quality defenseman....but he's ain't Chris Pronger and that's a fact. And there's still Scott Niedameyer who needs to find a home (the Oilers were a rumored destination, but I guess they're out of the picture now).

Busy busy time. My question; Habs, Leafs, Sens, and Canucks. Where'd they all drop off to?

EDIT:

The Blues: $19.7 million invested in three players. Something had to give, and this trade made the most sense. I got five bucks that says they DIDN'T shop Weight, shopped the overpaid other guy, and shopped Pronger. This was the deal that made sense (they lose the salary, gain a stable defenseman in return). A smart move by Larry Pleau.

The Oilers: Questions about hs health aside, Pronger (who has had more than a year to recover due to the lockout) will make an impact with his name alone. Kevin Lowe wanted to make a splash, and did he ever. The impact of this will be felt throughout the league, as a perennial seller just bought themselves a bonafide top-tier number one witha bullet defenseman. Who might attract more talent to the Oil City. With ths new CBA, A-N-Y-B-O-D-Y can be a player if they got the space. And the Oilers had the space. The Isbister deal makes so much more sense now (well, it did make a lot of sense before because Isbister is alright, but not great). Pronger will provide steady leadership on and off the ice of a young club who were going to make some noise anyways this year, but now will be that more exciting to watch.

x
You know it's funny. As I'm typing about the Pronger/Brewer trade, I go back to sportsnet.ca for spelling. During the TWO MINUTES inbetween then and now, the Pens have signed Sergei Gonchar (a brilliant move). Known for his offensive skills, he's a HUGE addition (Mario + Crosby + Gonchar - red line = GOALS).

Oh yeah, and the Flames have re-signed some kid named Jerome. You may have heard of him.

Apparently some teams like the Leafs and Red Wings and others that had fairly high salaries last year are holding tight as much as possible this year, letting Florida and Nashville make all the big moves with all the cap space, and then next year they'll be the ones with the cap space as their contracts all run out and there'll be more free agents next year because of the CBA than this year.

I'm not sure how the CBA works yet for free agents, but that's what a few guys on Sportsnet and TSN were saying. This is the year for the small market teams because they're starting out with so much room, but the next couple years will swing things back to the teams that are still having to deal with big contracts.

Sportsnet.ca and Tsn.ca are both reporting that the Canucks have resigned Naslund.

On an aside, Pronger missed only two games in the 03-04 season. It was the 02-03 Season that he missed. By the end of last year, he looked like he was back to his old bone crunching self.

The Oilers have done it again and have "aquired" (ie; stole) Michael Peca from the Islanders. They stole (STOLEN!!) him for Michael York and a conditional draft pick (which as long as it isn't a first rounder, who cares?). So now they have a top level defenseman in Pronger, a great leader argueably one of the best in the NHL in shutting down the top guy on the other team in Peca, plus a solid young team who were already on the verge of something grood. I don't know what Kevin Lowe ate for breakfast the past mornings, but YEEEESH.

Meanwhile, The Habs FINALLY made some moves....and landed Mathieu Dandenault and re-landed Alexei Kovalev. Not bad on both parts. Dandenault is a top four style defenseman (and this pickup will be very much better if we resign Patrice "Brisbro" at lesser money), and the Montreal pressure cooker will keep on hammering Kovalev to play hard. To be honest, I didn't expect the Habs to make much noise, so I'm happy with these two additions.

And now Peter Forsberg's going to be a Flyer. I hope they enjoy him for 60 games and half of their playoff games. (Not that I'm a bitter Avs fan right now...no.)

Apparently the hot rumours du jour are that the Leafs will sign Lindros and Jason Allison, Pittsburgh is going after Sean Burke or CuJo, and the Habs and Lightning are working on a deal that sends Lecavalier to Montreal for Koivu, that goalie the Habs took last weekend and a prospect.

Matt Tracker: Great comix this week. But why not use the Trojan corner to feature the adventures Al Wilson?
DEAN: Al Wilson rides it bareback, my brother.
Matt Tracker: Waitress, I won't need this omelette after all, thanks.
DEAN: He's too much of gentleman to assume that the lady he is with would have a disease and he's man enough to raise any offspring that should arise. HE IS AL WILSON.

Holy cow, let me know when this is all over, then I can check out who is on what team... CRAZY!!

The Forsberg deal puts the Flyers over the cap, according to TSN. Bob Clarke says he is going to make a trade to get under... If I am the other NHL GM's, I refuse all trades...

What happens if a team is over the cap now?

I think that they can't start the season above the cap, or the league would declare void the contract that put the team in that position(in the Flyers' case, Forsberg).

I think that you'll certainly need to buy a program at any hockey game you go to this season, to figure out who's who.

Holy crap, Forsberg came back to the team that drafted him.

That almost makes up for signing Derian Hatcher.

And the Pens signed Gonchar? This is an interesting time to be a hockey fan from Pennsylvania ^.^ Now if only the Pens can land Kovalev too (guess that can't happen, now)...

Eric Lindros to Toronto? I hope not! If anything, at least he can get great heath care for his next concussion.

EDIT: TSN reports that the Flames have resigned Iginla, and Bryan Berard is now a Blue Jacket.

We lost McCarty to the Flames, that is not even close to being cool. I suppose with the new caps we're going to see faces head off elsewhere and everything, but McCarty is a beast. I ran into him at the Emagine theatre in Novi here, and the man is scarred. The Grind Line'll miss him sorely.

Roenick just got sent with a third-round pick to LA, for future conisderations.

At this rate, it's going to be impossible to update all of these rosters for NHL 06.

Tie Domi's staying in Toronto! (slam sports)

If anything, I'm happy to see him stick around. Outside of his hockey career, he owns a blue chip advertising company in Toronto.

Any news on Sundin? How long is he still locked into his contract for?

and Khabibulin signs with the Blackhawks (slam.canoe.ca)

As a Rangers fan, this whole free agent signing period has been a little like a Xmas morning where I am watching all the other kids open up their packages with all their cool new toys inside and all I keep unwrapping are underwear & socks.....

Yay! I was positive they would screw this up somehow and let him go somewhere else because of money. Click Here (boston.com) Plus they signed Sergei Samsonov to a one-year qualifying offer, too.
