Ortiz comes in during the 4th round with a flurry of punches, gets overzealous and comes in with a headbutt. The fight is momentarily stopped and Ortiz is deducted a point. Ortiz then goes with psychological warfare and KISSES Mayweather on the cheek! It's a collective "WTF" from the room, but it gets some laughs.
The fight then starts up again, the two fighters seemingly make up, Ortiz has his attention on the ref, and Mayweather SUCKER PUNCHES THE SHIT OUT OF ORTIZ for the KO. What a bullshit ending.
The post-fight interview showed what a big, tough guy Mayweather is, when he gets in poor 70-year-old Larry Merchant's face and cusses him out. All because Larry had the temerity to ask about Manny Pacquiao. Merchant's reply to Mayweather cussing him out ("If I was 50 years younger, I'd kick your ass!) was a truly great moment.
In short, Floyd Mayweather: Classless Douchebag. But you already know that.
Wrong. That was the referee's fault. He should have put them in neutral corners after the point was deducted. Merchant was stumbling around that interview because he knew who to blame and they couldn't talk about it. Mayweather is an ass but in this situation, he wasn't dirty or wrong.

I thought it was hilarious. Ortiz landed an almost jumping headbutt, he deserved what he got. As for Larry, he's a pretty huge ass himself so I don't care much for him getting cussed out by Mayweather. Been wishing HBO would dump Larry for years.

Yep. "Protect yourself at all times" to which you could probably add "especially against a guy you just headbutted".
Floyd brings a lot of the flak he gets on himself on account of being a tool, but he wasn't in the wrong here.
He wasn't exactly in the right, though. I thought the first little left hook was his "get back"-punch at Victor, and I was fine with that, but the right hand was over the top and not sporting. Not that I expected different from PBF.

That's fair comment, but Ortiz knew what he was doing with the "hug n kiss" apology - he was trying to wind Floyd up to get him to fight angry instead of fighting smart. It worked insofar as he made him angry, worked less well in that angry Floyd knocked him out. If the positions were reversed and Ortiz had KTFO'd Floyd after a PBF headbutt + kiss I wouldn't have been able to stop laughing, so I can't be mad at Mayweather.

Out of the dozens of arguments I heard last night, this is the first time anyone's brought up that the referee should have put both fighters in neutral corners. That actually makes a lot of sense and I'm willing to concede that argument. The discussion shouldn't be so much on whether Floyd landed a cheap shot (and I stand by my opinion that they were cheap shots), but should Floyd have even had the opportunity to land those shots?
A day after the fact, the highlight of that night for me was still Larry Merchant.

Merchant is a worthless waste of oxygen. I cannot fathom what he brings to the table at this point.

I didn't see the fight, but I do know that even in the UFC, when there's a ref stoppage, the very first thing they do is send the fighters to neutral corners. I;m sure Herb Dean wouldn't have let it go down like that. EDIT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyTme7uM2jU
Looks like the ref did the hands together slap thing that signals "lets fight". Can't blame Floyd really.
Historical perspective: Jack Dempsey vs Jack Sharkey, July 21, 1927. Sharkey was leading in the fight after six rounds. In round seven, Dempsey connected with a low blow; Sharkey turned to the referee to complain, at which point Dempsey landed a left hook to Sharkey's jaw that ended the bout.
Afterwards, when asked why he threw the punch when Sharkey had obviously stopped boxing, Dempsey responded, "What was I supposed to do? Send him an engraved invitation [to fight]?"

He DID put them in neutral corners, and then he docked a point from Victor. Then they came together and had their little apology #2 and then I don't *think* the ref ever said "time in" in a super obvious way, but he apparently said it to everyone's post-fight satisfaction.
This isn't the first time Floyd's done that. FF to 3:25 in this video and you will see him do essentially thing to Arturo Gatti.

Any of you guys been watching Wimbeldon over the past week or so? I got the day off work today and saw Roger Federer absoulutely cream Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets. Hewitt fought back towards the end but couldn't answer to Federer's superior talent.
