If you post a new reply in a thread, when you're taken back to the thread the "Next thread" link will actually take you to the next thread you WOULD have gone to if you hadn't posted, unlike before when it loses your place and changes to the "Mark forum read" link. This will affect only like a dozen of you who actually start from the bottom and read every single thread but for those few people, it will be a heck of a lot more convenient.

Just a reminder that navigation tends to be a lot easier when you set the "posts per page" threshhold very high (I use 100) and then turn on "show new posts only." Remember to frequently mark forums read for fastest results!

Being that I am someone who reads from the bottom to the top, clicking Next Thread along the way, this will be very helpful when I *do* post. Thank you.

One problem that I seem to have now (and before also, but this might be only me (using Mozilla)), is that occasionally when I start at the bottom of a thread and then move up, the Mark Forum Read will replace the Next Thread link before I have read the entire forum or before I notice it. Because of this I will mark the forum read by mistake with many threads not read. I am curious to how this happens. I assume that someone has posted in the thread to move it to the top of the thread list, but how did I click into it?

The moral is that I will have to be more careful before clicking on Next Thread

That sounds like an unintentional side effect of the change. I'll have to figure out what you are running into and try to recreate it with CRZ later tonight (if I'm still up when he heads into work)

As someone else who reads forums from old to new, thank you.

Although I've only used this new feature once, after clicking on 'next thread' after posting, it only showed me the new posts in the next thread. I usually have it on show all. I don't know if that's a bug or an anomaly, and I can't say I mind clicking 'show all', after posting, but then again, I didn't mind things the way they were.

Anyway, thanks for the change.

I posted in the baseball forum just now, in what was the second top thread. After posting I used the "next thread" link which took me to what was originally the top thread, I read that and clicked "next thread" again which took me back to the thread I originally posted in, which was of course now the top thread.

With 2 threads it's not such a big deal, but if you're posting in a number of threads as you work your way up, you'll be double processing alot of stuff.

Sometimes someone will post into your "Next Thread" making it the most recent thread by the time you click on it, as opposed to wherever it was in the list when your thread page was being regenerated. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about that other than encourage vigilance...it's been a (potential) problem since the board started.

Hmm, THAT would be a bug. I'll try to reproduce the problem tonight and fix it. A quick once over of the code doesn't show the wrong pages being called but I might have put something in the thread pages I'm not easily seeing.

{EDIT: Oh, never mind. I found the incorrect linking and fixed it.}

Yeah, but that's normal behaviour...nothing you can do about that. Annoying, but easy enough to just click past when you know you're at the end of the line.

This seems related. Has anyone else noticed the "Mark Forum Read" feature behaving oddly?

I click Mark Forum read and it returns me to the main page, but I then have to refresh the screen to see the "update".

If this is a "just me" problem...apologies all around, but does someone know how to fix it?

Thanks

Mine does this all the time. I think it might be something in the way the browser handles this and not a function of the message board itself. Of course, I could be really, really wrong. I will assume that one of them there admins will speak up before long and tell us, though.

That's a browser thing.

OK...but I've never had this problem before...I'm using IE 5.0 at work. Can I fix it by clearing the cache (or something else)?

Not a big deal...just a little annoying...

I dunno. It happened to me a lot in IE, but I've gradually moved to 'zilla and it's not happening there. I never really figured out why it was happening.

OK...I just had another weirdness...

Guru, when you just replied back to my "quote" I lost both my new post and yours, but refresh brought it back. I think this is our system at work.

We just did some firewall changes here...so I think I'll continue this conversation from home....

Canlsn's "Mark Forum Read" problem just started happening for me as well. I'm pretty sure it's a browser thing for me, though. I'm using Safari. Weird thing is, the board worked fantastic under the beta version, but acts all funky with the 1.0 release.

I can report it as a bug to them, but is there anything specific I should tell them codewise?

EDIT: The Wrestling folder works fine...all the rest are weirding out.

Any time you find yourself needing to reload, it's because you're pulling up your locally cached page. You need to figure out if you can use different configuration settings to get your browser to wisen up and actually see if there's a newer version of the page it's got cached. One way is to select "always load page" or "never used cache" or I don't know what it's called exactly, but some would say it's a bit of a speed hit to not use your cache. I'm at T1 speed so I don't care too much about things like that, of course. ;-)

Zed is on point.

With IE, go:

Tools
Internet Options
Temporary Internet Files
Settings

And then make it check for a newer page every time. Also, you could think abot setting your cache to a lower MB size.

I've also had the Mark Forum Read thing happen, but it never bothers too much as I don't read all of the board anyway.

Actually, I really hate your background. It's almost impossible to read the text at times. I'd really love it if you decided to stop using it.
