For the first episode of the season, much better than previous years. Thought perhaps they could have done a segment or 2 with Carmine before he had the stroke instead of hot-shotting it, but still an interesting development. I'm sure many estranged women would feel safe with their separated husband outside with a high powered rifle at night. Also, were they foreshadowing with the hand-grenade? I guess since they are teasing it so much the Czech will come back to haunt them soon. Waiter deserved to be whacked. Following people into a parking lot never leads to good.
Latest sign RSN's mind might be fading: The new plan is to vote for Jerry Remy's Wally the Beanbag Buddy as the Democratic Primary for President.
The waiter thing was cute, but it seems like it would draw a lot of heat on the big ticket mafia table he was just waiting on. I guess it served it's purpose of getting Pauley and Chris on the same page again.
It'll be interesting to see how or if Tony can keep everything from falling apart this year.
The Maniac Says: I think Tony is a little sappy with the Doc. He really does need to see her professionally. Pauly needs to be whacked and Chris needs to be the trigger man. Carmela needs to get laid and give Tong his divorce papers. Lets hope these ex prison wise guys can breath some new life into the show, because last years the story was a bit lame.
The opening scene--poll unkempt, paper, but no Tony in boxers, Meadow running it over, AJ's simmering anger with Carmella
They had Tony enter the scene in the background of foreground conversations/actions, usually silhouetted.
He never drinks Carmella's coffee anymore (since its what she did with Furio) and neither does the little troll he sends over.
Paulie and Christopher actually making up after their run-in with the waiter.
And, of course, there is the first animal to visit and like the house since the pilot and first season. Tony doesn't want to kill the bear as much as see what its doing on his property.

I couldn't agree with you more, rsn. This year is already off to a much more exciting start than the last entire season (ok, 'cept maybe when Ralphie got whacked, THAT was pretty exciting!). I was wondering the same thing about the hand-grenade...what was that all about?? We'll have to wait and see, I guess :-)
I think the waiter getting wacked (hopefully) just shows you that the storyline is going back to its rough mafia roots rather than the "Soprano immediate family focus" it had last year, yet it is still further developing the interpersonal relationships with all the characters. I'm anxious to see where they take Anthony Jr's character, as I think I heard he plays a bigger role this year.
All in all, good start to the season...it's about time!

My favorite subtle joke of the week was Johnny Sack saying to the family after the stroke "We're all praying for him".

That's a nice touch to be sure, but I'll hear no talk of Vinnie from "Doogie Howser MD" referred to as a troll.
Pot will take you to Outer Space and the you'll be ALOOOOOOONE.

I KNEW I recognized that dude from something.
As far as the show goes, it was pretty damn entertaining. The whole Class of 2004 angle can open up a lot of possibilities.
I think Buscemi is a great actor, but he just doesn't seem like a gangster to me. Hopefully he can prove me wrong.
Also, I hope they tie up some loose ends. The mention of the Russian in the woods is a good sign. Whatever happened to Raymond Curto talking to the feds?

I have two sons, and that cracked me up no end. There's the essence of a teenager in one scene--and of a mother. Frightening off bears with frying pans is all in a day's work.

Um, it was never about just rough mafia roots. The tagline for the show was "If one family doesn't kill him, the other one will." At some point people got these expectations of the show that it is the typical mob show/movie like a Goodfellas.
You've fallen in that same trap, Submit2theXFace, and I'm not sure there's any way out.

Actually, I was one of the few people I know that actually enjoyed the show last season, though I thought it was slower than the rest. I understand the tagline and premise behind the show. I just thought that the show overall was more off-balance last year, tilting it more towards the family side and that turned some people off.
As far as "falling in the trap", believe it or not I have never even seen Goodfellas, so I don't know that I know what a "typical" mob movie/show is ;-) [I did enjoy the Road to Perdition though--does that count? :-)] I enjoy the Sopranos for the overall show, both sides of the family. I am a big fan of mafia history, so maybe I enjoy watching the interworkings of the mafia more, but I'd miss his family (as in immediate) interactions if they weren't there. Didn't mean to sound so one sided--I just liked it better when the show was a better balance of both.

If your a fan of mafia history, watch Goodfellas. Good look at part of the New York mob scene from the 60's through 80's.
Latest news out of Hollywood is that Sid Eudy was offered the role of Jesus in The Passion. Unfortunately, that fell through due to Sid's continued insistence that he be crucified under the title: King of the Squirrels.
1) After whacking the waiter and running, Paulie grabs the money that was given to pay the tab and runs off with Chris. When Paulie calls to smooth things over the next day, he says "we'll split the tab"....but they never paid the tab..they ran off with the $$. So did Paulie mean that he was keeping half of Chris' money? If so, why did Chris end the call with an apology? I'd be pretty pissed if someone ran off with $1200 of mine and then offered to split it later on.
2) Very subtle, but noticeable if you look....at the end of the show, when Tony relieves Benny as "bear watcher", look closely at when Tony opens the door to go outside with the rifle. He momentarily "pulls" the door to open it, then realized he needs to "push" it to get out. He lived in this house for all these years and didn't automatically know he had to push the door to open it? Looks like the editors either didn't notice Gandolfini's gaffe or just left in in there, thinking nobody would notice.
Come on, Sunday....hurry up....
