What a fantastic game, and a great series so far.

The intensity level brought by the Flames is unbelievable. I am very impressed by the forechecking, goaltending, and the speed they are bringing every single shift. If I was a Flames fan, I would be a little vary about there ability in the face off cirlce, they have to get better. I think the final count was around 45-23 in favour of the Wings.

Brett Hull hasn't scored a goal in Calgary since 1996. I hope it stays that way....great hockey player, but a shithead otherwise.

A nice ovation and chant (Theo, Theo) for Mr Fluery...it would be great to see if he can get it together so he can finish off his career in a Flames uniform.

I hope you all are enjoying fantastic hockey this playoff season...might be the last for a while....

Nashville makes it's post season franchise debut and win 2 games.

Calgary makes the playoffs for the first time in 8 years, which means 5 of the 6 Canadian teams are in the postseason.

3 of those 5 teams, make it to the second round by eliminating higher seeds.

NJ and Dallas, both recent Cup winners are gone in the first round. With NJ gone, it guarantees a new champion.

Old blood Colorado and Detroit make it to the second round, but currently trail their respective series.

Philadelphia seems to have FINALLY gotten over past post season failures, but TO still has a chance.

Tampa Bay looks like they can prove that they're the best team in the playoffs and perhaps, the best team in the NHL.

To say the least, the NHL needs these new, young teams (SJ, CAL, TB) to make it far in the playoffs. Unlike the perception that the Mighty Ducks were a joke and it was horrible for the league to have a team named after a kids movie making it to the Stanley Cup Finals, if either Tampa, SJ or Calgary were to win it all, they would all make viable champions and could lead to a bigger hockey cornerstone in each of those markets.

Either way, I'm rooting for any of those 3 teams, with a little more bias towards Calgary and TB.

BOOO! Brett Hull is fucking great. I wish more athletes would show some personality and say what they're really feeling instead of giving the same old stock answers.

Good series, though, looks like Calgary's Canada's only hope at the Cup unless Toronto can muster something up against Philly.

It's been very easy to get behind the Flames in this little run of theirs. They're showing a lot of the attributes that have made the Oilers a fun underdog to root for over the past few season - they're fast, they never stop coming, and you never see one of their guys dog a play. Surprisingly, whereas I figured they'd only go as far as Kiprusoff could carry them this year, goaltending has been the most suspect aspect of their game.

Better to be up 2-1 than down 2-1, and it's definitely too early to get comfortable if you're pulling for the Flames, but the Wings flat out looked like pylons more often than not tonight. It's clear they can't keep up. If Calgary can just learn how to finish on more of their chances, this series could be out of hand to the extent that the Sharks/Avs are.

Oh, and Socks...Fleury is done. You're about as likely to see Lanny McDonald lace 'em up next year.

I hope you're using "Young" as a descriptor of the players on the team, rather than the franchise...since it's 32 this year. Still, it's been a fan-friggin-tastic year and it's brought a lot of fans back into the fold. Whether or not these are just lame bandwagoneers is yet to be seen.

And my hope is that if Fleury proves he's cleaned up, the Flames would give him a scouting job or something and have a jersey retirement ceremony for him, Mike Vernon & Al MacInnis sometime in the near future. It'd be classy for the team to pay tribute to the three men who helped architect their success.

NHL PLAYOFFS:
TAMPA BAY leads MONTREAL 2-0; Game 3 is TONIGHT
PHILADELPHIA leads TORONTO 2-0; Game 3 is Wednesday
DETROIT & CALGARY tied 1-1; Game 3 is TONIGHT
SAN JOSE leads COLORADO 3-0; Game 4 is Wednesday

I meant young age-wise and in different franchises contending for the Cup. The franchise may be 32 years old, but when was the last time they were any good?

NJ, Colorado, Detroit....their continual winning ways have gotten old. The NHL could use the same type of parity that is played out in the NFL, where these 4 teams can come in as favorites, but that doesn't mean they'll win the Cup.

Toronto and Philly may be old franchises, but if either team wins the Cup, that would definitely be something new and welcome.

Now if only the CBA could be resolved to continue the momentum the NHL has been picking up.

A 72 game season doesn't sound too bad. Especially when it seems like the only thing both sides seem to agree on is a shorter regular season.

Even though my money would still be on the Redwings, like it was tonight (Yes, Net Hack's wallet is lighter), but I really think now the Flames has a very good chance in winning this series... I didn't view this game as a fluke or an off night for the Wings. I see the Flames quick & young team matching really well against the Wings aging & slower defense, the Flames forwards were winning races to the puck more times then not and I don't see no reason why they can't continue it

I'm falling in love all over again on how the Flames are playing, they are reminding me so much of their great years of the Late 80s-Early 90s. I like their aggressiveness, and their hunger for the puck (I wish my Leafs played with the same hunger, with the exception of a few player so many quit & don't seem to want to get their nose dirty, well they did a better job in Game 2, but I digress)... And these playoffs are Iginla coming out party, it's tough playing in the Mountain time zone in Calgary for people in the East to watch your games. But the playoffs you get more exposer & he's really showing what a great player he is.

