Like CRZ, I'd like to hear more about this before I jump to conclusions. Did they decide mutally that "Hey, this probably isn't a great environment for you right now, head to Japan." and release that way? Is there a no-compete clause involved? Can he go to TNA? Does this have anything to do with Edge & Lita?

Dammit, dammit, DAMMIT! I was looking forward to seeing his return as well... he's been one of my favorite wrestlers for some time now.

I hope he goes to TNA and sticks it to WWE by taking the NWA World Title and doing something to give casual fans a reason to watch TNA in the first place. (Not that the title is ever going off of Jarrett. Sheesh, at least Triple H loses once in awhile.)

Wade Keller says:

There will be a lot of heat on Edge and Lita in some circles for the release of Matt Hardy, but when it comes down to it, of the two (Edge or Hardy), Hardy was more expendable because management is high on Edge and the strides he's taken in the last year, whereas there are strongly mixed opinions on Hardy's marketability, interviews, and ring style among WWE management. Plus, it worked against Hardy in management's eyes that he took the situation public on his website to the point that it led to chants against babyface character Lita at a few events, especially in the Carlinas where Hardy has a strong grassroots following. Edge and Lita scored points with management when their side of the story did not go public because they were rewarded for keeping things "in house." There are some people in power in TNA who are high on Hardy's potential, and others who aren't. Given his national profile, and that his brother Jeff works there, it should be considered a given they'd offer him work. Whether he accepts their offer in terms of pay scale is another matter.

I was thinking about that this morning, and I'm sure there are plenty of ways they could go. The Hardyz, The Hardy Brothers, The (e)Xtreme Team, Beast, The Beast, just to name a few. This is probably the least of their concerns.

As for watching TNA to see Matt & Rhyno, I'm not so sure if I would. I like those guys, but I happened to catch a few minutes of a match on TNA over the weekend between a couple of guys I've read about but had never seen previously. It was pretty bad. The portion of the match I saw came off more like a couple of guys running down the list of moves & sequences they planned on doing beforehand, as opposed to 2 guys fighting in a ring actually trying to hurt each other & win. Little/no/bad selling, no facial expressions, no real flow to the match at all. All this pretty much goes for all of the TNA stuff I've seen so far. [/offtopic]

I'd seriously doubt TNA (or any other federation) would have a desire to use the "Mattitude" or "Version 1" trademarks. As for the "Hardy Boyz," change it to "Hardy Boys" and you're fine.

...And who knows, maybe some deals can be worked out. I read somewhere that WWE offered TNA Billy Gunn™ and Road Dogg™, in exchange to let a couple TNA contracted wrestlers work the One Night Stand PPV.

I think it's quite good that he's been released as he wasn't much cop anyway and was the inferior brother in the team.

For what it's worth, Meltzer is defining it as a release, and says there's a 90-day no-compete clause that would delay any potential move to another company (such as TNA). This all in his latest update.

I don't know, I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand I really think it's unfair for Matt to be put in that situation and then be let go, but on the other hand I don't really care too much for the fact that he made it so public on his website. I understand the man was hurting, and rightfully so, but that was sort of immature on a LiveJournal scale. Ideally I'd like to see Lita be let go because 1.) she's the one that cheated on him, 2.) she actively pursued a relationship that could lead to ramifications in the lockerroom, and 3.) she can't go more than a few months without injuring herself which hurts the WWE's ability to consistently market her. I guess the last statement could be said about Hardy as well though, though.

Well, if WWE had to decide between letting Edge or Matt go, its not a big surprise to see them pick Edge. I mean, Edge is the bigger star. Matt has been injured, off TV, and out of the minds of most fans. You cant fire Edge after giving him this push.

It kind of reminds me of the fallout from the Kliq incident at MSG way back when. They couldnt punish Nash or Hall since they were on the way out. They didnt punish Shawn cause he was the champ at the time. So, they screw HHH for a while and had him in hog pen matches. Even though Shawn should haven had some kind of punishment, he didn't cause he was their guy. Edge is their guy I guess (or at least more than Matt), so even though most of the blame in on Edge, he isnt the one looking for work.

I think the impact of everyone's outrage has to be somewhat diluted at this point given that Hardy's been off television since August. It's not like there is going to be a giant gaping hole in RAW now that he's been canned. There will be virtually no difference whatsoever in the product. I also seriously doubt that after doing what they did, Edge and Lita conspired to have Matt let go. He acted fantastically juvenile in going public. This is not the first time this has happened to someone, and yes, it is a terrible thing but it happens, you don't have to embarrass the company like that and hurt these talents' abilities to perform in the roles they portray. Lita is a kid-friendly character, Kane's baby aside, and he interfered with her professionally. If I was dating someone at Sears, where I work, and she cheated on me with another Sears employee, and then I went on my website and detailed the whole sordid affair, I'm pretty sure I'd get fired too.

