Not good. I dont like it. Especially when I read today that Kawshen's rat bastard Knicks are going after Golden State's Eric Dampier, who I was hoping would come to L.A.

In other news, ESPN.com is reporting that Vlade called the Lakers today telling them that he wants to come here, and ESPNradio here in L.A. *JUST* (as I was typing this) said that Karl Malone is pushing/asking/hoping that the Lakers pick him up too (Which would also suggest that Karl plans to come back next year, unless he only wants Vlade to become a Laker as a way to SABOTAGE US ).

Meanwhile, that Sac Bee article you linked to above implies that the Lakers have actually already made an offer to Vlade, which I hadnt heard about anywhere else before.

Chad Ford said the Lakers have offered Vlade their full mid-level exception ($4.9 million per) and the Kings had only offered half of theirs.

Huh? So how do they expect to resign Karl Malone then? He said himself the $1M thing was a one-time thing.

Karl's going to be a Spur, 's what I hear. They say it's between LA, Miami, and San Antonio in th ESPN article, and a guy from Sportsline (I think) was on the radio here the other day and said Mailman to the Spurs was pretty much a done deal.

Wow...if that's true, look out for the Spurs. The crew they had last season was damn good. Add Malone and Barry as role players to that squad...pretty damn tough.

As much as I dislike Malone, I think he'd be great for Miami, and he'd get the shots that he needs to break the scoring record. That said, if he really does sign with the Spurs, they've got to be considered the front runners in the West, if they're not already.

What is Vlade going to be able to bring 20 minutes a game, maybe? Can he even play a full season? The Lakers better find some tough scrappy dogs out there that just like to mix it up, throw down a dunk or two a game and play D or they are going to one of the least physical teams on the schedule.

I love Vlade, but if the numbers are accurate the Kings are offering him what he's worth, and the Lakers are fools, and Vlade will probably take the money, and I can't blame him.

Dampier is also talking to Atlanta. A sign-and-trade with the Knicks would get Dampier around $9.5M to start next year. However, Atlanta has enough cap room to offer him the max.

As for how he does next year (with either team) it depends which Dampier you are getting; the guy who did well last year (but he was in a contract year) vs. the last 2 years previous where he mailed it in most of the time.

latimes.com says that the Lakers have in fact agreed to terms with Vlade Divac for reportedly $10.3 million over 2 seasons, the second at his option.

My hate for Vlade aside, I agree with CRZ (mostly because I'm afraid not to) that he's prolly not worth that much. However, the Lakers *are* in a period of rebuilding here, so if that means starting Brian Grant at center & having Vlade come off the bench for him (which is the way I think it should go unless we get Dampier, in which case I would start Dampier at center, have Vlade come off the bench behind him, then have Grant start at PF) for a couple of years until they can get/afford a REAL center, I can live with it.

Malone is not ready to commit to next season. So, rather than hold up the Lakers, who need depth at center, power forward and point guard, Malone allowed them to sign Divac and maintain the possibility he would return.

"He told them if they could get Vlade for the mid-level, they should do that," Malone's agent, Dwight Manley, said.

LOL

//EDIT: I added the "the second at his option" part at the top refering to Vlade's 2-year contract with the Lakers.

Also, since I've posted this, latimes.com pulled the original story off their site, replaced it with a generic AP story (the kind of thing you'd see on CNN.com when they report on sports) that totally glossed over most of the details the original story had, then that story vanished & the original came back!

I blame Kobe for all of this.

Is it true that Vlade spends his off season training Germany's World Cup Soccer teams how to take a dive?

Looks like that won't be happening.

(WARNING: THe following excerpt contains some truly mind-blowing contract figures. Remember, kids, bang your head against the FLAT surface of your desk, NOT the corner.)

From Chad Ford @ espn.com:

The Knicks are offering Dampier a starting salary of nine million per in a sign-and-trade that would send Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington (who is in the last year of his contract) to Golden State. That works out to a six-year, $71 million deal for Dampier assuming he gets the max $12.5 percent raises. According to several reports in the New York area, Dampier's agent, Dan Fegan, is trying to get the Knicks to pick up a seventh year. Assuming the same raises, that would make his number in year seven $16.38 million -- when he's 37 years old. $87 million for Dampier? You've got to love Isiah.

There's a pretty major hitch in the seven-year scenario, however. If Dampier, who's 30 right now, gets a seventh year, the "over 36" rule is evoked. The rule basically says that, for cap purposes, the year or years of a long-term contract that extend beyond a player's 36th birthday are considered unlikely.

In other words, it's unlikely the player will be playing at age 37. To discourage teams from giving players what essentially amount to "golden parachutes," the over 36 rule states, in this particular case, that Dampier's seventh-year salary ($16.38 million) must be averaged over the course of the first six years for cap purposes. That means that as far as sign-and-trades and the cap goes, you've got to add $2.73 million to each of the first six years of Damp's contract. That puts his first-year starting salary at a whopping $11.73 million. It also means that the trade of Mohammed and Harrington for Dampier wouldn't work without the Knicks putting another salary into the deal.

Can UCLA PLEASE hire a real head coach?! I've seen the clip about 5 times with Matt Barnes saying "if we come to play we can beat any team." Well, a REAL head coach would have them coming to play every night.
