Good! LET'S GO
PICK OF THE WEEK TCM Spotlight: Charlie Chan Collection (Dark Alibi / Dangerous Money / The Trap / The Chinese Ring) (The W at Amazon) (1946) (1947) Yes! More Chan NEW to DVD! "The Chinese Ring" is Roland Winters' debut as Chan; the other three star Sidney Toler. Three have Mantan Moreland if you like that old-timey racism as well! With this release, ALMOST EVERY old Chan film has made it onto DVD!
Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy) (UK, 2010) OK, technically not a movie - Eric Idle and John Du Prez' "comic oratorio, inspired by The Life of Brian" filmed October 2009 at its Royal Albert Hall (and only European) performance - requisite guest turns by Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, Neil Innes and Carol Cleveland and we all wonder what John Cleese was doing that night that he couldn't show Not the Messiah [Blu-ray]
The Cry of the Owl (UK/Canada/Germany/France, 2009) Paddy Considine, Julia Stiles - remake of 1987 French film
Jim Henson's Dog City: The Movie (direct to video, 1989) Pilot for what became a FOX series - Rowlf guides you through the seamy underbelly of (Muppet) canine life during the noirish 1930s
BIG GAY COLLECTION OF THE WEEK Cinema Pride Collection (Amazon.com Exclusive) "The 10 films included in The Cinema Pride Collection reflect just how far the LGBT movement has evolved over the past four decades. These films offer viewers an unforgettable journey into our collective past." - Jeremy Kinsder, The Advocate, as quoted on the cover. I guess we know which kinda "pride," then. Includes: The Children's Hour; La Cage Aux Folles; Boys Don't Cry; The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Bent; Kissing Jessica Stein; The Birdcage; Imagine Me & You; The Object of My Affection and My Beautiful Laundrette
WARNER RERELEASES SOME STUFF THIS WEEK Caddyshack (Ws Aniv Dub Rmst Sub Ac3 Dol Ecoa) (1980) Don't think there's anything new for the 30th anniversary, but they needed a new DVD to go with the... Caddyshack [Blu-ray] ...premiere on Blu-ray (ex-HD DVD title, you see)
La Sangre Iluminada / Enlightened Blood (Mexico, 2007) More info and trailer at Distrimax (distrimaxinc.com) (scroll down... it's down there) El Guapo / Handsom & Dangerous (Mexico, 2007) More info and trailer at Distrimax Oveja Negra / Two for the Girl (Mexico, 2009) I spent way too much time at their website making the black sheep fly around Even more info and trailer at Distrimx Rebeldes Sin Causa (4pc) (Sub) Adolescentes y Rebeldes, Sí desearás la mujer de tu narco, Luces de Nueva York and I think it says Chilango Huango - Distrimax Amores Infieles (3pc) I love that they write their descriptions in English and that English is clearly not their first language: "The whole idea of what 'faithfulness' towards a partner meant in the last few years have become somewhat 'passé' when this great package was conceived the idea was to just show men and women alike being kind of not faithful you can come up with your own conclusions while this people just party on." And yet....NO SPANISH DESCRIPTION! Movies are Ladies' Night (yes, it's in Spanish, made in Mexico, but its title is "Ladies' Night" - hey, it happens), Dos Abrazos and Cansada de Besar Sapos - and it goes without saying that there's more info at Distrimax Close Road I think it may be "Closed Road" but it doesn't matter - NEITHER title is in the IMDb
The Harder They Come (Dol) (Jamaica, 1972) Jimmy Cliff - rescheduled from 5/11 Stigma (1972) Philip Michael Thomas (!), Harlan Poe Cycles (2001) Creek (The Unfortunate - direct to video, 2007) - MySpace Drifter (Netherlands, 2007) Cameron Daddo, Darcy Halsey, Janora McDuffie, Ryan Alosio
Bloodlock (2008) Ashley Gallo, Debra Gordon, Gregg Biamonte, Karen Fox - and I'd like to say "hi" to any of those four who happen to be Googling themselves ending up here Metal Man (direct to video, 2008) Leah Grimsson, Reggie Bannister - see previous listing, apply same joke
Cryptic (2009) "What if you called your own phone...and you answered?" I'd probably be all "'sup." Fear the Forest (Unrated) (2009) The Hiding (2009) Toe To Toe (2009) Even more info at Strand (strandreleasing.com) Women's Studies (2010) Horror - but with a title like "Women's Studies," you probably already figured that out
Family Matters: The Complete First Season (ABC, 1989-90) Lots of people are super excited that this series is finally coming out on DVD. I am...not one of those people
The A-Team: The Complete Series (Limited Edition Box Set) (NBC, 1983-7) 25 discs in an AWESOME "van" package - not a bad preorder price, too! (Assuming you haven't already bought the individual season sets...but who HASN'T? Am I right?)
Nip/Tuck: The Sixth and Final Season (FX, 2009-10) For some reason, tv.com lists this as Seasons 6 & 7, but whichever it is, there's 19 episodes of it
Ghostwriter: Season One (PBS, 1992-3) I think this was one of those I was way too old to get into but my mom would tape for her students so I'd end up unwittingly catching bits and pieces of it - kinda fun - more info (but no trailer, boo!) at Shout! Factory (shoutfactorystore.com)
Rappin With the Rickster Highlights of Ricky Powell's 1990s cable access show combined with new footage shot for this release - I couldn't find an official page about the release, but in its place I offer this interview of Powell from the Village Voice (blogs.villagevoice.com)
WWE: The Undertaker's Deadliest Matches What's REALLY deadly is attempting to sit through all three discs in one sitting - check out special deals and maybe better prices at WWE Shop (wweshop.com)
SHUT UP AND (FLY) FISH This week we have a God-awful number of releases and/or rereleases from BENNETT-WATT ENTERTAINMENT (bennett-watt.com). They all fall under the arena of fishing, or travelling (to fish, or maybe not), or tying flies for FUTURE fishing. And there are a few that don't fall under ANY of these categories. But they're all together now - and PLEASE feel free to totally skip down to the next horizontal line.
HOOKED ON FLY TYING and occasionally, "The NEW Hooked on Fly Tying!" Again, I didn't bother to list instructors - if you're that into this, you're already clicked over to their website (bennett-watt.com), I hope.
Whew! Pardon MY manners, but we are out...for now, anyway. Wanna talk about it? The "Reply" link is RIGHT THERE. Otherwise, come back later and we'll see if all those Bennett-Watt titles get pulled JUST before 6/8 or not. Whee!
By the way, if you would like the quickest updates on these threads as they're posted, please point your feed reader and/or subscribe to our NEW RSS feed at http://the-w.com/rss/DVD.rss !
SOCIAL NETWORK's script blew TRUE GRIT's away, and I say that as a lifelong Coen fan. It takes something spcial to make a group of nerds squabbling into an energetic, grippping drama. And FIncher deserved that statuette.
