The thing I worry about is this: I say some stupid things sometimes. I don't mean to do it on purpose, but sometimes I post without thinking. So lets say I make a really bad post, and half of Wienerboard ignores me. Well, I don't want that, because the whole point of the board is to share information and opinions. So you send me a message saying that people hate me. I, in turn, change my posting style as not to anger them. Well, guess what, they're not going to see it because THEY'LL STILL HAVE ME IGNORED!

So, I guess what I'm saying is that 1) I hope people aren't too quick to judge based on one post, and 2) is there anything that can be done if people stop doing the annoying things that make others ban them?

EDIT: In a way, this system could become "One strike and you're out."

Good Lord. I was so excited when I read this that someone actually knew how to spell the word "piqued," and didn't spell it "peeked" or "peaked." You will never been ignored by me!

Edit for the Zims: Will there be a way for folks to check their own profile and know who is ignoring them?

Well - I was going to implement the feature but not explain the repercussions of the auto-ban to people. At this point, Chris wrote the ignore code and he's leaving it up to me to decide if I want to do the banning part, so that seriously decreases the odds of it happening.

I was going to make the posts just not appear at all - Chris' solution is much more civilized.

I was also thinking of writing a script that would put someone in "Time-out" or force them into a chat like the old BBS systems used to have. The "voice of God" function was so that I could make sure that someone knew to cut it out right away instead of waiting and hoping they saw the PM that I sent them.

I should probably enable a "sent file" for PMs and a read receipt option on them too, but they are really a throw-away feature.

I've considered letting people send PMs to people that are ignoring them, but having them re-route to my inbox instead - just in case someone is harassing someone else.

Since Chris did the important part already, though, the odds are low that I will do any of this. I'm swamped at work and can't really get to any of this for a month or two at least.

//edit: At this time, unless I do something, there will be nothing set up to see who is ignoring you. I ~may~ put a 5 level warning system in place - if you hit level 5 you get banned. I'm going to see how many people get put on ignore over the next few days to gauge the response to this feature.

PS> I'm also considering making a system where certain unidentified posters will have additional weight in determining who gets silenced. Muhahaha
I haven't decided if you should be able to get PMs or send PMs to someone that you have listed as ignored.

I, for one, am scared of this "ignore" function... I have just seen it on other boards, and let me tell you, it got old really fast watching half of the "regular" posters start going "Iggy!!! Iggy!!!" everytime someone said something they found remotely irritating. Granted, I know that the admin's here keep much closer tabs on garbage like that, but this does not allay my fears...
Well, so far everything seems the same... lets hope it keeps up. I do, still, fear for the Politics forum, though...

I don't think the ignore will be used much in the Politics Forum though. The ignore command would take away most of the fun we have in their trying to deconstruct the other sides argument as weak.

If enough people ignore someone, they disappear... where have I seen this before???

I have to agree with Mr. Boffo about giving posters some sort of warning that they are being ignored, so that if they are engaging in certain behavior they can have the opportunity to change it before its too late. Especially if banning can become a result of being ignored too much. I like Guru's 5 Levels of Ignore, so long as we are told which level we are on. I don't need to know who is ignoring me, but I'd like to know if 1-20 people are ingorning as opposed to more than half the board. If someone can blatantly see that no one cares what they have to say, they may very well pack up their bags long before the autoban feature kicks in. Or, as Mr. Boffo suggests, they can change their posting habits, in the hopes that people will stop ignoring them.

I can't say I like the idea of giving certain weiners more weight in any ignore-bannings than others.

"5 levels of ignored" rating may be a good idea, but then that will invariably lead to the following thread type-

---
WTF?!?!?!

Why is everyone ignoring me? Blah blah blah, you blah blah blah... I just don't understand it...
---

Even though the poster is being ignored by everyone he/she wants an answer from.

I guess there is a balance that goes with anything, and, like everything else here, it will be "Behave or be Banned." Just out of curiousity (because I forget) - Is there some kind of "Etiquitte of Wienerville" you have to read as a part of registering? If not, that might be a good idea at this point. Catch them on the way in sort of philosophy...

And yes, the Politics Forum would be no fun at all for me if I ignored people there... who wants to AGREE all the time?

I would have to think that anyone capable of thinking that posting a "Why is everyone ignoring me?" thread in response to multiple ignores is a good a idea is probably on their way to auto-ban and the number of those threads can be handled by the Zims and thrown in Banished. I would have to think that if anyone had a legitimate question regarding why they're being ignored, until its known who is doing the ignoring, the Zims would be the best source for info.

It makes sense to me that a goal might be to *not* be so obnoxious or offensive so as to get ignored on a regular basis.

Well, obviously, DrOp. But each person has different tastes and opinions. CRZ has many problems with Cerebus, for example (I'll admit, he has problems with me as well), whereas, I can't recall something that Cerebus said that really annoyed me. What you consider offensive may be different from other people, and if your first response is to ignore people who offend you, then those people never find out what it is that you find offensive anyway. Thus, they never change their actions, whereas, if you told them, they are likely (assuming they are not a troll) to change their actions to conform to the board.

I suggest a forum where people list the posters who are being so obnoxious as to be ignored. Okay, maybe not a forum, but a thread, at least.

I dont have a problem with it as long as people aren't going crazy and ignoring anyone whos views they disagree with.

To be honest, I cant see me using it much but if theres folks out there whos enjoyment of the board is being spoiled by a couple of idiots then I dont really see the harm.

I love this feature. When I first noticed its appearance, I couldn't think of anybody that I wanted to run right out & ignore. :-) But the very next day, one of the very most irritating (to me) posters put up the most irritating (to me) thing he's ever said here. Bingo! I now have a solution that removed him from my Wiener-day. Happy, happy, happy.

I think that would quickly degenerate into little more than a flame war, wouldn't you?

Personally, there's a few people I've ignored, but none of them conservatives from the Politics forum. Nope, not even Pool-Boy. >:)

Huzzah! Good for you. I was pretty much the same. When I saw it had been added I kinda thought 'whatever'. Then I saw a post from someone that often annoys me just due to the sheer repetition of his views.

At around the same time I became curious as to what happened when you ignore somebody. I guess the poor chap was just unlucky (I'm sure my ignoring them has damaged their life irreprably).

I doubt I'll be going on a grand ignoring spree any time soon though. Unless those nasty Bucs fans start getting uppity when football season comes back round. GRRR

Funny thing I noticed bout the ignore function - You can stil see an ignored person's post if someone you're not ignoring quotes it in their post.
