From Meltzer:
"Bret Hart will reveal in tomorrow's column in the Calgary Sun that he was offered a spot in Wrestlemania. The proposal, made by Carl DeMarco of WWF Canada, was for Hart to appear, unadvertised, as the referee in the Chris Jericho vs. HHH WWF title match. Hart turned down the proposal and the appearance, but did briefly consider it."
I'm really looking at this less from the Bret Hart aspect and more from this: doesn't that give you the impression that they're planning a Jericho win? I mean maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's the first thing I thought. Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there.
And I think you're fat. So how do you like me now?

Yeah, he wouldn't come in to ref and count a pinfall AGAINST a fellow canadian. I hope he says why he considered it and why he decided against it.

Caring is the first step towards disappointment.
If Bret Hart DOES show up, I fully expect Vince McMahon to hire Goldberg to kick him in the head a couple more times. The last two promos I've heard from him would be dangerous to people operating heavy machinery at the time.
Another reason that Hart may have turned it down is because they possibly wanted him to count FOR Triple H. Since H is Michaels best friend (maybe) it makes perfect sense that Hart would probably hate him too. It all goes back to politics.

I saw a commercial for RAW on TNN a few weeks ago. It was for the RAW the week after Hogan destroyed Rock in the ambulance. It was about a 30 second spot and basically it was hyping Rock Vs. Hogan at wrestlemania. Then they shoved in Triple H/Jericho hype in the last 5 seconds of it, almost as an after thought. This gave me the impression that Rock/Hogan is going to headline the show with Jericho/Triple H as the semi-main event. Now given the WWF's tendancy to have WM end with a happy ending, this would lead me to believe that Rock is going to go over Hogan which would mean that heel Jericho will probably retain.
In my opinion, I think extending Jericho's title run passed WM would be a really good idea. I think if he keeps getting tainted wins over big names and little names alike, say to around King Of The Ring, people will be so fed up with him that when he gets dethrowned the place will go nuts.
I know that he is Triple H and everything, but Rock and Austin have put Jericho over on numerous occasions, so has Kurt Angle, Triple H is just coming back from 8 months off, and, I don't want to rag on Triple H, but why should instantly be given the title when others have been busting their asses through the WWF's toughest creative period? I'm not Jericho mark or anything, but I think the best business decision the wwf could make is keep the belt on Jericho.
1. The fact that Bret Hart even considered it lets you know that enough money will make about anyone do anything. As much s$#t Bret has talked about the WWF and Vince and he considered it? That tells me something.
2. The WWF has gotten so desperate it is getting pathetic. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a Hogan/Rodman vs. Leno/DDP rematch at Summerslam. It is so easy to just go back to basics and tell stories in the ring. I have no idea why they won't just do that.

January 4th 1999 - The day WCW injected itself with 10 gallons of Liquid Anthrax...AKA...The day Hogan "Defeated" Nash to win the WCW title in front of 40,000.
Even if he didn't take it, I love the fact he allegedly considering taking it.
It proves what a scheming hypocrite I always thought he was.

The problem with that is that if Jericho wins at Mania, Triple H would surely them beat him at Backlash the next month.
I would not be surprised to see Vince go after Bret, considering he brought back Hall, Nash, and Hogan. It just shows Vince is willing to forget what happened in the past. Now will Bret do the same? If Bret cared about his fans he would make one last comeback like what Hogan is doing.
Why? So the booking crew can shit all over his past and legacy like they do everything else? They have a really bad history of fucking up "sure things".

