This episode of NXT is dedicated to the memory of The American Dream, Dusty Rhodes. I know that's not any different from every other piece of WWE programming this week, but still, if there's one show that really ought to be dedicated to the man, it's this one. If you haven't had a chance to check out the special on the Network, you should take a look; there's a bunch of really nice stuff from the NXT wrestlers. I don't know how they could ever replace him down at Full Sail.

Okay, enough of that. We've actually got a huge main event tonight in the form of Samoa Joe vs. Kevin Owens. But before that, last week we were promised a six man tag. Enzo, Cass, and Carmella are out first to do their thing. Cass starts to spell something out for us, but I guess we'll never know what it was because he gets cut off by the entrance of Blake, Murphy, and Alexa Bliss. Nice. I like the entrance routine Blake, Murphy, and Bliss have put together. It's very clean. This match falls apart almost immediately, as all six participants start brawling with each other. The champs get sent outside the hard way, but when we come back from break, they manage to get the upper hand on Enzo. With order restored, it's not looking too good for the boys (and girl) from Jersey, until Enzo manages to get a hot tag on Carmella. I'll say this about her - she's still got a long ways to go, but she's improved tremendously since she started. She's certainly good enough to be a valet who occasionally gets brought into the ring. Anyhoo, Alexa Bliss tags in Wesley Blake, but that brings in big Cass, so that's pretty much it for this contest. Cass cleans house and then sets up Enzo for the Rocket Launcer and the win.
Match Rating: Realest Guys In The Room.

We get a quick recap of what happened in Cena/Owens II to set up some comments from Samoa Joe. Joe says that KO relies on intimidation, but Joe doesn't like that, because "Intimidation is the tactic of the weak. Intimidation is the tactic of the cowardly. Intimidation is the tactic of a man who DOESN'T WANT TO FIGHT." Damn. Take that, Kevin Owens. It's been a little while, I don't remember Joe being this good of a promo.

We've got part one (of two) of a video retrospective on Finn Balor next. It's really nice - all of these things always are - and it concentrates on his early years. First off, it covers his real name (Fergal Devitt, although I suspect anyone reading this already knew that) and his family life growing up. Highlights here are young Fergal in a Y2J t-shirt, and then later a Taz(!?) t-shirt. It moves on to cover his training Becky Lynch (and there's some really cute stuff in that) and stops at the point where he takes the offer to go work at New Japan. If this was "Handsome European Gentleman," I assume that part two will be "Anime Demon-Fighting Wrestler." We'll see if I'm right!

Hey, it's Charlotte! We haven't really seen much from her in a little bit, so she's out for a tune-up against Some Jobber. Charlotte's pulled some classic Flair-isms into her routine (like the hair-slick). For her own part, the jobber gets in token offense, which is mostly UNoffensive, right up until she goes for a crossbody block. She is way too low to hit Charlotte's chest, so the whole thing just falls apart. Charlotte seems to think that that's enough out of the jobber, so she rolls her up in the Charlotte's Web! You don't beat jobbers with roll-ups, though, so instead Charlotte nails the swinging neckbreaker (so pretty!), her spear, and then the Figure 8.
Match Rating: Squash City: Population 1(One) Jobber.

Backstage we catch up with (ugh)Dana Brooke. I don't know what she said here, because I couldn't get over the fact that she WON'T LOOK AT THE CAMERA! I found it so distracting.

