For the first time, I can now say I'm glad Tony is retired, so he will never, EVER have to play in Petco Park.

---
SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Padres' new ballpark will be called PETCO Park after the pet supply company agreed Wednesday to a naming rights deal reportedly worth more than $60 million over 22 years.

PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc., is a nationwide retailer of pet supplies that was founded in San Diego in 1965.

The ballpark is scheduled to be completed by opening day 2004.

"PETCO is a very important and desirable new corporate partner for the Padres for a number of reasons," team owner John Moores said. "We share a commitment to the San Diego community and a focus on family values. If there is any pastime that is as American as baseball, it is caring for the family pets, so this is the perfect partnership for two San Diego institutions."

Nope. Never gonna call it that. Ever.

Jack Murphy Stadium it is.

You know I said the same thing when the closed the Boston Garden but now The Fleet Center is second nature to me. No matter how stupid a name is it will be pushed down on you so much that you will get use to it.

Well, unless you're talking about Invesco Field, Calvin.

I don't know why, but I still call The Continental Airlines Arena "The Byrne Arena". I can't believe that some executive didn't just say, "Hey guys, the money is incredible, but PETCO PARK?" Why don't we hold out for 'Baskin-Robbins Field', 'SuperCuts Stadium', or even 'Jack-In-The-Box Ballpark'???"

Bullitt, agreed. Even though it won't actually BE The Murph, it's still The Murph in my book.

BTW, Cinergy Field, alas, was not demolished. Instead, they tore down Riverfront Stadium. :(

Considering I have season tickets for basketball there, the name is appropriate. Of course, instead of calling it the Dunk, I call it the Dump. But then again, I used to call it the Dump when it was still the Providence Civic Center.
Now, the donut mascot that now is at the turnstiles is disturbing, especially since I enter the place through the bar.

And ironically, they dedicated a statue to Jack Murphy this week. This was apparently the only public appearance this week made by Al Davis.

The statue to Jack Murphy was dedicated in front of Qualcomm Stadium, the former San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Qualcomm will remain on this stadium.

PETA is now protesting the name of the park, saying that animals are mistreated in some of their stores.

- The Gardens in Beentown
- The OLD Tiger Stadium
- The old arena in Chicago
- And of course, my personal favorite, The Forum in Montreal

No buildings can replace these, with or without poor names. At least Soldier's field is being just renivated and torn down.

You know the Boston Garden time was up when they closed it down. A lot of people up here will miss the memories but the place was falling apart. The problem was the they replaced it with the no-frill Fleet Center. Now if they could only build a new Fenway Park. (and I am sure that if/when they do it will still have "Fenway" somewhere in the title).

Yeah, then they can fire him after 2003 and win the series in 2004(since both jobs he's had the team has fired him and won the World Series the next year).
