As the case with most Cd's, Eminem allegedly last album is already out in Japan for the ball socking price of 38 bucks. Here is my opinion down and dirty. We will use the 5.0 scale of excellence.

1. Curtains Up (Same curtain intro from The Eminem Show)

2. Evil Deeds (4.5 Wicked Dre beat, his word play is insane. I like how he acknowledges that no matter how much he raps about how bad his life is, he is rich now and nobody cares)

3. Never Enough (4.0 the beat is OK I love the hook and 50 brings it but it is too short. Would have been a 4.5 or a 5.0 with 2 more verses)

4. Yellow Brick Road (3.5 iffy beat decent wordplay of course where Em takes you back when he was a dumb kid who once recorded a tape where he says the N word and this is his big apology.)

5. Like Toy Soldiers (5.0 Sick track. He addresses all his beefs)

6. Mosh (4.5 Maybe Bush winning will bring out the best in people's angst. Its weird that its slow beat and cadence actually makes me want to actually get politically hype like Rage Against Machine use to. Either you love the track or you hate it since it is everywhere now)

7. Puke (2.5 By far the weakest track where he verbally dices his ex wife Kim again. The intro where he is literally puking in the toilet is nauseating to hear)

8. My 1st Single (5.0 Eminem at his best. The beat is intense but I can tell it can turn a lot of people off.)

9. Paul (skit)

10. Rain Man (3.5 Standard joker track where Em tries to make you laugh and he kills it but the beat sounds like something Em has done 10 times already. And it will defiantly piss off people with the Christopher Reeves remarks. I know he made this long before he died, and I am one that never shies from controversy, but this track would have been better off cut. And he could have added one of the songs from the bonus disc.)

11. Big Weenie (3.5 beat is average. Basically a big F-U to Benzino and crew)

12. Em Calls Paul (skit) (Em does his best Ned from South Park imitation and pokes some more fun at MJ)

13. Just Lose It (4.0 By now people may be sick of this track and yes it is the same old Em first single clown track, but I won't lie, it grows on you.)

14. Ass Like That (4.0 Em does a over the top Middle Eastern accent against a nice Indian themed track. It sounds surprisingly good and is one of the funniest tracks I've heard from Eminem.)

15. Spend Some Time (5.0 Em's version of 21 Questions and Smile. And with Obie and 50 it really works. The best beats on the album. And for once 50 steps his game up and keeps up with Em.)

16. Mockingbird (5.0 another ode to Hailey but this time he pretty much apologizes to his daughter for their unstable life and absent of her mom. If you have a soul you can't help but be taken in because his lyrics are so real and come straight from the heart.)

17. Crazy In Love (4.5 a more rock like track that works much better then anything he did in his last album. This is a song about how the P can make a man do crazy things. He could be talking about Kim in which case it kind of hurts the previous song)

18. One Shot 2 Shot (3.5 The obvious D-12 track which is thankfully the only one. Which makes sense since they already had a album out this year. It sounds like something that could have been on the Marshall Mather's LP. Weak beat and same old same old hook makes this track skip-able.

19. Final Thought (skit)

20. Encore/Curtains Down (5.0 Dre returns to tag team on the last track. And the beat is bananas! It makes me long for that now dead Detox album. A good way to close out the album, yet the ending did give me pause.)

Final Score 8.5
His production is getting better. But the only thing that is stopping this from being his classic he so wants is his production, which is hit or miss. And some songs are just more of the same old Marshall we have seen for 5 years now. A lot more Dre behind the board could have went a long way to making this his "Illmatic". If this is his last album (which I don't believe) it will be a shame because I don't think he has peaked yet. His wordplay and breath control is amazing. I hope he releases another album with just good producers, no MTV singles, no jokes, just straight fire. One of the better albums of the year. And don't let anyone tell you differently. The bonus disc has 3 tracks which are all available online and on mixtapes. But they are good. He actually gives us nearly 80 minutes of music so I can't include them with the actually album.

This has been the album I've been waiting for all year. Thanks for the heads up, Seven.

If this IS the last from Dre, it's been a good career and the end of an era.

It's Em's last album, not Dre's. I assume that was a typo. No biggie.

I'm looking somewhat forward to it...from the couple tracks I've heard ("Mosh" and "Yellow Brick Road") that weren't an attempt to get that one 'funny' hit out, it seems like he's a lot more mature in his deliver and content. If I'm not mistaken, I believe "Mosh" is the first truly political track he's done. Before, if he did attack a public official, it dealt specifically with censorship and/or a direct attack made on him.

Say what you want about his homophobic and masogynistic tendencies at times...the guy's got it.

Nice review, SeVen.

Actually I feel almost the complete opposite about the beats. I've only given it a couple listen throughs, so I won't comment about all of the lyrics just yet. But I really feel that the beats (including the Dre ones) are really poppish and quote un-quote "typical" hip hop beats (or in the case of 'Lose It', crappy). Sure it's not as bad as the Little John shit coming out, but one of Em's defining characteristics was always the unique beats he flowed over (see: 'Marshall Mather's LP' & 'The Eminem Show').

