Once my roommate and I broke down and ordered the NBA League Pass, I became more interested in how the announcers in some of these cities talked about their teams. I love getting to hear Marv Albert do Knick games on the MSG Network. Getting to follow the Lakers is a great thing (not as great so far this year, but things will improve) as well.

There is one set of announcers that drive me up the wall with their overly biased commentary. That's right, the Boston Celtics have the worst announcers in basketball. The color guy (Tommy somethingorother) is just horrible, spouting stupid catchphrases and lambasting EVERY single ref call that goes against his beloved Celts. Now I know that all announcers are a little biased when it comes to their teams, but the Celtic announcers go overboard.

Man, and I thought the Sixer announcers were bad (well, actually they are, but Boston still has them beat).

First, Marv and Walt 'Clyde' Frasier are the most annoying pair of announcers in sports history.
Now, onto Tommy Heinsohn and Mike Gorman (with 10 guest appearances from Bob Cousy). No Shit, Heinsohn's biased, so was Johnny Most. Heinsohn only won title's as a player and a coach for the Celtics, and has been part of the organization for 45 years. Oh yeah, Tommy is a Hall of Famer (and of course, Cousy is a god). After the crap Gorman and Heinsohn had to put up with for a 5 year period in the 90's, I don't blame them for being like this. As for the 'I Love Waltaaaa' comments, well, it was better when McCarty was the 12th man on the team and only played in garbage time.

(fist bump with JWStorm) Actually, the Hornets weren't half bad. They still aren't. As for their new announcers in NO... well... meh. They could be worse, but they're not that good.

Funny you should mention Tommy Heinshoun, on SportsCenter, they played some of his commentary, and he was ripping the officials, calling them stupid etc. Celtics lost that game.

Oh yeah, Walt Frazier rules.

Listening to Walt 'Clyde' Frazier is like listening to Dingbat when he has his thesaurus out.
As for Tommy Heinsohn, I've watched him call games for basically my entire life. I've never seen him as pissed off as he was during the postgame show following the Celtics/Suns game. I actually was waiting for him to get ejected at some point last night. This is the final confirmation that the Celtics are back.

Any Pacers fan worth hir salt will be more than happy to tell you that Bill Walton is one of the worst announcers of them all. Also seems to be one of the biggest Pacers-haters in the universe, although God only knows why. Maybe he lost a game of H-O-R-S-E to Reggie, and he's still bitter about it. Either way, the guy needs to chill the hell out a little.

For the life of me I cannot figure out if Bill Walton is just plain ignorant or trying ot be a jerk while announcing.

From the infamous Wrestleline SS interview:

DTD: If you were to make changes in WCW, if you were in charge and not Ric Flair, what would they be?

SS: I'd get rid of all the old guys, and push the talent that has waited to get the push. The things they are doing, it's back in the 1980s. It's just bad, man. Flair doesn't even deserve to be on the show. You've got to get rid of all the old guys. Like what Vince did, they started pushing guys. Nobody knew who The Rock was 2 years ago. He made The Rock. Now The Rock just did Saturday Night Live. You've got to start with the young talent, talent people can relate to. Who are we trying to relate to if we've got a 50 year old man out there? Are we trying to relate, so a 50 year people and above will go out and buy a f*cking little toy? That ain't gonna happen. It's a f*cking joke.

Does it remind you of any show in particular?

Bill Walton is the Kurt Angle of Basketball Announcers. You love to hate him, even if you haven't admited the "love" part to yourselves yet. He's the heel, and he plays it well.

How can you hate on any man nicknamed "Clyde?"

Everyone loves to hate Kurt Angle, but most people do admit the love. Myself, I've thought of some pretty ingenious and evil things to do to Bill Walton. So it's not the same thing.

I like Vitale as an announcer but can't stand his verbal BJ's for Duke and the other big programs while completely ignoring the small schools.

Vitale is great and at least sounds like he wants to be out there. Stockton and of course Walton try to sound like they are above the game and that announcing isn't important to them. I have to admit though, that I sometimes feel for Walton, who just gets shitted on by every announcer they put him with (with good reason most of the time mind you).

Tommy Heinsohn is, and always shall be, my idol ... His outburst during the Celtics/Suns game was absolutely justified, as that was the single WORST display of NBA officiating that I have ever seen (even putting aside my hometown bias towards the men in Green).

You cannot tell me that these refs were not sticking it to the Celts after Tony Battie kicked the ball into one of their brother's behind in the previous game ... That took exception to that, and (being the jerks that they are) let that Stoudamire rookie knock Paul Pierce's two front teeth out without blowing the whistle. THEN, they have the unmitigated gall to call a flagrant foul on Vin Baker at the other end of the court, when he barely touched one of the Suns' players.

An absolutely disgusting display by the officials, and I was hoping against hope that Heinsohn would jump out of his announcing chair, run onto the court, and start swinging (like when he told Wilt Chamberlain to "bring his lunch" during their playing days) ... That would have been sweet.

This official needs to go home to his wife, because nobody loves him here!

If Tommy had only set himself on fire that night, he would have achieved a full Johnny Most.
As for the mental midget Chris Rose on Best Damn Sports Show with his comments on Tommy: Maybe your Cadavers could try playing defense for once before you comment on any NBA Team.
As for Lisa Guerrero: Chick is dead, deal with it. And, don't try to make it seem like your intelligent, because their are enough good stories about her floating around from her days as a New England Patriots cheerleader in the early 90's to provide much material.

The ex-athletes on the show said Tommy was right. Cleveland boy Rose said Tommy was a joke, and its about time the Celts got screwed by the officials. Lisa Guerrero broke off into her Chick Hearn was the greatest person who walked the face of the earth spiel, and was completely unbiased whenever he called a game.

My favorite performance by an NBA announcer has to be Neil Funk on Bulls Radio (WMVP-Chicago) about five years ago. It was the season opener, and he promised about five times in the first minute of the game that he would be a lot easier on the refs that year. By the second quarter the "Oh, come on!"s were starting to slip out, and in the second half he probably berated the officials more times than in the playoffs the previous season. Of course, the ridiculous thing is the Bulls were still In the Company of Jordan at that point, so his bitching was pointless. They were going to win no matter what.

I've got no problem with announcers bitching at referees, assuming that a bad call was undeniably made. If the announcer just gripes at the refs because their team is getting its ass kicked legitimately, then their complaints don't hold water.