I also doubt winning the NWA title would "stick it" to WWE. This is just another guy who wasn't doing much of value when he worked for them. I have yet to see one significant performer leave WWE for TNA in a fashion that had any potential to undermine the unquestioned stance of WWE as the only meaningful wrestling company in the world today.

Bah, Lita cheated on her boyfriend, and Edge cheated on his wife, and Matt's the villain here because he was deeply upset about it and decided to tell people? He was, and probably still is, a man in pain, for godsakes.

And in terms of Lita being a kid-friendly character, I wouldn't define "woman who gets raped, allowed herself to get knocked up, stupidly put the rights to marry her on the line in a match, married the same guy who raped her and eventually fell in love with him" as a kid-friendly character. WWE couldn't have booked that angle more condescendingly if they'd tried.

And in terms of her personal life, the less said, the better... not going to beat the dead horse that I already talked about two paragraphs ago. Futhermore, she almost kills herself with horribly botched moves everytime she gets into the ring, and is almost always injured. So... why is Lita a fan-favorite, in real life or in-character?

IIRC, wasn't Edge's wife some other wrestler's sister? (Christian's?) Or was that a storyline thing?

Edge was originally married to Val Venis's sister, but allegedly cheated on her, leading to the end of that marriage. His new wife isn't related to anyone in the company.

Interestingly enough, Venis stopped appearing on television around the time their marriage probably went to hell.

If Edge sleeping with someone close to a WWE wrestler is all it takes for that wrestler to get fired, here's hoping for Edge to sleep with Sara Calloway, Stephanie McMahon, Orton's ring rats, and Pat Patterson (Grenier). Then he could finish it up by masturbating, which would in turn get himself fired.

If Matt was indeed fired, what a shitty thing for the WWE to do. You would think they would at least move him back to Smackdown or something. Edge sucks.

Yeah, WWE pushes their tag team division so well, I blanked out and forgot Tajiri was the tag team champ now--although that's probably only cause Eugene got injured and Regal needed someone to tag with. What I actually meant was for Tajiri to get an I-C or even World title push. Hence, my delusional thought motif.

Did I say he's the villain? He's childish, is all. There isn't one other celebrity I can think of who uses the internet to vent on their personal relationships going awry. I haven't defended Lita and Edge's actions, but WWE is a business. Everyone wants to bawl and claim they hate WWE because they fired people like Kanyon and Goldust and Rico and Rhyno and Matt but none of those people were ever going to make them money, for a variety of reasons. It's not their job to spank naughty talent, they look at who is in a better position to draw them money. Looks to me that by like they made the right decision since Lita is always popular, Edge is at his peak, and Matt was never more than a semi-over midcard act.

This is one storyline in her career. It didn't, and doesn't erase her rapport with the fans. She's still kid friendly and is seen as a strong woman who survived and thrived in a male-dominated industry.

Well that's good because other than a Meltzer newsbite, what do you really know about it? What do any of us know about it?

So she had a boyfriend and Edge was married. I understand it's upsetting that they violated their unions but ideally, what would you have them do? In a perfect world where you can control these intangibles and no one ever becomes attracted to anyone that society unrealistically and abitrarily determines they shouldn't, we'd all be happy. But let's take it to the real world. You're married, she has a boyfriend, but you want each other and your life on the road forces you together for hours on end. Is it really that easy to just ignore it indefinitely? Would you not even be tempted?

A lot of people, not just Edge and Lita, do this every day. It doesn't make it right, but it doesn't make them neo-nazis either. If they weren't celebrities people like you and I wouldn't be discussing it. But just because they are celebrities, and we are discussing it, doesn't mean it's any of our business or that it's our place to judge.

You got me. We can sit here and argue that back and forth all day, but you can't deny that she is a fan favourite. She does have a following, and not just in her "old stomping grounds" like Matt. She's a bigger star than he is, so maybe he shouldn't have started this tug-of-war with people far more relevant to the company that he is.

I used to buy twelve (12) PPVs a year. That's $350 a year. I have bought a total of one (1) PPV in the last two years, in large part because the WWE either releases or doesn't give a compelling role for performers like Kanyon and Goldust and Rico and Rhyno and Matt.

Okay, that's only $700 bucks they have thrown away. But how many more fans are like me? A few? Lots? Many, many thousands? $700 x 10,000 fans like me = $7 million over the last two years. $700 x 30,000 fans like me = $21 million over two years. Either number is not unrealistic across North America.

Ouch.
