I'm getting conflicting messages here. I can go to one thread and find, "Will you cut this out" (referring to posting about a subject (The W)) and then I come to this thread and am asked why I don't post more.

Heck even in this thread CRZ seems to indicate that he likes it the way it is. (No, I did)

Honestly I don't have time to post more, nor do I really want to post more than a certain number of times in any thread, and be obnoxious (I keep thinking of "A Few Good Men" here with the "I strenously object" line).

But if that weren't the case, I don't think I would post much more than I do anyways because it seems to irritate the other admin. :)

Ugh.

Everyone was meant to be everyone who is currently reading and not posting - the 500 people who read the board all the time but never post.

Those of you who are already posting may already be posting too much. It's keeping others from joining the conversation.

Maybe you guys should run a test to indicate who should post and who shouldn't. Maybe this could be something as simple as highlighting the names or people who don't post enough (in the list of currently logged in w's) and maybe crossing out the names of w's who have posted too much. All you would need is some quota to check against, such as if you've posted 3 times in the last 24 hours, and then we might get an idea.

Heck, maybe when someone logs onto the board, it can see how long its been since their last post, and their average rate of posting, and then a message could pop up telling them either "Hey, why don't you post?" or "Hey, maybe you should lay off and let other people speak?"

I'll stop brainstorming as I type and quit my rambling now...

Didn't CRZ use to list people who "wouldn't shut up" every month? Not that I think it had much affect on anything.

Well, since we're on the subject (kinda)...

I was wondering if there couldn't be a "purge" of inactive users. Look at how many inactive non-posters we have (607 from the Ranks page). They don't post and they don't log-in, so why are they still around? That's one way to get rid of some of the inactives.

Other than that, I'd have to guess that the higher-ranked users who go inactive might just have lost interest in what's discussed on the board, or maybe their interests lie in the direction of what's not discusses. I'm no help in this area.

They already don't count against the "active" total on the index page, so why bother poking holes in our user database*? It looks to ME like you're just scheming to better your odds at being randomly selected as W of the Day!

When the board first opened, I posted a lot, way too often. I think I was the first person to hit "Hawking" on the ranks page. There were three forums I liked posting in: Wrestling, Politics and Football. Then, sometime in 2003, I realized that I posted here way too much and also that I really wasn't all that interested in wrestling anymore. Then, almost every single thread in Politics degenerated into the exact same discussion and was often borderline namecalling, which I wasn't interested in. So I started disappearing for months at a time, only finding my way back to the board because it was in my favorite places on my computer and I would occasionally think "hmmm, I wonder what's going on in Wienerville." If I hadn't bookmarked the page, I probably never would have remembered it.

See, I was guessing that was what you meant, but considering I'm one of the ones who has been here for well over 3 years (heck I didn't post for a year) and I'm just hitting 200... I'm still guessing I'm viewed as one of the ones in the posting too much because of my activity lately.

Edit: Clarifying my point. If you want different (or dissenting) opinion, you can't act like people are stupid for not guessing what you mean or not agreeing with it. Some of the blame may be on the posters, but it's not all our fault for not being able to always guess what you're looking for.

The impression I get right now is this.
1) Please post more*.

*Assuming you're not one of the people we already feel are posting too much, and as long as it's an opinion that will be different than any others posted here, and as long as we don't feel it's stupid.

I can see why some people feel it's a lot safer just to read.

Ok, well, if you really insist....I'll post more.

I have the same story as most...I came here when it basically just a wrestling board, but over time I began to check the sports/TV/Music/politics forums before I get around to wrestling.

Isn't keeping 25% of your posters a pretty high ratio anyways, however? You rarely find a messageboard that is anything more than a few 'regulars.' Most people just casually surf in, register to make a few posts or to flame someone, and then forget about it or go to some other board that catches their fancy. The fact that so many posters have made the W their one-stop shop for posting is pretty impressive, and the level of debate and intelligent argument is (usually) much higher here than on most message boards.

I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? As one of those wacky individuals who didn't log in (yet, did actually sort of come by every few months to read some stuff) for a year or so, and did come back reading shit fairly regularly... it's like this.

Some people just bounce around message boards like little bitches. People like me. But, we tend to bounce back to some boards we used to go to if they's still around, like this one. And sometimes there's some real neato stuff in the boards-that-were-formerly-content-on-the-random-board, and the random board (and every six months or so, I check out the music board... I'm not a big music man, but, like the other boards here, sometimes there's neato peato groovy stuff there).

