Great game between Indy and the Pats. Came down to the very end! Hope all the games are this good this season. WTF was with James at the end of the game, seemed like he was tired and didnt give a crap. Congrats to the Pats on a great game.

Three red zone turnovers...two fumbles by James, one INT by Manning. Also, that inexplicable last offensive play when they decided that Willie McGinest should be left totally untouched. And of course Manning is looking in the entirely opposite direction and gets easily sacked due to his concrete feet. Pretty weak, Indy. They could've easily won this game and blew it. Brandon Stokley looked like the man out there, however.

As for the Patriots, they lucked out a bit this week. Brady looked phenomenal aside from that one bad INT, and Dillon was running pretty well.

Well, right before that last sack, Manning called an audible, and moved James over to his left, leaving his right side wide open. James had nobody to block, and, nobody blocked the McGuinest. End of game.

Excellent evening from start to finish. I caught the last part of the pregame festivities and got pumped up at the national anthem. The game lived up to the hype, and I was impressed that, some defensive tackling aside, neither team appeared to show much of the "first game rust" I'm used to seeing. Major congrats to the Pats as well - that goal-line stand was beautiful.

Credit to the Colts for going for the win I guess, but how fricking difficult is it to NOT lose 12 yards on one play?

Both D's looked pretty average, which if it continues would probably be more of a concern for the Pats than for the Colts. Tough break for the Colts having tofollow up this loss with a trip to the Titans and then hosting Green Bay. Starting 0-3 isn't outwith the realms of possibility

Great game though, and damnit football seasons started.

Did anyone think Marvin Harrison developed a little more of an attitude over the summer? It looked as though he was asking for a pass interference or holding call on nearly every ball thrown his way.

Either way, great game. I guess Manning can go back to calling Vanderjagt "our idiot kicker", though Peyton is a tad culpable as well. Just glad to see former UofM boy Tom Brady, poised as ever.

It was a great game. The run Def scares me a bit. If they can get someone to 2 gap well the Pats might have to go back to the 4-3. Ty Law not playing the whole game hurt the pats big time. He simple OWNS Manning.

Me too. I have them in my week one pool, and I had a night class and taped the game. I saw it this morning and man, every other run was for 7+ yards or was just shut down completely.

Yeah, Mannin took a big loss on that sack, but I THINK that the kick would have been bad 10+ closer and hit the upright. That kick had a BAD hook to it.

Harrison must have had some of the Manning Kool-Aid that and believes they got "cheated" out of the AFC Title Game back in January. He spent all off-season whining about it and that appears to be part of their offense so far this year.

Apparently, more Indy players are drinking the Manning Kool-Aid.....but first this little blurb about "the idiot kicker" from this story:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1878509

FOXBORO, Mass. -- So confident was Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt that he would make a tying, 48-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining in Thursday night's league opener against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium -- and why wouldn't he be; he had only connected on a league-record 42 in a row -- that he turned toward the Patriots' sideline before setting up for the kick and rubbed a few of his fingers together.

For those who don't speak sign language, that's universal for "money."

Then he makes this comment after the end of the game (from Simmons column):

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/cowbell/040910

Well, he missed. Now THAT is comedy. Nothing like a trash-talking field goal kicker not being able to back it up. And then he gave us this beauty: "It sucks. I wanted to make it to help Edge out, I wanted to make it to help Peyton out, I wanted to make it so we could win this game. They're clearly not a better team than us. We needed a three-pointer to win the game, but 48 [yards is] no gimmie."

(Note to Mike: Umm, until you beat the Patriots, and until your QB stops choking in big spots, they're "clearly" a better team than you. This is how sports works. If somebody keeps beating you, that makes them better. This is why we keep score. But please, keep saying stuff like this, because these are the things that make it impossible for the Patriots to lose any semblance of motivation during a 16-game winning streak that stretches over two years.)

Yeah, the Colts fucked it up. And Mike Vanderjagt is an enormous douchebag, at least when it comes to opening his damn mouth. But I'll still take him over any other field-goal kicker in the league.

And dammit, the Colts were robbed out of a win in the AFC Title game, and the reason you know that is because the NFL's decided, belatedly, to start cracking down on pass interference and holding calls. I, for one, wish they would've called the damn things as they were happening, instead of admitting later, “Oops, we screwed up, sorry about your luck.”

On the other hand, the Pacers beating the Knicks in the '95 Eastern Conference semifinals wouldn't have been nearly as sweet if they hadn't been the albatross around our necks the previous couple of years. The Patriots are that team for the Colts, and if we're able to overcome them eventually, it's gonna be a huge deal.

I'm sorry, I must have forgotten; how many Super Bowls has Vanderjagt won with field goals at the last second?

And how many chances has he had to do so?

Vinatieri's ability to handle pressure is great but his stats aren't even close to making him the best in the league. He's had one really good year in 2002 but other than that he's just above average.

Last year he went a whopping 9 for 17 with atempts over 30 yards. He missed two gimme's in the Superbowl that would have meant he probably would never have had to worry about making that last second effort. It was only thanks to some horrible clock management and a squiffy kick-off that he got a chance to make some sort of amends.

It might be the last second field goals made and missed that grab the headlines, but they're all worth 3 at the end of the day.

For all that the man's in my fantasy team though, so I hope he proves me wrong this year ;)

Ok, you can have him and I'll take Vinatieri. I'm sure many others would make that choice too.

LOL. Seems their fans are drinking the "Manning Kool-Aid" too. As for the cracking down, it's not so much enforcing and old rule as it is a new rule. But anyway, funny you bring up the Pacers/Knicks games in the mid-90's. The Knicks were known as a very physical team. From what I remember, the Pacers didn't whine and cry about their style of play. Much like the Bulls vs Pistons games a few years before that, they just went out and played and eventually beat them. No whining and crying about "their beating on us, they play too hard" or something to that affect.

My point is, the Colts should just shut up and play. All of their whining is, like Simmons said, is just going to keep the Pats motivated to beat them every single time.