As for Theo Fleury, he's one of my favorite players of all time. I put him down as my Right-Winger in my dream lineup thread. But this team in 2005 should not get Fleury & his possible baggage he brings. Even if he does get it together, the "on the road" life that is the NHL schedule is something that Theo doesn't need & the Flames shouldn't risk being responsible for... I like Freeway suggestion, honor him, give him a scouting or a PR job to have in part of your franchise but his direct on ice contribution days are/should be behind him.

I am sure that statement would get a lot of heat here in St Louis.

But then again, when they released him, they said he would never help a team win a cup,and that is why they let him walk. Four years and a few cups later, and the Blues have Doug Wieght and Kieth ktuckcktkcuck and cant get any closer than Hull took them.

A-FRICKIN'-MEN!! Hockey interviews have got to be the most boring in professional sports. At least Hull brings a bit of life to that sport. Especially when they mike him for events like the All-Star festivities. Nuke LaLoosh from Bull Durham should have taken his cliches from a hockey player. When Don Cherry is considered "controversial", your sport has a long way to go to catch up with the others insofar as interesting side stories and such.

That said, the Flames are scaring the bejeesus out of me, and not because of Kiprusoff as I originally thought. They are just out-muscling the Wings to every loose puck.

Oh, and Derian Hatcher blows donkey balls so far.... He's replacing Larry Murphy as the Human Pylon.

So I guess I'm the only one who thought the Wings got screwed partially by terrible officiating...

Randy Orton: I say a lot of things, Jim Bob. Some of them make sense aaaaaand some of them don’t. It’s really a crapshoot with Randy Orton. I think that makes interviews exciting.

"Speed kills, Del." If the Flames can keep that speed and tempo for tomorrow night, look out.

You know, after the Flames got 3 or 4 power plays in a row, I thought something was fishy, too. But I kept a close eye on all the hitting and extracurriculars and I didn't see where any Flames were doing anything bad. The usual clutching and grabbing, sure, but they made sure nothing was blatant. They just out-muscled the Wings. Props to the Wings for not diving though, like those wussy Habs (who are getting EXACTLY what they deserve now).

Quick question for Freeway (since he is a studier of all that is the Flames): The hard camera for the Saddledome seems to be SO low to the ice. I noticed it on both our local and CBC broadcasts. Has it always been this way? It's a little distracting...

From what I can tell, probably. The Dome always had the CBC, Global & Sportsnet hard cameras on the bench side of the arena near center ice at the top of the lower bowl. They did renovations in 1996 or 1997 when they ripped out some of the highest lower bowl seats to put in boxes, but I seem to recall that they kept the cameras in the same place...even building a swank box for them.

Thanks for the info Freeway. Tough game tonight. I'm surprised the Wings pulled it out with Calgary scoring twice in :18 and Detroit having NO POWER PLAYS.

That said, Nieminen is a little bitch for running Joseph like that at the end of the game. And he's an even bigger puss by letting the ref protect him after that. I'll be laughing my ass off if he gets suspended for that cheap crap, especially since he, Nilson and Donovan have played so amazingly thus far.

Best two out of three now...

EDIT: Had to change the word bastard to bitch after seeing replays of Nieminen's cheap shot and subsequent running away like a little girl.

I take it since Toronto hasn't said anything about suspending him then that means he is not going to be? It wasn't all that rough, Joseph got up pretty fast, but it was blattant and stupid and unnecessary. He probably should at least get an assbeating from Hatcher or McCarty in game five...the refs won't let him skate away from a fight in Detroit that's for DAMN sure.

It was amusing listening to Mickey Redmond go completely apeshit when Nieminem ran Joseph...something about how Joseph should give him the olde British Columbia two handed stick swing?! Classic Redmond on that one, ha!

Edit: About an hour after my post nhl.com released this story (nhl.com)

First off Nieminem did a dumb, dumb move. But dude if you are going to pull a kypreos & try to take out the goalie then TAKE HIM OUT (Lady Byng winner I am not).

A one game suspension is really tough on the playoffs, I don't think it was as vicious to deserve it. They should just allow a Red Wings tough guy to pound on him in the first period & not give the Wings player an instigator and call it even.

Luckily "Blind" Rhett Warrener & former Flames captain Dave Lowry have suited up for Game 5. They moved Oleg Saprykin to the second line with Nilson & Donovan to keep the speed on that line at 11. It's gonna be a good game!

And there's the series...unless Stevie Y can have a miracle recovery. Warrener was told by doctors he had to sit out 7 days for his eye injury and I'm thinking that Yzerman's injury is just as bad if not worse.

The Wings have hard enough time winning with Yzerman, I doubt they can do it without him.

In addition, Flames have just been playing solid, solid hockey. Hope Calgary doesn't burn TOO much from the riots if and/or when the Flames pull it off..

Holy sh*tballs!! This is gonna be damn tough for the Wings. 80% of game 5 winners (when the series is tied 2-2) win the series. Unless Yzerman can come back (and don't put it past him - this guy is 100% HEART), the Wings may be dead in the water. Just like I was afraid of in another thread, Kiprusoff getting hot is the Wings' worst nightmare. However, Detroit can still win since Calgary has only won 2 games at home this whole playoffs. Of course, the Wings will have to overcome 20,000 raving Flames maniacs to do it.

Either way, this series has been fun to watch. And at least (except for Nieminen) the Flames and their fans have been class acts, unlike some others *cough*AVS*cough*.
