Good God, I'm not sure I've seen so much venom on the ice since I've started watching intently (which admittedly, has not been very long.) During the last 2:00 of the game, players were dropping the gloves every face-off, and even the normally-timid Patrick Lalime came screaming out of the crease to take on Robert Esche. Jacques Martin is a smart man for sending Havlat to serve whatever penalty needed to be served at that time.

419 PIMs.... I'm not sure I've seen anything like this since these teams AHL Clubs (the Phantoms and the Binghamton Senators) had their brawl earlier this year.

I'm curious to see how many suspensions'll be handed out in this one.

Taking wrestling logic you KNOW that the next game will have to be officated by the referee crew of Dave Schultz and Tiger Williams

I'm soo offended by all this violence. I think both teams should be reprimanded to the fullest, and it has nothing to do that they are battling The Leafs for first... Okay maybe a little, LoL

Bobby Clarke (who, by the way, was easily the cheapest chickenshit in NHL history, challenged only by Dougie Gilmour) has already basically promised that the Flyers will target Hossa and Alfredsson during the next Ottawa/Philly tilt. Classy.

Fuck Bobby Clarke. The guy was one of the biggest cheap shot artists in his day, and is a terrible GM to boot.

Here's a guy who's been such a dick throughout his career that as a player he won the Hart trophy twice, yet never won the NHLPA's Pearson award.

He gets no respect because he has never earned it. He may call Jacques Martin a "gutless puke," but at least Martin was smart enough to keep his star players off the ice when it was obvious they were being targeted.

I love hockey fights as much as the next guy, maybe more. I'll be taping the rebroadcast of the game tomorrow on Comcast Sportsnet, or at least the last five minutes of the third period.

I'm a Philly guy at heart. I had AHL Phantoms tickets for four years (home of Neil Little, LUCHA GOALIE~!), until I got sick of Clarke's overall franchise mismanagement and gave them up this season. When Clarke resigns (since Snider will never fire him), I'll be back on board, though I'm having just as much fun watching ECHL hockey down the road.

But this pound-on-the-Senators imperative is silly prickwaving. This brawl was inspired in part by Havlat's match penalty for sticking Mark Recchi, but Havlat didn't even get touched (he sat in the box serving Lalime's penalty as time ran out, and nobody went after him earlier in the game).

Hey, Flyers -- want to impress me? Don't do it in early March. Do it in the playoffs; face the Senators then and SCORE A COUPLE OF GOALS this time. Unlike last time. Or the time before.

Jacques Martin did the right thing by putting Havlat in the box and keeping him on the bench. I don't understand why Tony Granato put Steve Moore on the ice when the game was completely over and the violence/fighting had already been well established.

Everyone could see the game was getting out of hand just like Philly/Ottawa. Martin took the heat to protect his player. Granato should have let Steve Moore sit on the bench. I won't defend what Bertuzzi did but Granato should have been smarter then that. Martin's game was even in reach when he pulled Havlat out, who probably could have helped close the gap.

I agree with you on both counts, and think that Martin was smart not to hand Havlat over on a silver platter at the end of the game.

But the game is sixty minutes. If getting Havlat was such a moral imperative, they had their opportunities earlier and didn't take them. In the old days, the fans would've been screaming for the goons to take out Havlat during the pre-skate warmup.

Instead, they racked up a huge pile of penalty minutes in semi-random fights (defending their own non-fighters from Ottawa's aggressors AFTER Brashear and Ray started the festivities, according to most accounts). Nice going, guys -- in the game where you were going to exact revenge, you got challenged in your own building, and the object of your wrath left untouched and grinning. That'll send a strong message.