Main event time already? Wow, they're giving these guys about 20 minutes. Nice. Champ enters first, but I'm going to let it pass this time because it's a non-title match. Joe's still coming out to the funk, and that needs to get fixed yesterday. KO goes outside at the bell, planning to stall like he always does, but Joe follows him right out. Instead of brawling, Joe just gets right up in his face until Owens backs down and gets back in the ring. They lock up, and Joe backs Owens into a corner. He then delivers what I can only describe as E. Honda's Hundred Hand Slap. Joe then nails an enziguri, and starts grinding his boot into KO's face. At this point, I have to admit I am really, really enjoying watching somebody shut Kevin Owens up. Owens does eventually recover, though, nailing the Cannonball and the senton. With Joe down on the mat, it's chinlock time! In fact, the crowd actually starts chanting "chinlock city," and I kind of love that. It's a great chinlock - Joe legit starts turning beet red in it. Joe eventually powers out and hits a senton of his own. It's the go-to move for big guys everywhere! He also nails a big jumping knee strike. Joe feel that it's time for the Muscle Buster, but KO's having none of that. He blocks it, but walks right into a huge urinage! Owens goes outside to recover, and Joe follows him out. It's a trap though, as Owens posts Joe, and tries to follow up with the Apron Bomb! Joe saves himself from that fate, and they continue to brawl on the outside. The ref tries to restore some order and get these guys back in the ring, which I appreciate because the refs have really been letting things slide out of control a lot lately. I immediately find out why most of the refs let this stuff go when he gets absolutely clobbered in between the two wrestlers. That's enough to get this one thrown out - No Contest.
Match Rating: I Am A Lot Less Disappointed By This Finish Than I Would Have Expected.
Pulling a No Contest isn't enough to stop these two, though, and they keep fighting. The ref squad comes out, but it's as effective as you'd think, so security comes out. Quick aside, security is obviously a bunch of Performance Center guys, and I like the (wholly imaginary) idea that working security at NXT shows is part of paying your dues. Anyhoo, that's finally enough to stop the fight, but Kevin Owens decided to deck a few security guys on his way out because he's a dick.

Well, it looks like we'll get at least one more match between these two before KO heads off to RAW forever, so that's pretty exciting. I thought this was a really good first contest, and went a long way toward establishing a dynamic between these two powerful fighters who just don't like each other very much.

So, head's-up: Next week, I'm going on vacation (to Orlando, actually, but there won't be any time for a stop at Winter Park, I'm sad to say). That means I won't be able to do a write-up of next week's show. If anybody wants to jump on that, they can feel free.

Hot damn, the Finn Balor profile was AWESOME. And there was a Grado sighting on WWE TV.

Solid show. Other than the intro, Samoa Joe's music is awful, though.

Agreed on both accounts.

The immediate thought I had watching the Balor Profile was there's no way he doesn't walk out NXT champion on the July 4 Tokyo show, and between Owens/Balor, Neville/Jericho, and Lesnar/Kofi, I'm really looking forward to the show.

I can't think of the last time a woman blushed and stuttered talking about me like Becky did for Finn. That was kawaii as hell. Here's hoping part 2 is about when he made a deal with the Oni demon inside of him. I hope it involves the camera crew asking about it and he goes from well-mannered to physically irritable and angry. I want Jekyll and Hyde.

I haven't heard Samoa Joe cut a promo in years either. I still remember the feud he had with Scott Steiner were they talked about each other with such venom for weeks it felt like one of them was gonna get murdered in the actual match. Also I'm watching Joe in WWE today and thinking "if only you showed up before Royal Rumble 2014..."

Not only is Dana looking at her lines offscreen but her mouth makes a lot of clicky/smacky noises. Which I'm usually excited with a woman having a smacky-sounding mouth but not when cutting promos on a wrestling program.

I like Joe's music, just not for him to come out to. Something with a bit more of a hardcore hip hop or grime beat would be perfect. Also watching Joe v. Owens made me realize I don't really understand Cardio conditioning as well as I thought. Let's go agile fat guys!

Cole: "Yeah, thanks to Kane. You should buy Kane a Rolex watch for what he did for you."
Rollins: "Oh don't be silly, Kane doesn't wear watches."

The rumor was that Itami was going to be their guy going forward until he messed up his shoulder. I really like the fact that Balor was plan B, but they're going all-in on him. He's getting as big a push as it is possible to give a guy right now, and you're right - I can't see any way he doesn't take the strap off of Kevin Owens on the 4th.

This week's"jobber" is Cassie.

Unpopular opinion - Nikki Bella is a better worker than Charlotte. Name and presentation is making people think otherwise, but Charlotte has gotten real clumsy looking in the ring again.

Owens-Joe was about what I expected. It's just enough to build on down the road.

I see why you feel this way, but I disagree. Nikki has the same 2-2.5 star match with anyone she wrestles, other than the black hole that is her sister. It's consistent, it's inoffensive, it's never memorable or remarkable, it's just there. Charlotte's bad matches are bad. But when she finds a good partner, she consistently produces 3.5+ work. I'll take 20 sloppy Charlotte matches with the promise of one 4 star in the mix rather than the consistently mediocre Nikki. As fans, I think we expect Charlotte to be the female version of her father and produce 4+ with a broomstick. But that's not her (yet?).