Also, I think that the "Straight From The Lab EP" and the first two discs of the DJ Green Lantern mixtapes addressed his feuds much more effectively and powerfully. He's almost falling into that 50 Cent rut of just going over the same topic again and again. The lyrical content just isn't there like it used to be either. Sure his first singles out are always TRL fodder, but at least he was saying something in them (i.e. 'The Real Slim Shady'). With "Lose It" he doesn't really say.. well, anything. The best "middle-eastern accent" song that ever came out of the Shady camp hands down has got to be D12's "Area Stores." (It's online somewhere.) And as far as being political goes, he's gone into it a bit, although not as directly, on "White America" and "Square Dance" from 'The Eminem Show'. Or even better, "We As Americans" which is probably the precursor as well as superior to "Mosh".

And everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but to me "Encore/Curtain's Down" is clubbish garbage with really weak wordplay and a crappy ass chorus. IMO I think that "Say What You Say" is the best Dre/Em collaboration, with "Forgot About Dre" a close second.

If this is his last album it's about as crappy an effort as 'The Black Album'. Then again, Jay-Z signed a one-album contract to (ironically enough) Aftermath records to release an album under his real name of Sean Carter. (So *technically* The Black Album was Jay-Z the persona's last album, but not Sean's.) If this so-called S.Carter album is in the same vein as 'Reasonable Doubt' then I guess I can excuse the whole Black Album = last album bullsh!t he pulled.

And as a side note, the Jin album "The Rest Is History" is a decent album. The first half is commercial garbage, but the second is definitely awesome stuff. "Love Story", "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly", and "Same Cry" are worth at least a download.

I think Forget About Dre is the best, it also has the best hook I have ever heard. Em has never really put down weak lyrics. And when he is off it is usually better then the average rapper. Aftermath has a formula that works for them. The TRL song, the street mixtape song, the party song, the love song. And it works. You have to change it up these days. But like I said above I would love to see a undergroundish set of material from Eminem. With beats by Dre, Premo, Kayne etc...

I am surprised you like Jin better. I was really disappointed with it. He fell right into that Canibus curse, of battle rappers who can't make a complete album. But I did like a few songs, and there was a few times I did a doubletake because I thought Eminem was on a verse but it was just Jin

I still want to see a proper Bad Meets Evil album, if he finally squashed everything with Royce.

Game stated that there WILL be a Detox album. Dre scrapped plans after wanting to focus on his label artists, but after working on Game's album (which will drop in January), he decided he has to go out the proper way.

Unfortunately, Detox NEEDS Snoop for it to be considered a classic. People always say Snoop needs Dre but I think it goes the other way as well.

Really good review. Some of the tracks I can see going either way for people because of the comedy. One difference of opinion I had was on the Rain Man track, I don't think he was making fun of Christopher Reeve at all. I took it as him poking fun at his right-wing critics. Listen to it again with that in mind, and see if I'm off base or not.

There's so much varied taste in hip-hop, though. I mean, I thought Jay-Z's Black Album was his most listenable album since his first one. I couldn't stand all the albums in between with songs like 'Big Pimpin'' and 'H.O.V.A'. To each their own.

As far as recommendations go, I recommend the new 'Violent By Design' album from Jedi Mind Tricks. Partially for all the wrestling content, partially for the movie liners, and partially for the GZA track. I don't agree with almost anything they rap about but it all sounds good.

And I agree that Detox needs to be made and it needs Snoop.

I'm still undecided about Game because on one hand the mixtape tracks I've heard him on are pretty mean ("Count On Me", "I Got A Mil On It", "Where I'm From", "We Don't Play No Games", "Westside Story"), and yet he goes and *starts* feuds with Joe Budden and Yukmouth who both responded with (surprisingly) killer tracks. But after they responded and ripped him, he doesn't have a track in response, and while that doesn't necessarily mean he's a bad rapper, it's really weak on his part.

As far as Jin goes, I don't think he'll fall into the same rut as Canibus. I think part of Canibus' problem is that "C! Hollywood Stories" SUCKED. I think www.alljin.com has one or two copies of his mixtapes online the best of which I think is "The Definition of History." Addmittedly though, there are a couple crappy tracks.

And the current rumor is that SUPPOSEDLY the 'Encore' album that leaked to the internet (the one I heard) is full of fake/crappy tracks in order to throw off all the bootleggers (which would explain our drastically contrasting opinions.) I kind of doubt it, but we'll see.

And finally don't get the wrong impression, IMO "Big Pimpin", "H.O.V.A.", "Change Clothes", etc. are garbage. In that regard I feel "Reasonable Doubt" and "Blueprint 2.1" are his best albums.

Abso-friggin'-lutely. Downloaded "I Got A Million On It" and "Game Over", and Yukmouth completely embarrassed the Game. Might as well have been a first-round knockout... although who the hell bothers starting beef with Joe Budden?

Game posts frequently on the messageboard on his site. It's pretty funny watching him get into fights with posters.