I bounce between here, slashdot, fark, the Earth: 2025 board (where I've been a mod since... shit, 1999/2000, I've lost track), Zophar's Domain (haven't checked if my account still exists there, and it's a bit of a cesspool... been like two or three years since I posted there), Elazul's Pad (used to be the #1 result for Frogcock in google), and... I think that's it.

I don't like to post unless I actually gots something to say. Which is rarely.

So, where'd they all go? If they're drifter kinda chaps, they've probably forgotten their passwords, and are too lazy (or don't like to add to user clutter) to register for a new account even if they do still read shit here.

And the wrestling board is about as predictable as... Generic Action Movie #9... Or, Days of Our Lives. Seriously, ever watch that show? Once upon a time, I did, and then I went a year without watching it and about two days had passed within the show's world or something. Or maybe it was two weeks. It takes place in some kind of bizarro world where children age incredibly rapidly compared to how fast people figure out if the person they're boinking is really the father of their child or not... or even if they want them to be. It's almost as predictable as Slashdot :/

I can explain where Brokenwings went.

As a newbie here it was tough love at first, but I think it helped me fit in more than I have any where else. I know I still get on the Mods nerves, especially Guru Zim, but all decisions have been fair.

I think to make the board appeal to more people add a few more categories to write in. Off the top of may head I would say put in categories that CRZ would not approve of in regular forums.

Other forums allow for a lot more freedom in the Random category than allowed here, and that may appeal to people. I am happy here the way it is, but this is a reason I think alot of people quit the W.

How much more freedom do you need to be random than the not-so-vaguely titled Random category?

The most esoteric quote I've ever heard has to apply to The W.

"The higher, the fewer." (Yeah, I know I got it there, so nyahhh to you too)

The higher quality posts/threads/people, the fewer posters there will be. This place doesn't sit well with the "average" message boarder, but if you want a look at "average," head on to the gamefaqs board. Chaos.

Yes it would be nice to have about 25% more active, regular, posters but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I'm a longtime lurker, but a rare poster. For a "sweeps" stunt, how about locking out the regulars from posting for a couple of days, and post a mandatory-read announcement encouraging the lurkers to open up a bit?

A well-written announcement explaining the reasoning might encourage dialogue, while hopefully not alienating the, ahem, W "all stars."

*recognizing the irony of posting in this thread*

What if you reset everyone's post counts so that there wasn't a sense of "oh, this person must know what they're talking about, they have 600 million posts."

Or if you want to be draconian, allow only a certain number of posts or thread starts per day/week/month? Make people really decide if they need to post that 7th thread of the day simply to tweak 5 members of the board.

That or start giving away lovely tote bags to people who increase their posting. No one can resist a tote bag.

Just to chime in, I kind of got the message from on high that I was posting too much and so I am, as a rule, not posting anymore, especially in Politics/Current events.

I thought that was a better solution than having petty words over other, often petty, words.

So I am reading and very rarely, posting.

Before I started posting here, I couldn't help to notice that a lot of people on here weren't liked all that much, but they still kept posting away, quite like some of us now, I suppose. There's a good chance that with any new post you put up, you'll get mocked for your ignorance and banned or something. Now I don't go posting at any other boards anymore, but I don't remember having the board owners going around calling their posters morons all that much or telling some to shut up and go away all that often.

Also, it's certainly getting better around here with the different forums now, but before, I certainly remember being told how messages about comic books or soccer were not wanted around here. How did you expect to get new people around here when all you want them to talk about is the same stuff all the time? Again, this has gotten tons better here lately.

Lastly, maybe we can be a little more tolerant towards the new people and let the stupidity slide for a while. Sure, still say don't do this and that, but let them try to figure it out on their own at first BEFORE telling them to shut up and go away.

...just a few thoughts and ideas.

Oh yeah... and perhaps the Banished forum isn't that great of an idea. There's nothing like letting new people know that we know how to make fun of stupid people so obviously. Why not simply delete the offending posts or threads and give the user a warning in PM?

I couldn't disagree more. The Internet empowers idiots to communicate to a mass audience -- an audience that includes me. I don't want to read some moron's unfunny one-liner in the middle of a grown-up conversation. The W is the adult table. Everyone else can sit at one of the many kiddie table boards the Internet offers.

The fact that mods here go out of their way to keep a high signal-to-noise ratio is the whole reason I keep coming here, despite having lost interest in wrestling long ago. Loosening standards so CRZ doesn't hurt the feelings of a mongoloid will not improve the board.

Actually, that would be a good idea. Maybe title the folder Other Sports. Then we would not have to post it under the Random folder.
