EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan retired Monday after a 15-year NFL career with the New York Giants that was capped by a Super Bowl title four months ago.
The 36-year-old Strahan, the NFL's active leader in sacks, informed the front office in the morning without telling his coaches and teammates.
"I'm just finding out about it; let me get organized," coach Tom Coughlin said after a team workout.
Strahan is walking away from a $4 million salary for the final year of his contract. He has long said he wants a job in television.
Maybe he'll get a job on NBC and work with Tiki, just to make things REALLY fun.
This is the second high-profile retirement after Brett Favre this offseason. These things like to come in threes, so maybe there's another one in the works?

Don't be so sure; Favre only retired as a favor to Strahan.

My money's on Warren Sapp!
Good time for Strahan to retire. They're in arguably the toughest division in the league, and short of repeating, next season would probably have been a let down compared to this, so better to go out on top.

And the Giants do have a history of letting up after championship, or near-championship years (6-9 in 1987, 8-8 in 1991, 7-9 in 2001, no playoff trip in any of those years).
Like other people said, it's not totally unexpected, and there's not going to be a huge hole, between Umenyiora, Tuck and Kiwanuka, I think there's not going to be a huge dropoff in linebacker/defensive line production. He's going to go into TV, probably with Fox, from what I'm hearing, and he's going out with a championship. I'd say he did pretty good.

He already did.

Not only that, but the D-line looks to be in pretty good shape going forward, between Umenyiora, Tuck, et al. Probably more of a matter of him making the right move last year to come back for one more round, if you ask me.
Ah, my jovial sarcasm is lost on you. My crime was one of cruddy quips, not ignorance

That too. But Tuck was pretty productive playing at DT in passing downs, which Strahan's presence allowed him to do. With them already losing Kawika Mitchell their front seven will be a little less fearsome this year.
Course you could argue that's like saying the Pats' offence will be a little less awesome for the loss of Stalworth...

And he did it short 'n sweet too, with a simple posting on his website saying "I'm done!".
As far as Strahan goes, I'll miss him as a great DE for the G-men. And he's going out on top, which except for John Elway, I can't think of a HOF'er to got to leave as a Super Bowl champion. That said, I really won't miss him otherwise. He comes off as a bit phony, acting like the media and everyone else is beneath him until it's benefitical to him moneywise and expousrewise to actually talk to them. I swear, I don't know of someone who is as bi-polar to reporters as he is. So at least with his retirement, I won't have to deal with the same crap I dealt with last training camp.

I don't think there is ANYTHING involving the phrase "Giants' Super Bowl rings" that ANY Patriot finds funny at all. Unless Osi Umenyoria is involved, I suppose.

I'm a huge Ravens' fan in MD and even I don't think it's a high profile retirement. He has retirement rumors surrounding him since about mid-season. I guess I just got used to the idea. Maybe he can now do more Gebco commercials with the dancing women.