Game got the last laugh in the Yukmouth beef by pulling a SWERVE. They supposedly "squashed" their beef and recorded a track together, but Game's verse has him dissing Yuk's crew.

I think this album is horrible. Just Lose It is so annoying it has completely numbed my ability to be annoyed by anything else. I swear, Urkel's voice is sunshine compared to this track. Ass Like That is almost as bad, and he attacks Triumph. A fucking puppet. God, must he get back at everyone who ever makes a passing comment against him? There's a song, I forget which, goin' into all the shit with Ja, and there's another one about his peepee where he asks Gwen Stefani to pee on him, don't know if that's the same one. Both awful.

It's a mess. The last album, I was thinking: "Man, like him or not this man has it." This one makes me think he's lost it, and if it's his final one I guess it's "not with a bang, but a whisper."

And whats up with it coming out 4 days early, was it already getting bootlegged?

At this rate, people shouldnt even bother announcing their release dates ahead of time anymore, just put them out when they're done, THEN tell everybody that it's out.

Damn.

A couple of notes:

I just bought the album today (because I'm a diehard never-download-an-Eminem-album kinda guy), but man-oh-man, this album has been pirated like you wouldn't believe. I did a little search on packetnews the other day, and while Lil' Jon's new album "Crunk Juice" was in pretty heavy rotation on IRC, "Encore" came up with 5 times as many matches. Geez.

I haven't listened to the album all the way through even once yet, but I had to say to SeVen, don't you think that "Never Enough" is so short on purpose? I mean, the song is about how no matter what Em does, people say that it's never enough from him and they want more. I thought it was kind of clever.

I may pick this up. I have the first two albums he put out, but I wasn't going to get this until I checked out the samples.

I have the last two Eminem albums, and I WAS looking forward to this one. Then they released Just Lose It and I went on the fence. Then on Philly hip/hop stations, they were playing other cuts. I quickly found out that I didn't like any of them. Ass Like That is a stupid song and other songs didn't jump out at me.

Actually, the one song I liked, Like Toy Soldiers, was only great because I love the 80's song that Em used in the song.

Overall--I'm not buying this album.

SCARLET: Oh, come on, you don't think I'm gonna fall for that old trick?
WADSWORTH: It's not a trick. There was one shot at Mr. Boddy in the study. Two for the chandelier, two at the lounge door, and one for the singing telegram.
SCARLET:That's not six.
WADSWORTH: One plus two plus two plus one.
SCARLET:Nuh, uh. There was only one shot that got the chandelier. That's one plus two plus ONE plus one.
WADSWORTH: Even if you are right, that would be one plus one plus two plus one, not one plus TWO plus one plus one.
SCARLET:(thinking) Okay, fine. One plus two plus one--(angered) Shut up!

I got it early because I know somebody who works at an unnamed music store and they had them in the back for the past week and a half. They didn't put them out on the shelves until today, though.

He said that they usually have to send stuff a little earlier to Canadian stores just in case there are any border delays. Makes sense but he could have just been talking out of his ass.

I truely feel sorry for anybody that likes this album because they are clueless and will eat up any nonsense eminem presents them with. Slim Shady Lp was great, Marshall Mathers LP was a classic, Eminem show was good but this is straight garbage from beginning to end. There is not one redeeming factor to this album. Eminem is a slothful and avaricious bastard for putting this out. He does not care about his fans and only wants their money. Ironic that he has become what he previously claimed to have stood against.

Well that's a bit harsh.

Granted, I haven't heard more than 30 second clips yet, but it seems OK to me. You can get a feel for the beats with the iTunes clips and it doesn't sound that bad.

What is it specifically that you don't like - the beats, the lyrics, the subject matter?

I just got it last night (Some people still buy Cd's right?) and I was really disappointed. First off I don't know why but I expected some growth from Eminem. The things he picks to rap about are not even topical any more like R Kelly, Christopher Reeves and Britney and Justin. To make that worst he then goes back to two more of his old crutches: His wife (who gets two tracks about her Crazy In Love and Mockingbird) and I just feel like I have heard everything already before. The second of his old crutches is the gay bashing. Now I'm not a homosexual nor am I offended by what he raps about but in the song Rain Man the whole second verse is dedicated towards it just reeks of a "Hey look at me" track. Seven you said that Spend some time was like his 21 questions, were you serious? It just sounds like a bunch of angry guys bitching about the girls they lost. Any song with the lyric "I never would have thought I would see you out of control even though my penis was deep down in your hole.." Have you ever listened to Smile? Its a nice popish track. Spend some time comes off very dark and sad.

With all that said I still really enjoyed a few tracks. I really liked Like Toy Soldiers, Encore, Never Enough, Yellow Brick Road, Mosh, Big Weenie and Evil Deeds. If it wasn't for the fact that I have been looking forward to this Cd forever 7 songs that I really like would be just fine but this is supposed to be his last album. As a fan of Eminem I am embarrassed that this was all he came up with. Instead of the rebirth of Slim Shady it seems as if he has been placed in the microwave.
