If there's no season, how are they going to decide what order teams pick... I say one way to settle this, borrow the Wheel of Fortune wheel, place one team for each space and give it a spin.

smark/net attack wienerville advisory holds at ORANGE alert - High (JBL is STILL WWE champion and now smarks arch enemy HHH is the World Champion. Major red threat, but the undercard seems okay. The alert holds... for now)- 9/19

I recall reading about a month ago that if there is no season there will be no entry draft.

Yeah, a few weeks ago TSN was talking about them just not having it too. But we still have about a month or so before we have to start worrying about that sort of thing, since they could come out anytime before the 15th or so and still say that there's going to be a season.

Either way, I don't believe anything until Brian Burke tells me there is or isn't a draft. After watching him for the past few months, that man's because my own personal Jesus for hockey news and opinions.

I would agree with that. Brian Burke is the only commentator through this whole mess that I really think knows the situation cold from both sides. Once this is resolved Gary Bettman should be fired and Burke hired as the replacement.

If there is no draft, are the "draft elegible" players then Free Agents, able to sign with any team, and wait until the lock out is over to begin play?

I think that's what was mentioned, but it was a while back, so who knows how good my memory was. I don't think any team can sign anyone until the lockout is over though. I'm not even sure they'd be thinking about it since the CBA doesn't exist anymore, so who knows what they could even pay rookies now, or what kind of cap/tax they're going to have to deal with.

I'm wondering what happens to the trades made in the past where teams gave up this year's draft picks in exchange for someone. In retrospect, those seems like some smart deals.

I'm sure the new CBA will outline a procedure for dealing with this. If I had to guess, I would assume they hold a draft for the '05 eligible kids using the last set of standings once they know they'll have an 05-06 season. Replacement players will take the ice before two seasons are lost, so the '06 draft will likely still take place as it normally would.

As Tribal alluded to, there are teams that have more invested in '05 draft picks than just a bad season. No way the league gets the Washingtons, Pittsburghs, and Carolinas of the world to agree to just let a crop of rookies become free agents.

Not to mention that if the entire rookie crop were free agents, it would work against everything the owners are trying to accomplish with this lockout. It would be immensely inflationary.

I doubt there would be honor among thieves if an owner thinks he can get/sign Sidney Crosby through some lockout loophole... I'd certainly try to find one.

Not just Crosby either. There's a bunch of guys available this upcoming year that will be better than any of the top draft picks that these teams originally traded for. I expect a lot of the owners will be trying to 'postpone' their draft rights because of the lockout (especially if it ends up cancelling the season) until the next full season even just for the shot at trading up.

Here are the Draft Rules:

Players who turn 18 by September 15 can be drafted, but only if they "opt in" by declaring their draft eligibility. Most promising young players choose to opt in, and the highest draft picks are almost always used to select 18-year-olds.

Those who turn 19 by September 15 and are not older than 20 by December 31 are automatically eligible for selection. In addition, non-North American players over the age of 20 are eligible.

A North American player who is not drafted by the age of 20 is an unrestricted free agent. All non-North Americans must be drafted before being signed, regardless of age.

----

If there is no CBA in place, there can't be a draft. If the draft is cancelled, that would mean that all players who are too old to be eligible for the next draft would become Free Agents and be able to play either as replacement players or sign to whatever team they choose.

All the other players would continue to play in Junior and just enter the next draft.

Most likely if the two sides come to some sort of agreement in the Summer, they'd probably fit the Draft in.

Are the draft rules part of the CBA? They could just rewrite them for a one time age change.

Justin had a theory that the winner of last year's lottery would carry over to this year's lottery (and thus, two straight #1 for Pittsburgh + minor leaguers getting plenty of experience + better CBA = Very Good Pengiuns), which was shattered when they lost the lottery. Anyway, we found this article in November to further explain (or not) everything.

Next NHL draft won't be held until new agreement is reached

November 18, 2004

TORONTO (AP) -- There won't be an NHL entry draft before a collective bargaining agreement is reached with the players' association, the director of the league's scouting department said.

The lockout has already wiped out over 240 games, plus the All-Star weekend, and it appears there won't be any NHL hockey before January -- if at all this season. The sides haven't met since Sept. 9 and no negotiations have been scheduled.

If the season goes by the boards, next June's draft -- scheduled for Ottawa -- would be the next major event to be lost. The draft can't be legally held without a collective bargaining agreement.

If the lockout continued into next season and was then settled, Central Scouting director Frank Bonello said there could be two drafts within a few months.

``If there were to be an agreement, say January '06, we would have a draft shortly after that time so that we'd have it prior to June '06 when the next draft is,'' Bonello said. ``In other words, we would be very anxious to get a draft in so we don't miss it if that is the case.''

What would have to be hammered out as part of labor negotiations is the draft order. Normally teams own picks based on the previous season's standings and playoff results. The top picks are then determined by a weighted lottery.

As an aside, Sidney Crosby said on TSN over the weekend that he would probably cross the picket line and play with replacement players if the opportunity came his way. I wouldn't blame any undrafted players for doing this, since the union is more than ready to throw them under the bus in this process anyway.

I wonder what she was thinking wearing a Bertuzzi jersey to the Pepsi Center? Not that I condone getting beer dumped on her, but she had to figure she'd get some abuse. They do it all over again in an hour in Colorado.
