Just two thoughts on Game 7: 1, the refs were absolutely right to call the penalty with 1:20 or so left in the game.
I don't see how they decided it was a charging penalty. The puck was in St. Louis's skates, so it looked like a clean hit to me. Maybe the stick got him (couldn't tell in the replays), but it certainly didn't look like a charging penalty.
Too bad for Calgary. They played as hard as any team I've seen in the last 10 years and came up a little short. On the bright side, I believe they're one of the youngest squads in the league. And Iginla is officially a monster.
Props to Tampa Bay for hanging in there, too. After being able to "coast" more than any other team through the first three rounds (coast being a very relative term), I wondered how they'd handle the adversity of being down a game and on the brink. Obviously that team's got the heart to go with the talent.
As for the "goal" in game 6, did the puck completely cross the line? It sure looked like it did. But it wasn't definitive. And the NHL has always, in my mind, tended to rule against close ones rather than for them. The puck was rolling, it was off a skate, and the referee was not in a good position to even see whether the goal was close, so he wouldn't have had a reason to ask for clarification. One might wonder why the upstairs officials didn't call down, but I don't think it was as cut-and-dried as fans might wish it were.

Originally posted by X-FactorYeah the goal where you can clearly see white ice and they didnt call it in Game 6. I only saw the replays because I was working the night of Game 6. With video replay that is unacceptable and the Flames were screwed! Also Frazer loves screwing the Canadian teams! The Leafs of 93 with the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour no call and now this. Frazer is pathitic!
Fraser is no doubt Satan in hairspray. He is the worst ref bar none in the NHL. It's a consistent bad thing with him pre-93, post-93 and even today... What on earth gave this a-hole the right to referee a Game 7 shows how screwed up the NHL is or even more so that they really have no care in the world about their credibility as a league

It is so awesome to have the Stanley Cup here in Tampa. I just want to thank Calgary for taking care of Detroit earlier in the playoffs so we didn't have to play them in the finals. Just to show there's no hard feelings Flames fans, I like you guys way more than Flyers fans (not that that's saying much) here's something funny.
It seems that the Tampa Tribune posted the wrong editorial this morning. They had one for a loss and one for a win and they put in the wrong article. They must've been drunk as hell. I get the St. Pete Times, which is a much better paper btw, and they had a great section covering the whole thing.
I don't think Fraser screws Canadian teams, I think he's genuinely a bad official. It seems that there is some sort of officiating controversy in his games more often than not. Damn the union for the league having basically no option but to use him. And no, I'm not a Flames fan.
Regardless of which team you were cheering for, I think the thing that stands out the most about this series is that it was geuinely good hockey for seven games. We've had one (2001) good final in the last ten years. One. Is it really any reason that TV ratings suck and the league makes relatively no money from the sale of the rights? Now we just need a couple more years with Finals like this and things will turn around.
I couldn't care less that Dave Andreychuk won a Stanley Cup. The Lightning, though, deserved to win, no question about it. Two game sevens in the final two rounds and they deserved to win both of them. Everybody on that team showed up and contributed what you should have expected, and in some cases - Ruslan Fedotenko, this means you - played over their heads. Often in the playoffs you get a couple guys who just go in the tank, who don't perform, who really let their team down, but not here. They were the best team the past two (well, you could maybe say six) months, no question about it.
The goal (?): Airborne puck, you can't say for sure, forget it. Flames fan, any time you feel like arguing over that call, talk to a Sabres fan, who at least has video evidence that Brett Hull was in the crease.
I never thought I'd find a group of people worse than Leafs fans, yet there they are: the Calgary Flames bandwagon. It's just an offside...stop cheering you imbeciles!
Originally posted by X-FactorAll I have to say is that was a goal in OT of Game 6!
And UM never committed pass interference against Ohio State.
UM against Ohio State??? OHHHHHHH, you mean the OTHER UM.
Congrats to the Lightning. Even though I hated "Wood" for a long time in Toronto, it's nice to see an older Andreychuk collect the prize. I don't think the disallowed (ignored, whatever) goal in game 6 will have any lasting history like Hull's did. Even if it was allowed, there was still about 5 minutes left.
Anyways, my condolences to the Flames and their fans. I'm Jarome Iginla will give that team plenty to cheer about in the next few seasons (assuming there are next seasons).
Behold, the chalice representing the power of my fro! Be afraid, L.A. Be very afraid!
In light of the impending work stoppage in the NHL it almost seems appropriate that the Stanley Cup has gone to Florida to retire.
Blood is blood - 1st period, 3rd period or OT - a call had to be made. I'm surprised that I haven't seen any accusations of St. Louis doing a blade job.
Great series - Great 3rd period - at 2-0 I switched allegiances and began to cheer for the Flames because I wanted to see Triple OT

That's a great line!
I hope we're all proven wrong, though. Mainly because I have gone in on season tickets for next year.

What does blood have to do with calling a penalty?

The bad call was charging because it wasn't. St. Louis got high sticked during the hit which is why he got cut open. That means it should have been a 4 minute double minor for high sticking instead of 2 minutes for Charging. Not that it really mattered anyways.
That's entirely possible. The only 2 replays I saw were when ABC replayed the hit right after it happened, and neither gave a good up-close view. Couldn't tell if the stick made contact or not.
St. Louis looked to be bent over a bit, and the Calgary guy's stick didn't get up too far, but (again) I haven't seen a good replay. I'm not a fan of either team, but I was pulling for Calgary after TB eliminated the Flyers.
Well, if the Isles had to lose to somebody, it may as well have been the team that went on to become the champions. It must be nice for Khabibulin to know that his critics when it comes to the postseason can be a little quieter now.
Also, great job by the Flames. As Freeway said, I never would have expected them to get past the first round of the playoffs.
St. Louis did a total blade job and the refs fell for it. Sneaky!... I at times wonder if someone can actually get away with it
That Tampa editorial is hilarious. How insincere can you be, totally unprofessional... Now excuse me as I start up my Bad blood recap/review.

It's an automatic. If you hit a guy with a high stick and draw blood it's a four minute penalty, no questions asked. The reason people are pissed off is that Fraser called a bullshit charging penalty, indicating that he completely missed the high stick. I think if he had called the high stick instead there'd be no argument, because that's a pretty cut and dry call.

Yeah, but then everyone would be going apeshit over him calling a four-minute minor in the dying minutes of a Stanley Cup Game 7 third period. Double minors don't happen that often to begin with, even with blood.
If a ref makes any penalty call at that point in such a game he's going to hear about it for the rest of his life. Especially if a goal is scored.
I've never noted Kerry Fraser as a poor referee; I always thought he was pretty good. Mind you, he's never 'screwed' MY team...

Anyone who is going to go 'apeshit' over a four minute penalty call in that situation is an imbecile, so let's not worry too much about them. A two or four minute penalty wouldn't have made much diff, since there was only a minute and change left anyway.
It's in the rulebook: if a player is hit with a high stick and it draws blood it's a four minute double minor penalty. A player is to be responsible for his stick, so there's not much room for judgment. Look at the video tape and it clearly happened. There'd be no room to dispute that call. You see it or you don't.

He gets to be there but MARK MESSIER is the playing *IN* the Heritage Classic Game. Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, back together again! The Habs tried to get Patrick Roy as a ringer but he's busy.
