Wrestlemania XI Moment: Owen Hart/Yokozuna VS The Smoking Gunns

The King of Harts Owen Hart entered Wrestlemania XI with a contract to fight for tag team gold against the Smoking Gunns, with a partner of his choice.

To fuelled is hatred toward his brother Bret, Owen choose Yokozuna, the man who beat Bret for the WWF title at Wrestlemania IX, as his tag partner for the bout.

Owen Hart started the match by arrogantly slapping Billy Gunn across the face. In no time, the move backfired on him and as Owen found himself double-teamed by the Gunns, Yokozuna slowly tried to interfere, without success.

Following a double side Russian leg sweep on Owen, Billy and Bart double dropkicked the mighty Yokozuna out of the ring.

With Yokozuna out of the way, the Smoking Gunns unleashed tag team action on Owen Hart by tagging numerous times during the match. After outwrestling Owen for minutes, the Gunns try to win the match by hitting their finishing manoeuvre, the Sidewinder.

Owen lying on the mat, Billy went for the cover but Yokozuna, who climbed back on the ring apron, distracted the referee and splashed the cowboy to save Owen from the 3-count.

The match continued outside the ring where Owen shoved Billy Gunn back first into the ringside rail and rolled him back into the ring to the mercy of Yokozuna.

Exhausted, Billy tried to take out Yoko with a succession of right hands but one massive chop from the big men send the tag champ crashing to the mat.

With the referee restraining Bart Gunn from entering the ring, Yokozuna lifted up Billy on his feet and restrained him by the arms while Owen climbed on the top rope, and executed a flying dropking.

Using his last bit of strength, Billy moved out of the way and Owen ended up dropkicking Yokozuna hard on the chest.

With both challengers down, Billy finally reached Bart for the hot tag. The fresh Smoking Gunn furiously entered the ring and military press Owen to the mat. The Gunns then joined force to combat Yokozuna, but Bart fell off the ring following a low bridge by Owen, who was standing on the apron.

Billy then tried to attack Yokozuna but found himself flying into the air by a vicious chokeslam. Yokozuna dragged the laying cowboy to one of the ring corners and hit a devastating Bonzai Drop.

Bart charged the sumo wrestlers to save his tag partner but was thrown out of the ring by the two contenders.

Owen Hart then snapped the sharpshooter on a knocked out Billy Gunn to win the first WWF championship of his career.

Owen Hart post-match comments:

"I said all along that I would be a world Wrestling Federation Champion just like my brother Bret, and tonight was the night! The king of Harts is reigning supreme! I will capture the triple crown of wrestling just like my brother Bret did - the only difference being I will do it in style!"

Also on Wrestlemania XI:

The Allied Powers (Lex Luger and Davey Boy Smith) defeated Jacob and Eli Blue.

Intercontinental Title Match: Razor Ramon defeated Jeff Jarrett by disqualification.

The Undertaker pinned King Kong Bundy.

Bret Hart defeated Bob Backlund in an "I Quit" match.

World Heavyweight Title Match: Diesel pinned Shawn Michaels to retain the Heavyweight title.

Lawrence Taylor pinned Bam Bam Bigelow.

Except Owen PINNED Billy. This was a bit of a pickle, as the "WWF Magazine" article announcing the results, which presumably had already been written before the show, said he used the sharpshooter.

So I'm left to wonder if you actually *watched* this match before you wrote.....this. That wouldn't be good journalism, after all...

Stephane, I am now officially making a PUBLIC request that you stop starting threads here, since obviously you ignored my private one.

I want there to be no confusion between you and I (and anyone else reading) that if (when) you try to start ONE more thread on this forum, you will be met with the "I'm sorry, but this isn't working out" ban and asked not to return.

If you don't understand any of this message, I'd be happy to ask one of the other Canadians to translate it into French for you.

I watched the match many years ago and I didn't remember the finish. So I gathered results of the show and there was multiple ending stories for the tag bout.

So I went with the official WWF results.

WWE.com's World Tag Title entry for Yokozuna & Owen's win at WM11:

    OWEN HART & YOKOZUNA
    April 2, 1995 - Sept. 24, 1995

After complaining about how it was unfair that he and Jim Neidhart were ousted in the first round of the World Tag Team Championship Tournament earlier in the year, Owen Hart was granted a shot at The Smokin' Gunns and their titles. The Gunns even said that Hart could pick any partner he wished. That proved to be a problem. Owen wisely seelcted the biggest man he could think of - Yokozuna. After Owen endured a lot of punishment from the Smokin' Gunns, Yokozuna came in and overpowered the champs. A belly-to-belly suplex and Banzai Drop later and Owen Hart and Yokozuna were World Tag Team Champions.

From Slashwrestling at http://slashwrestling.com/guests/conley4.html

Greg Conley's review says the end was;
"Billy makes the tag to Bart and he sends Owen off the ropes and gives him a powerslam. He sends Yokozuna off the ropes and grabs his hair and throws him down. He kicks Owen off the apron and tags out to Billy. They both go off the ropes and Owen pulls down the ropes on Bart and he flies to the outside of the ring and Yokozuna catches Billy in a belly-to-belly suplex and that really looked like it hurt. Yokozuna sets him up in the corner and executes the Banzai Drop and Bart runs into try to save him but he gets dumped out of the ring. Yokozuna takes out to Owen and he sets up for the Sharpshooter but instead just falls down and pins Bart. New Tag Team Champions!"

The tone change was Shawn Michaels becoming The Showstopper, just like Ric Flair was begging him to be. Shawn Michaels is a nice guy, the Showstopper ain't. Simple as that.
