If ever a senator's words were blown up beyond all proportion, this would be it. Lott, caught up in the moment at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party, makes an off-the-cuff remark of questionable political correctness. In hindsight, he'd probably like to have that comment back - and I think most people on Earth have said something at one time or another that they would like to have back. Lott, realizing his error, apologizes profusely for the comment. In an ideal world, that would be the end of it.

Instead, rabid PC thugs and politicians with their own agenda have fit Lott for Grand Wizard robes. Nobody in Lott's own party - outside of President Bush - has guts enough to back Lott publicly. Lott's second-in-command has publicly requested a new vote on Majority Leader, which I think was done more to see if he could get Lott's job more than out of any true disgust at his comments. The press is sensationalizing this massively - "Trent Lott's Racist Past", now featured in Newsweek, for one - helping to mold public opinion on Lott's entire career, based largely on one statement.

What's your take on this circus?

Steph

I think Lott should be out as Senate Majority leader, but that's mainly because he presided over them losing control of the Senate. Funny, this firestorm didn't erupt when good old Klanster, oops, I mean the preserver of Senate tradition Bobby Byrd kept dropping the N-word on Fox a few months earlier. As always, the first amendment only protects liberal free speech, go against the PC crowd and free speech is ignored.

I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.

I agree that Lott should be out from a political standpoint. And I agree that this has been blown way way WAY out of proportion.

But Lott brought this upon himself. If he didn't have such a proud history of putting his foot in his mouth up to the knee, he wouldn't be having nearly the problems he's had to date. And if he had been a more effective majority leader in the first place, his colleagues may not be calling for his scalp and the President may have thrown him a lifeline.

See, I am not so sure-
I think it was really just a guy trying to say something nice about a guy on his 100th birthday. It was just not very thought out. He never actually said ANYTHING racist, but because Strom was a pro-segregation canditate, conclusions were jumped to.
Honestly, the dude is bending over backwards to apologize. I think he is going a bit far. But when you have the so-called "black leadership" loudly proclaiming that they do not believe a word he says, and that they do NOT accept his apology (while admitting that they did not listen to his actual interviews), and freaks like Spike Lee claiming that Lott is a "card carrying member of the Klan!" (Byrd?) there is something seriously wrong.
As to whether he should step down- for those comments he made, no. Even if he MEANT that he was a segregationist by them, Free Speech is Free Speech. But I have to wonder if he is going to be at all effective with this kind of pressure- so I do not know. But then again, if he caves and steps down, all the Democrats have to do is find one tiny misstatement by any Republican and blow it out of proportion to get the same result whenever they want.
Honestly- this just goes to show that Democrats are at their happiest ,(come on, these guys are HAPPY this happened!)loudest, and most effective when they are villifying, exaggerating, and yelling about something that is not an actual issue. If they would put this kind of passion behind actual sound plans to make this country a better place, I might take them more seriously.

Well, first off, Clinton was NEVER about sex. It was about abuse of power. Sexual Harassment maybe, but lying under oath, filing false affadavits, whoreing out the White House were the real issues- it was the Democrats who tried to make it about a hummer.
And OFB- yeah, Trent Lott was indeed directly responding to that quote- yeah.
Give me one solid bill or ammendment that Trent Lott authored or voted for that endorsed segregation. And NO, anti-affirmitive action is NOT pro-segregation.
The fact is again, the guy said something nice about an old guy at a birthday party from his home state. Redsox makes a good point- why weren't you this up in arms against Byrd when he dropped the N-bomb? Or are actual, legitimate racist comments OK? So if you say something that could be construed as racist, it is worse?
Damn dude- how many times does this guy have to apologize? How long does he have to kiss the so-called black leadership's collective ass before it gets dropped? The guy made a mistake, said something that was in the best of intentions but poorly thought out, and Democrats everywhere are acting as if he called for the return of slavery.
If this does not demonstrate the Liberal need to demonize- I do not know what does...

I think if the GOP is smart they will vote Lott out as majority leader. What he said was stupid and really probably not meant in a racist way. But can anyone explain how this will help the GOP in 2004 in any way? Will it gain them a single vote? Or will it further push the African American community closer to the true racists? Lott should lose his place for saying something very stupid. Sorry, I am a Republican but the GOP has to be more careful about not appearing racist than the Dems. If Mississippi wants to keep Lott as a Senator that is fine. But demote him in the Senate.

the washington post had a nice article about how for the last 20+ years he's vetoed every civil rights bill and has bascially been a racist for his whole political career, and this faux pas wasn't a faux pas and they [the post] aren't surprised at all this attention because it was a long time coming.

DDP: Well, there's this little passage I got memorized, Diamond Dallas 25:17. Sort of fits this occasion:

"The path of the bookerman is beset on all sides by the inequities of the talented, and the tyranny of workrate freaks. Blessed is he, who in the name of tradition and sports entertainment carries the stiffs through the matches of Nitro, for he is truly the workrate's keeper, and the finder of lost quality. And I will lay the smack down upon thee with great vengeance and furious roid rage those who attempt to outwrestle and expose my brothers. And you will know my name as the Bookerman, when I lay my catchphrase upon thee!"

