Flyers trade Cechmanek to Kings for draft pick (ESPN)

Al Morganti's take this morning: "The Flyers have gotten a second-round draft pick in 2004... for their MVP?"

Peter Svoboda, Cechmanek's agent, on whether Roman really wanted to leave: "The organization (Philadelphia) wanted Roman to leave. Bobby Clarke called me a couple of weeks ago while I was in the Czech Republic. He said a decision had been made and that staying in Philadelphia was not the best situation for Roman and the organization. I asked him for permission to talk to other teams - which he gave to me in writing. It wasn’t that Roman wanted to leave - it was a decision by the organization to go in another direction."

Horseshit. I've bled orange over the years, but I'm DONE until Clarke is gone from the organization. I'm tired of watching the Flyers AND the Phantoms being mismanaged. Goodbye, orange-and-black -- hello, purple-and-black. It's a nice coincidence that our local ECHL team (the Reading Royals) feeds the Kings; I'd already decided to drop my Phantoms ticket plan and start one with the Royals. This is just the icing on the goddamned cake.

Nod, I think I agree with you.
I am not a Flyers fan, but Cechmanek leaving for a second round pick? that is just ridiculous.

I also read on espn or nhl that he wants to dump Leclair..

*sigh* Why bother?

It took you this long to figure that out? Bobby Clarke, has and always will be a piece of shit. His whole handling of Eric Lindros was what put it over the top for me. I don't even like Lindros but Clarke went out of his way to smear and bury the guy on the way out.

When are the Flyers going to get a clue and figure out that Clarke doesn't have what it takes to put together a playoff team? He's unwilling to swallow his personal pride for the good of the franchise. To be a great GM, you need to have tough skin and be willing to admit when you screwed up. Clarke just can't do that, he blames everything on someone else.

Oh, I figured it out a long time ago. There was the Lindros soap opera, the kick-to-the-curb of Roger Neilson because he had the audacity to develop bone cancer, the mutiny against Bill Barber, the excruciating Oates-Ouellet trade (which nearly made me bail in and of itself), the gradual gutting of the Phantoms, and now the scapegoating of Cechmanek to explain consecutive flameouts against Ottawa (eleven games -- twelve Flyers goals. Yeah, bad goaltending is the problem.)

I hope Robert Esche has skin like a rhino, because he's all the organization has in goal right now, and if the Flyers flame out next year with him as the starter... brrr. The Stepfords will clean, stuff and mount him while Clarke hides in his office and whistles innocently.

I forgot about the Ouellet trade. That's gonna be up there with the Flames trading Giguere and the Islanders dealing Salo and Luongo.

I don't think Esche will wind up starting but then again, how many NHL goalies would be willing to enter the goalie hell hole that is the Philadelphia Flyers?

Being from Vancouver, I understand the blaming everything on the goalie mentality. The media here pins any bad move the team makes on the goalie and have been doing so since Kirk McLean left many years ago.

Now with Cechmanek in net for the Kings, they have a pretty decent looking team. Should be enough to get them a playoff spot next season.

Well, Cechmanek did look pretty poor against the Leafs in the first round. Not poor enough to lose the series, but he certainly gave away at least one game on soft goals.

That being said, he's still WAY too good to give up for so little. Bobby Clarke was a weasel when he was a player, and he's a weasel as a GM.

Asshat? That's a new one on me.

Anyway, I'm sick of hearing about Bobby Clarke. Why, you ask? Because everytime I do, it's always in reference to him doing something ridiculous and making a jackass or himself. Now, as an Isles fan, I don't mind seeing the Flyers getting dismantled by their own GM for no good reason (no need to point out the irony of that statement considering some of Milbury's actions throughout most of the 90's), but as a guy who hates stupidity, I can't see much good to this. Right now, everyone in LA is simultaneously screaming "SUCKERS!!" in Philly's direction.

If you're gonna blame anyone, blame Ed Snider, who could have gotten rid of Clarke a long time ago and hasn't. Still blinded by those rings from the 70's, I guess.

First, it's the coaches who keep getting the axe. (Neilson, Barber --although the players had much to do with Barber's ouster) Then, after Hitchcock is hired, Snider makes it clear that the players will have to pay if the team underachieves again. Then, the player who actually didn't underachieve gets booted...for little to no value. At what point do you blame the GM that allows this to happen? Trust me, if this were the Eagles or Sixers, someone in the front office would be paying (the Phillies are excluded as they were allowed to suck for so very long with no consequences)..

I already have a reason to despise Ed Snider -- the forced exit of Pat Croce. I could care less about basketball or the Sixers in general, but Croce is and was a national treasure.

From what I've heard, I think Clarke has several pictures of Snyder in a compromising position with a donkey. Although it may be a goat...

Anyways, I'm willing to bet that Philly never wins another Cup as long as Clarke is running the show, especially with dumb moves like the Cechmanek one...

What kills me the most is that when Clarke was asked by a reporter why all he got for Cech was a second-round pick, he snapped back something about "How do you know how valuable that second-round pick will be?"

Well, gee, Bobby, considering that you gave up a second-round pick AND a first AND a third AND your top goalie prospect (who was last year's AHL Player of the Year, and will probably start for the Caps next year) to rent Adam Oates for six weeks, it can't be too valuable, can it?

I'd give a month's pay to have a Philly reporter confront him with that question and ask "Were you incompetent then, incompetent now, or both?"

As a Kings fan, I would like to thank the Village Idiot in Philly for GIVING the Kings Cechmanek. The Kings already let Felix the Cat walk, and Jamie Storr proved he is not a #1 tender after Potvin got hurt last season.

Bobby Clarke will be the GM as long as Ed Snider has a say in it. He's loyal to him for those Cups in the 70's, and when he let Clarke go to Minnesota in the late 80's and put his idiot son in charge the franchise faltered until the Lindros era. He apparently thinks letting Clarke go would be a bad move. He goes from debacle to debacle with virtually no chance of being fired.

My favorite Bobby Clarke moment was his quote after firing Roger Neilson. "It's not our fault. I didn't tell him to get cancer." What a class act.
