You know, it wasn't without REASON that this game was almost blacked out locally. Nobody wants to pay $160 a seat to go watch the Vikings blow it...well, nobody who isn't a fan of the Eagles, anyway.
I think you can ask anybody who follows the Vikings - tonight, as the great Dennis Green once mused in a different situation, they were who we thought they were. But unlike Green's Cardinals with the Bears, the Eagles did NOT let 'em off the hook, despite the offense failing to come up with a touchdown for over three and a half quarters. Normally that won't get you a win, but again...we are talking about Brad Childress' Vikings. Their inability to run out the clock in the first half was an ominous sign that the real Vikings could emerge at any time, and sure enough, T-Jack could no longer stand up to the Eagle defense when it was wearin' down time. Those were some awful, AWFUL passes in the fourth quarter.
Peterson deciding to try for the 12 point touchdown by running the kick out of the end zone and getting dumped at the 10 was just the cherry on top.
Was this just enough to keep Childress around another year? Nobody wants him - or perhaps nobody but Zygi.
I thought the worst job by Childress was in the 1st quarter when they stopped the Eagles on 3rd and I believe 9 at the 26, and a hold was called on the Eagles. Common sense states you take the penalty to knock the Eagles out of field goal range. Natually, as a bad head coach, Childress declines the penalty and it is a virtual chip shot for the Eagles to take a 3-0 lead. The idiocy at the end of the 1st half was just to be expected. I so wanted Peterson to fumble on his first touchdown run when he held out the ball to taunt the Eagles defender. For a guy with fumbling issues in a playoff game that was stupidity. The best hope the Vikings had was if Jackson had been hurt on the block on his Pick 6 late in the 1st half. Now, instead of the Cardinals at Giants Stadium in January, it is the Eagles. I'm not happy.

I missed this, but my Eagles fan friend was more than happy to point it out.
He also LOST HIS MIND pointing out that the Eagles hadn't even attempted a screen, up to and including prior to the TD play.

Yet again, I'm happy Brian Westbrook plays for my team.
There are quite a few things the Birds will need to correct (the Giants are a lot more balanced than the Vikings, and field goals are not going to cut it), but I'll take it and run with it. Props to the Vikings defense, who held their own (other than that Westbrook screen pass) even as their offense abandoned them in the 2nd half.

This was like watching the good (well, decent) Eagles vs. the bad Eagles. Poor clock management, reliance on screens, a mobile quarterback who often forgets he is a mobile quarterback, a running back who is unable to carry his team alone, and an unrelenting defense pretty much could describe either team this season. I commented to my friend that if the jersey colors were switched, and the Eagles were struggling all game while down two points, it wouldn't be surprising and I'm sure its something we've seen this year.
I'm glad the Eagles won. I'm hoping that they won't get cocky since they managed to beat the Giants without Jacobs a few weeks ago. Still, I had written this team off after the Washington loss, so win-or-loss next week, the last two weeks (ESPECIALLY last week) have been fun.

I think the logic there was that you'd rather take the loss of down and the field goal, then run the risk of giving them another play to make the first down and keep pushing for a touchdown.
I feel bad for all you Vikings fans, though. You sound like us Eagles fans after the Cincinatti tie.

I didn't think of it at the time because I spent most of the game in s state of perpetual fear, but that pretty much sums it up perfectly. The Vikings even sucked on special teams in punt coverage, although kickoff returns tend to be where the Eagles screw up when they're playing badly.
McNabb quietly had a very good game for the most part (dumb INT aside). Not many points from the O, but he did a good job moving the ball when we were backed up, and with no running game to speak of as well.
Avant is fast becoming something of a cult hero. The man just catches anything thrown his way and he can take a hit while he's doing it too. See also Celek, B.

I'd still like to see Baskett and Buckhalter be more involved, but I've been saying that most of the season so I doubt anything will change there now.

To offer a half-hearted defence of Childress, prior to the snap the commentary (we had Aikman and.......I'm drawing a blank - blame old age) went something like "The Vikings might try a screen here to see if they can get one big play". Then after it fell incomplete it was all "Gee, what the hell were they thinking there?!".
The man was open and Jackson should've made the pass. If he thought he couldn't complete it he should've tucked it and taken a sack then run out the clock. Of course you could argue Childress should've known he had an inexperienced QB and not put him in that posession.
Oh, and one rant on the officiating. The "sack" called on McNabb that knocked the Iggles out of FG range was 100% bullshit. Intentional grounding possibly (though not really) but to call a sack on a QB like McNabb there is utter garbage. Heck if that's a sack then David Tyree is still unknown to the world and the Pats went undefeated. Worst of all, unless there was something up with the sound quality on our feed there was no fricking whistle. Bullshit call, though thankfully it didn't cost us.

Well, in his defense he did lead a team with Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson to a division title and the playoffs. That said, he certainly does have his issues as a coach. Wasn't Tarvaris his pick as QB of the future? That's as bad of an idea as Herm Edwards picking Brodie Croyle as his QB. Maybe they could trade him to the Twins, since every pass I've seen him throw is a low slider or a rising fastball.
Gotta give myself credit, I came pretty close on the final score(of course, that'd be great if I picked the right team to win). I'm mostly just disappointed for Jared Allen and that D. They were pretty much abandoned in the 2nd half.

I backed this play up and watched it about ten times before I realized that Fox would in fact replay it about 15 times. It was close to a choke-slam, but Clemons landed on top of him. I was impressed that not only did Jackson make it back in the game but was able to put together an impressive scoring drive right after. He politely waited until the 4th quarter to lose it.

After watching Leroy's video, though, I can't see where it made sense for the flag to come in for excessive celebration. Samuel just threw his arms up. That's excessive now?

It looked like when they cut away to Jackson on the turf, they were either about to use the ball as a prop, or there was a group celebration.

That's NFL reffing for ya. I'm not going to complain like others who say this is the NO Fun League (it still must be fun if it's the most watched sport in the country), but between this and Wes Welker's snow angel (you get fined $15,000 for THAT?), the refs sure are becoming nitpicking as of late.

One of the guys on KFAN said it most eloquently yesterday; did the Vikings get into teh playoffs because of Childress or in spite of Brad Childress. I'd go with the latter.
