The Devils have acquired Richard Smehlik from the Thrashers for a 4th round pick and Grant Marshall from the Blue Jackets for a 5th rounder.

The Stars have added Stu Barnes from the Sabres for prospect Mike Ryan and a second rounder, and Lyle Odelein from Chicago for Sami Helenius and a conditional pick.

The Stars have also reportedly traded for Doug Gilmour, but the deal is being held up by contractual issues. No word on who would go to Montreal in the deal. I also understand that the Stars are looking to get Teemu Selanne from the Sharks to replace the injured Bill Guerin.

Other hot rumours include the Avs getting Vinnie Damphousse and possibly Mike Ricci from the Sharks. The Blues' goalie situation continues to simmer

My beloved Canucks have yet to do anything and may sit tight, although they've expressed interest in Chris Gratton.

Local buzz says that Jarome Iginla (a.k.a. The Best Flame of the Past Decade) is staying put, as is Martin "No-Trade Clause" Gelinas. Roman Turek is being shopped around, as are Bob Boughner and Rob "I Suck" Niedermayer.

Of course, the Flames'll just make their usual 1-2 minor moves as usual.

The Chase Is On:
8th: Oilers [29-23-8-8] 74pts; 14 games left
14th: Flames [23-31-10-4] 60pts; 14 games left
Flames must win 7 more games than the Oilers do to make playoffs
Any combination of 7 Oilers wins or Flames losses eliminates them from the playoffs

Add to the list of trades Tony Amonte from Phoenix to philadelphia for Philadelphia Phantoms' forward Guillaume Lefebvre, Atlanta's third-round pick this year (previously acquired) and Philadelphia's second-round pick in 2004.

Not much return for a guy like Amonte. He's had one bad season in the last eight (he scored at least 30 in the previous seven years) and now he's essentially given away because the Coyotes have financial troubles.

Another biggie: Anson Carter is off to the Rangers, along with Ales Pisa. In return, the Oilers get Radek Dvorak & Cory Cross.

And the Rangers still won't make the playoffs this year.

I love this deal whether the Rangers make the playoffs or not - I have always liked Anson Carter

I think the Rangers will get in. Either the Islanders or the Bruins will choke.

How about the Leafs this trade season, acquiring Owen Nolan, Doug Gilmour, AND Phil Housley? That's more than what they normally do. Heh, and people thought the Rangers were bad. Well, maybe it'll pay off...

I'm happy about how the Senators managed, getting Bryan Smolinski today. Smolinski adds some much needed toughness in Ottawa, as well as gives them another guy who can put the puck in the net if need be. I think they'll be more of a force this time in the playoffs, as opposed to the team that kept getting eliminated in either the first or second rounds.

How the Canadian Teams Did:

Calgary:
IN: Dean McAmmond, Shean Donovan, J.F. Damphousse, Mike Commodore,
OUT: 5th round pick, Mathias Johansson, Micki Dupont, Rob Niedermayer

Edmonton:
IN: Brad Isbister, Raffi Torres, Radek Dvorak, Corey Cross
OUT: Janne Niinimaa, 2nd round & 4th round pick, Anson Carter, Ales Pisa

Montreal:
IN: 6th round pick
OUT: Doug Gilmour

Ottawa:
IN: Bryan Smolinski
OUT: Tim Gleason

Toronto:
IN: Doug Gilmour, Phil Housley
OUT: 6th round pick, 4th round & 9th round pick

Vancouver:
IN: Brad May
OUT: Conditional draft pick

Overall, the teams that did little did a lot in the preceding days...while the Canucks seem to be secure enough with their line-up to not tamper with it.

As for here on the Island:

Claude Lapointe--gone to Philly
Brad "I'm injured more than Jason Sehorn" Isbister--gone to Edmonton
Raffi Torres--ditto
Chris Osgood--gone to St. Louis

So who's coming in?

Randy Robitailee
Janne Niinimaa
Justin Papineau

That's right, three guys who's names I had a lot of trouble spelling just now. And, that's about all they've got going for them. Well, I guess they'll mean a lot more down the road. The playoffs look more and more distant pretty much everyday....

Oh yeah, and a couple of draft picks too.

As for the folks sent away.....sorry to see Claude go.....Izzy was pretty good, but was injured too often to really bring much to this table.....Raffi was a good prospect, and played pretty solid the few times he got called up........If they absolutely had to dump Osgood, I probably would have waited unitl the off season, just to see how he would have done the rest of the season after coming back from the injury. Well, hopefully, Garth Snow can step up the way he did up until these last couple of games. And looks like Di Pietro doesn't have to worry about seasickness from taking the ferry between the Island and Bridgeport so much (not that the Bridgeport ferry is all that wavy, but whatever).

Robitailee and Papineau may not be very good but Janne Niinimaa is an awesome defencemen, when him and Roman Hamrilik were in Edmonton Niinimaa was usually considered the better player.

Of the Canadian teams, I think Ottawa, Toronto and Calgary did quite well today. Smolinski will help in Ottawa and Gleason would have re-entered the draft as he was never going to sign, so the Sens gave up nothing. Toronto continued to add useful pieces to an already solid line-up and, much as I hate to say it, look poised to go a long way in the playoffs. Calgary added some good young prospects (especially Damphousse and Commodore) and managed to rid themselves of Niedermayer. Bet that makes Freeway happy.

My Canucks on the other hand did very little. Adding Brad May brings toughness on the third or fourth line but does not address the need for second line scoring. The Canadiens essentially stood pat, letting Gilmour go to a contender was, in my opinion, a classy thing to do. They likely could have got more in return, though.

And the Oilers...What the hell was Kevin Lowe thinking? Dropping Niinimaa for Isbister and Torres was bad enough, but Anson Carter for Radek Dvorak? Are you kidding me? With moves like that, I'm not sure that the Oil will hold on to the 8th playoff spot in the West...

Toronto is often used as a movie stand-in for New York so it really was no surprise to see the Toronto Maple Leafs stand-in for the New York Rangers over this past trading deadline with deals that brought in older former all-stars for that last gasp push......

I'm still loving my Rangers deal for Anson Carter....

I can't believe that fans here in Buffalo are actually upset that we lost a basically useless although player like Rob Ray, ineffective captain Stu Barnes and the 6'4" 225 lb. waste of NHL talent that is Chris Gratton. Hello Buffalo!! We are in serious trouble here.Besides having no actual ownership at the present time,we are also one of the NHL's cellar dwellers. It's time to let young talent like Ales Kotalik, Maxim Affinogenov, Tim Connoly, and Ryan Miller take over.. oh yeah and that Satan guy ain't too bad either. My only regret as far as the Sabres go on deadline day is that they did'nt move Alex Zhitnik and his 3.5 million dollar salary, hmm maybe the price tag has something to do w/ that. As far as other trades go I thought the Flyers were the big winners in the East after aquireing Amonte until I remembered the problems he and Roenick had a few years back.. if they can co-exist they are my favorites to win the East.

Oh my Gawd. Gilmour is already injured, and Housley is still nursing his foot injury and who know's who he'll rebound from that with so little time to connect with his team mates x_x