Do you have a link or specifics? I would imagine that most, if not all of those bills he has voted no on were things like "affirmitive action" (which one can argue is a policy that promotes racism), and Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday, which has nothing to de with racisim, and it asll about money. Seriously, voting no on a holiday because of finantial considerations does not mean you are anti-covil rights...

A short, and by no means complete, list from the new Newsweek Magazine:

1978: Lott, then a member of the House, spearheads a sucessful effort to posthumously restore US citizenship to Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

1979: Congressman Lott joins a bipartisan group backing a constitutional ammendment to prohibit busing to desegregate schools. The proposol is rejected by just seven votes.

1981: Lott files a friend of the court brief arguing that Bob Jones University deserves tax breaks because "racial discrimination does not always violate public policy".

1983: Lott votes against Martin Luther King Day. He later tells Southern Partisan Magazine, "We have not done it for a lot of other people that were more deserving".

1984: Lott declares that "the spirit of Jefferson Davis lives in the 1984 Republican platform" and later calls the Civil War "the war of Northern Agression".

1992: While speaking to the Council of Conservative Citizens, a group that has supported segregation, Lott declares, "the people in this room stand for the right principles." Click Here

2002: Lott says that if former Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond had become president in '48 "we wouldn't have had all these problems", repeating a 1980 comment.

Oh come on giving back Jefferson Davis his "citizenship" 120 years after he died isn't racist. Lincoln never would have taken it away in the first place. Johnson was a horrible president (probably one of the worst) who caused more problems with his treatment of the South. You could easily make the case that Johnson's treatment of the former Confederate states led to the founding of groups like the KKK and the rest. I don't think it's that simple but it was one of many factors.
Busing isn't really working. It wastes a lot of kids time spent on buses rather than learning anything. They should improve all schools and let any kid who lives in the district attend. I understand the concept and they mean well but the application is very inefficient.
I agree about Bob Jones University. It shouldn't get tax breaks. Of course I don't think any religious college should.
Voting againts MLK day is smart. 5 million federal, state, county, and city employees earn a lot of money in one day. His statemet though was stupid.
His 84 statement was very stupid. Jefferson Davis was a big believer in state's rights and a smaller federal govt but it could be taken wrong. The "War of Northern Aggression" is still a somewhat common phrase in the south. Of course not politician should ever say it.
Talking to the CCC was dumb.
His Thurmond/Dixiecrat statement was very dumb.
In short I think Lott might be racist. Not in an overt way. But even if he isn't he isn't that smart. He says dumbass things that the #3 man in the GOP can't say. If he was just a senator from MS that is MS's problem. But as majority leader he represents the whole party.

One of my college professors(who was black) said we should rename MLK's B-Day "Heroes Day" so people can honor whichever hero they wish to do so to, whteher it be MLK, Jefferson Davis, or Mr. Whipple.

Though I won't defend the Davis portion, Well....it was the War of Northern Aggression. The South exercised their right to remove themselves from the Union peacefully, did so and others joined them. Then the war started...

I just can't criticize him for voting against King day and saying the South had a point. Besides, I'm willing to bet that the Democrats have some doozies in their closet.

Perhaps the Democrats have a good idea about Senators leaving office if they consider the approval of a segregationist vital. Thus, Ted Kennedy, time to leave the Senate because you trekked down to Alabama to share a podium with George Wallace on July 4th, 1973. I mean, fair is fair. And Bobby Byrd, Senate laundry says they are having trouble keeping up with the bleach you need for your sheets.

I can't believe that Republicans, the party of MASTER mud-slingers Lee Atwater and Karl Rove, are crying because they are being "demonized" by another party. This is a party that routinely winks at its prejudiced base with campaign ads like Willie Horton and code words like "welfare queens" to give the not-so-subtle suggestion that lazy blacks are responsible for the nation's ills.

If Trent Lott wasn't advocating segregationism when he said we should've voted for Strom Thurmond (and I'm not saying he was), then what the hell did he mean by the comments (and he's said it more than once)??

Yes, the PC police are out in full force and yes, they do get carried away over shit like this. But Lott's given them more than enough rope. Same way Clinton gave his overzealous ("It's really about abuse of power, not a blowjob") enemies enough ammunition to ruin him with.

It's probably a good thing that this came out. Probably just a slip of the tounge on Lott's part, but he's just speaking for his nostalgic "sure miss the good ol' days" contingency that the Republicans have swept under the rug for too long. It's an insult to any moderate Republican who has to get lumped in with that group.

Here's the problem with that. Because what you say about the PC police being out and force and Lott giving them the rope is true....

BUT and this is the key, the PC police did Absolutely nothing when:

- Robert Byrd(the last Klansman left in Congress I do beleive)used a racial epithet during an interview.
- 60 Minutes reporter Mike Wallace said on tape that minorities couldnt fill out bank applications because they were too busy "eating watermelon and tacos"
- Jesse Jackson referred to NYC as "Hymietown"
- Al Sharpton and Tawana Brawley.
- Harry Bellafonte's ludicrous "plantation" comment about Colin Powell, followed up by;
- John Conyers supporting Bellafonte's ascertation.

It's called a double standard and frankly Democrats should really look in the mirror before pointing fingers. After all, it was the Democrats in the US Senate that held up the Civil Rights ACt in 1964; it was Republicans who supported it and got it through.
