Kevin Smith plans Clerks sequel (seattlepi.nwsource.com)
Clerks 2 is on! (joblo.com)

This just made my day. I wonder if it'll be in black & white.

edit: I realize now that Jersey Girl's failure must have made Smith gun-shy. First he drops out of directing the big-budget Green Hornet, now he's going back to the old View Askew characters. Meh, I'll still see it.

Wasn't Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back supposed to be the swan song for the View Askew universe and its characters?

I dunno, a Clerks sequel just seems kind of pointless to me. Smith has obviously lost his confidence as a filmmaker b/c of Jersey Girl's poor performance, so he's not going to challenge himself as a filmmaker anymore.

Maybe he should stop making movies and actually finish those fucking Daredevil and Spider-man miniseries he started.

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA. WHOA. WHOA.

WHOA.

Kevin Smith has just jumped the shark.

The entire concept of the View Askewniverse was that it was 3 movies (Clerks, Mallrats & Chasing Amy). Dogma was added. Clerks 2: Hardly Clerkin' became Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. Going back to something that was finished so well is like bringing back the nWo 3 years after they're relevent: a bad idea.

I don't know, but Smith says he was inspired to do the sequel by working on the original for the anniversary. Now, sequels are always a risky proposition, and they usually aren't as good as the first one, but if there's some legitimate inspiration behind the creation of this one, I'm willing to give it a shot.

I'd rather just see more Clerks cartoons.

I'm not sure you can say he's really jumping the shark here. He had planned to make an animated Clerks movie anyway, so basically all he is doing now is not animating it. The plus side for him is it will probably cost less now.

Eh. I like Kevin Smith's movies, but I think it's best to just leave them alone now. Actually, I think he should of ended with Dogma. Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back just seemed rather pointless to me.

Actually, Dogma came before Chasing Amy & Mallrats. Check the Clerks credits.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

He wrote Dogma, then made Clerks. Then he got offered a ton of money and made Mallrats. Then he went back to basics and made Chasing Amy. Then he finally had (in his words) the skill to do Dogma properly, and did. Then came J&SBSB.

Sorry guys, he "jumped the shark" long before what some of you are suggesting - he hasn't done anything solid since Dogma. J&SB Strike Back is a terrible movie unless you're a fan - and I AM a fan, and it's still not worth seeing more than once or twice. It's a movie based on in-jokes, and Jay and Silent Bob don't work as main characters. The whole reason they were good in the previous films is because they weren't the focus, they were just background characters that came in handy for a dick joke or some crude comment once in a while. Jersey Girl was just...weak. It appears that he's finally realizing his limitations if he is indeed making a Clerks 2. Hopefully it won't disappoint.

As someone above said, he always planned on making a Clerks movie again, but animated. I'd rather see a live action one than an animated one, so this works for me.

Am I the only one who actually liked Jersey Girl? I thought it was a great movie and that Kevin Smith took heat for it because it had benifer in it. I know it wasn't his typical movie but it was one of the best romantic comedies of the past few years. As far as Clerks 2 I know hes going to go all out and make sure its a good movie so I'm not really worried.

As far as him saying he was finished with the View Askewniverse, I have a feeling one of the major contributing factors to that was the fact that Jason Mewes was having a LOT of legal trouble (mostly heroin) at that point, and it wasn't looking good.

What's your definition of a "ton of money?" Mallrats only cost $6.1 million to make. That's peanuts in Hollywood.

What exactly are some of Jason Mewes drug problems that I keep seeing? Has he gone in rehab? I recently saw him on the I love the 90's show along with Smith.

Mewes has been in rehab, I remember him being there during the press junket for Jersey Girl.

Mewes is out of rehab and clean, according to Smith's website. Mewes also lives with Kevin Smith and his family.

And yes 6.1 million for Mallrats was a huge budget, considering he made Clerks for 28k.

No, I thought Jersey GIrl was a good movie too. I mean, he wasnt TRYING to make some big hilarious hollywood movie. IT was a simple story and had a lot of heart. It just got ate up by all the Bennifer Hype. (and yes, I too clapped when she died)

Anyhow, the only, ONLY way to do Clerks 2 properly is to write it, make it as quick witted as the original, and film it in less than 30 days. Anything more is going to make it too hollywood, to forced. Return to what worked for you Kevin Smith, and by all that is holy, make Jay a scumbag, and stop fucking smirking at every funny line. You are SILENT Bob, that should also include "NO FACIAL EXPRESSIONS" Bob.

Yea they aired like a weeks worth a few months ago. It was in the papers and TV Guide I think, I guess you missed it. Seemed like a big deal but it really just comes across as just another talk show.