I think you are being a little hard on the booking team here. Flair and Hogan haven't had their past or legacy shit on at all. What would make Hart different? I think Bret should have done it for a few reasons. He deserves a better sendoff than nothing at all. He could say goodbye in front of 60,000 in his home country. Also, if he started mending some of his bridges he might not be so bitter. If the WWF is willing to try to patch things up, then why not try?
The Invasion bombed. I'm curious what other "sure things" you think the WWF has blown. If they truly had a really bad history of messing up the sure things, I think they would be out of business like WCW.
Updating Ohio State's basketball record could get to be a chore. Just remember, Michigan sucks.
just as i was about to post "the deal could have anything" yadda yadda yadda "we don't know" yadda yadda, bret's calgary sun column apparently went up. quoting from the torch (via the rockin' www.a1wrestling.com):
-In his Calgary Sun column this weekend, Bret Hart said that Carl DeMarco, the WWF's Canadian promoter, offered him a spot as a surprise guest referee at WrestleMania this year for the Chris Jericho vs. Triple H match. "I got a call from the WWF this week. I can't say I was shocked. I wasn't even surprised. In fact, it was predictable." He said he turned it down despite their offer of giving him access to his archived WWF footage that he'd love to have the rights to. The always humble Bret added that if he did it, "it's probably be the biggest pop in the history of pro wrestlng." He said they also offered him a spot punching Vince McMahon in front of the Canadian crowd, but he turned that down because he didn't want to turn a real life situation into just an angle. "In that one phony punch, everything that's happened would be minimized into an angle," Bret wrote. "Maybe wrestling fans would love it. My fans would hate it. And so would I." He said he was going to meet with Vince McMahon last May in Calgary, but Vince cancelled the meeting at the last second. He concluded with a message to Vince: "If you want to air our differences, all you have to do is pick up the phone. I think a private conversation is in order, not some public spectacle at the expense of my dignity."
thanks to what's his name for blah blah blah.
i gotta say... bret has a point. from what he said, it doesn't seem like vince was so much willing to "put the past behind him" as he was willing to "show his ass for cash".
i doubt bret's fans would hate it though. i'd pop my ass off.
it sort of answers the question about who is going to get the pin, though. at least as of that moment. vince's boy loses. "which we already knew." (go see mumford. really.)
It's just you against the group mind. I like weiners.
I read the Hart article and I totally expect Bret back in the WWF in some capacity by Summerslam. I think he basically wants Vince to talk to him, issue some kind of statement basically saying "My name is Vince, and I am an asshole". Vince is getting so desperate now I am sure he will release those "secret" photos that Bossman has been hold ransom all these years to get on TV.
I always thought Bret was a whiny bitch who wanted money, fame and attention above everything else. Even talking about considering a move back to the WWF makes hime look like the biggest hypocrite in wrestling. I will pop and be happy if Bret is back. But looking at the big picture, what does all these recent moves say about the WWF? They feel like the have to bring back Goldust, Mr. Perfect, Hogan, Nash, Hall, Bret, etc.? The have no faith in the current roster? I think they are just not creative enough to get the current roster over so they keep adding old names. That is the WCW way and is a path down to failure.

Agreed, the key to the future success of the WWF is to have NEW talent to hype, rather then the same old people who have been around in one form or another for 20 years (in Hulk Hogan's case). You can't have the main eventers be the same people year after year, otherwise people will get bored and move on to other things besides wrestling.

I hope Bret considers coming back for the fans.
I was a huge Bret Hart mark. In fact, I latched onto Bret post-Wrestlemania IV when he destroyed Bad News Brown's trophy after being double-crossed in the battle royal. However, when Vince screwed Bret--I felt I had to choose sides. The WWF or Bret Hart. I chose the WWF. I started calling Hart a whiny this, a bitter that, you name it. Every time he'd cut a promo in WCW, with every interview, with every Sun column, I'd say...you washed-up bastard, get on with your life. Since then, however, I think Vince McMahon has proven who the real a-hole is. Morally, I don't see how anyone can defend him. That isn't to say Bret is an angel, but if there's any shred of moral high ground left to be taken in this long-standing affair, Bret has to take it.
If I were Bret, I'd never even think about coming back to the WWF or making a deal with the WWF unless Vince made a public apology for everything that has happened since Montreal. The problem with that is, I don't know that Vince McMahon has sincere bone in his body. He is so morally vacuous that even an apology notarized by God would come off as a publicity stunt.
So if Bret Hart cares about his fans, the ones who have always believed in what he's stood for, I don't think he can ever return to the WWF without sacrificing the only real thing he had left to offer them.

Do you seriously think that the WWE could get away with parading Les Thatcher out there as Al Wilson? I mean c'mon, be serious. That's her real father. The guy on Confidential was her step father.
