Good to see Seattle taking care of their ace. Overall, if you're an M's fan, you have to be pretty much ecstatic with how this offseason has gone.
Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.
Trading for Cliff Lee in exchange for pennies - Check Simultaneously bolster your lineup AND derail your #1 division rival by signing Chone Figgins - Check Sucker the Red Sox into taking Adrian Beltre off your hands - Check Lock up Felix Hernandez long-term - Check
If the M's don't take the AL West and make a lot of noise in the playoffs this year, something is seriously, SERIOUSLY wrong on the managerial end.

Good luck getting that theme song out of your head
There's nothing here that says that this isn't just a short-term deal that buys out his remaining arbitration years. It could well be something that they agree to now while trying to lock him up for the real long haul.
As an aside, Beltre is an amazing defensive third baseman whose bat--last year aside--managed to be league average despite playing in a park that is terrible for hitters like him. The Red Sox were hardly "suckered" into signing him.

If they had gone the JD Drew route and given him the 5/65 Boras was initially asking, that would have been suckering. 1 year isn't a bad risk, especially since they've shown repeatedly they'll eat money. As for the Mariners, I'm not in love with their offense, but the pitching staff would have to absolutely collapse for them not to be in the race throughout. The loyalty to a faded Griffey might be their weakness though.

Adrian Beltre was a free agent. He wasn't on the Mariners' hands.
Now, Carlos Silva, on the other hand...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

He's a grown man, who had a drink (or several). If he loses his job over it, or people's respect over it, it's silly and a shame. Its the off season, he isn't missing work, isn't missing games, isn't showing up hung over.
