Adam Schefter (twitter.com) has reported that Mike Shanahan has signed a 5 year contract to be head coach and executive VP of football operations, having final say over GM Bruce Allen.

It's a prestige job, so I understand him wanting it, but they need a lot of help, especially if Jason Campbell leaves. (Not that Campbell is lighting the world on fire, but he's performing ably in an awful spot for a qb.)

EDIT: Schefter (twitter.com) also adds that Kyle Shanahan is leaving the Texans to act as OC for the Redskins.

I really don't think that the Redskins are as bad as their record indicates. Having a lame duck coach for more than half a season, and some injuries slowed them down.
They're in a tough division, but they can't really control that.

I think it's a good move.

Awesome! The 'Skins hired a coach that was last seen blowing a three-game division lead with three games left in the regular season. With that glaring stat in mind, tying him up for five years sounds monumentally dumb.

I will say that Shanahan did a great job with Jay Cutler in his rookie year, so maybe lightning will strike twice if the 'Skins take Sam Bradford in the draft and send Jason Campbell packing.

But that glaring '08 stat, yeesh. Marty Schottenheimer was virtually blackballed from football for a lot less than that.

Marty Schottenheimer never won back-to-back Super Bowls (not to mention Shanahan's ring as offensive coordinator with San Francisco in 1994). I'm not saying that means Shanahan's golden for the rest of his career, but his resume is considerably more stacked than Marty's, and in considerably less time.

Yeah, the Skins actually aren't as shabby as a lot of people seem to think. With less injuries and a slightly easier division they could've easily had a few more Ws. Even with all their injuries they still played some very good teams close (lest we forget they were a competent kicker away from ending the Saints unbeaten run) until chucking it in during the last couple of weeks of the season.

I actually feel sorry for Campbell, at least as much as I can feel sorry for any Redskin. He's got some talent but hasn't always had the best WRs to work with, and by the end of the season their O-line wasn't even bothering to pretend they knew how to pass block.

Shanahan's a good coach. The East should be even more of a slugfest next year.

Pardon? He pulled Plummer with a 7-4 record in a desperate attempt to jump start the team. Cutler had no great games, and they finished 9-7. I still don't understand what he was doing.

He also split apart the locker room of a two-time Super Bowl champ by messing with the starting QB situation a week before the regular season started in 1999.

Redskin fans should get used to a smug coach who talks about the abundance of "talent" on his team and their ensuing mediocre record. I'm thinking he'll last two years in DC.

But on the other hand....say Shanahan learned something during his off year. He has something to prove and doesn't want the "only won with Elway" moniker attached to him anymore. So he adjusts his schemes and methods as the Redskins turn into a playoff force. Hey...stranger stuff has happened (see: Dick Vermeil in St. Louis).

Whichever team ends up with Jason Campbell is going to get a very solid quarterback. He put up pretty good numbers this season amidst all of the craziness on the coaching staff....think of what he could do with some stability.

Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

As someone who has watched every game of the Jason Campbell era, I say goodbye and good luck to him. He's the very definition of vanilla. He's afraid to throw the long ball, he shows no emotion, and just stays average. He'll win you a big game or two and then he'll stink it up against a team you should beat. He is Even Steven. He'll throw a pretty pass or two and then get sacked from the blindside. Trust me, it's not all the offensive line's fault.

Sounds tailor-made for the Rams. I'm sure they'd KILL for Even Steven at this point.

If I were you, I'd be thrilled. Petrino isn't going to try to stuff Vick into a certain type of system _ he's going to build the system around Vick.
