Vince Russo is back. He's got his own Christian wrestling promotion (and a nice website) at: http://www.ringofglory.com

To draw people to the site and spread the word of God, he says he's decided to tell his side of the Bash at the Beach screwjob in which he cut a promo on Hulk Hogan, then booked Booker T to win the WCW Title over Jeff Jarrett.

It's an interesting read.

I'm not sure I understand the entire thing, after reading the article three times. If Hogan was in on the entire thing, why would he sue Russo?

Interesting name of the company, although it sounds like copyright infringment. First thing I thought of was...is this owned by the people that run Ring of Honour?

I have read the article twice now, but I missed the point where Russo says sorry to Hogan. And I won't give my thoughts on it, because I don't know anymore what to believe!

It sounds like to me that Hogan was under the impression that his belt would still have legitimacy afterwards, and would lead to a program against Booker down the road. Instead, he was written out of the show entirely. That could provide the motivation to sue.

Well, when you allow someone to negotiate a creative control clause into their contract, as Hogan had, you get what you paid for, heh. Interesting read, and it's good to finally hear Russo's side of the story. I wonder how close it is to the truth.

And I'm glad he's now using his life to spread the word of Jesus Christ, I like that.

Yeah, all it sounds like to me is Russo defending himself.

Does Russo think it's necessary to come clean about this as his promotion launches or because Hogan is a mainstream star once again and Jarrett's leading TNA to a TV deal?

He even admits in that article that the reason he's doing it is so people come to the website of his new promotion.

Yes. I see he wrote "So why now? The answer is simple: I’m going to take a negative . . . and turn it into a positive; I’m going to take one of the most devastating nights in my life . . . and use it for God’s Glory—to make people aware of him. I’m not going to lie to you---I needed a hook to bring people to “Ring of Glory”, and this is it. And yes—I will stop at NOTHING—ABSOLUTELY NOTHING—to make people aware of Jesus Christ."

But I don't see anything in that column that suggests his relationship with Christianity. It smacks more of using the Hogan/Jarrett names to get web traffic hits, because there's nothing to suggest what he's learned from this episode to promote Christ. He does suggest he has a more professional demeanor, but nothing that speaks to behaving spiritually.

Read it again. He knew Russo would cut a promo but he didn't know what he was gonna exactly say. I think it comes down to Hogan suing because he looked bad.

Yeah, brilliant strategy--use a story that maybe eight people still care about to spread awareness of one of the most famous figures in the history of mankind.

Having just finished RD Reynolds' "Death of WCW", it's interesting to hear this story from Russo's mouth. Like Reynolds points out, there was a lot of these "work the boys" angles going around, where the in ring talents (especially Hogan, Nash, Russo and the like) were running angles without letting the locker room know what was going on. I'm not sure what the point of working the locker room was, especially since the people they should have been working was the crowd. Just another indication that the people in charge of the latter days of WCW had no idea what they were doing.

Basically Russo wanted to create his own Survivor Series '97, and was really into working the internet, so it's not so much his intention was working the lockerroom, but rather he knew that if the boys knew, it would definitely without a doubt leak to the sheets and the net.

It's not so much they should have been working the crowd as much as they should have just wrote decent wrestling storylines. Russo tried to revolutionize kayfabe so much and people just don't give a fuck.

Bah. This is Russo we're talking about. I'm somewhat afraid this will lead to a tasteless Christ-related angle. I just don't believe he's a good person. I think one of those TNA angles where he was yelling at a woman and trying to make her take her clothes off that I have up all hope that Russo deserves to live.

Well, in Russo's defense (and I don't know him or know anything about him other than what I read on the website), the numbers wouldn't matter if that was truely his purpose. The principle he is esposing is in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 8 is all about doing anything you can (obviously, there are limits) to bring just one person to Christ. So perhaps this is his motivation.

Although I admit that I am more in the "Russo's probably still mostly promoting Russo" camp.

That would be any other Christian's justification, but I get the feeling Russo honestly thinks that all of wrestling fandom was counting down the seconds to his site launch so they could find out the inside scoop on a shoot angle that petered out in a promotion that went out of business over a title that's been retired which resulted in a lawsuit that's been settled.

That's what makes it pathetic--Bash at the Beach was five years ago, and Russo's still talking about it like it was the greatest moment in wrestling, because if it wasn't then he's just a has-been clinging to his expired 15 minutes of fame. It's a little like Virgil doing autograph signings at comic book conventions and being billed as a "wrestling legend."

I suppose his heart's in the right place--or it will be until he volunteers to be TD Jakes's tag partner while wearing a suspiciously concealing shirt. And if he can win over a few souls, good for him. But I'd be amazed if anyone who's still interested in the Bash scandal had never, ever heard of Jesus Christ until they read Russo's site.

Once again, I'm not in the "support Russo" camp, but he's not trying to let people "know who Jesus is", he's trying to spread the message of Jesus. Everybody knows who Jesus is. That doesn't mean that some people aren't capable of being opened up to the message and perhaps enrich their lives, change their negative ways, etc.

I don't know how much I believe him, but that seems like the message he's speaking of, moreso than "hey so there's this Jesus guy, ever heard of him?"

Count me in as someone who believes Kane deserves a REAL push because: 1. WWE owes him SOMETHING after the Katie Vick nonsense that just about killed his entire character. 2.
