Finally unveiled today at the E3 Convention:

I suppose I'm glad they finally changed up the controller a bit, but it looks a bit hard to control...

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. to Launch Its Next Generation Computer Entertainment System, in Spring 2006
Monday May 16, 7:30 pm ET
Unrivaled Performance With the Introduction of Cell Processor and Many Advanced Technologies, and Backwards Compatible With PlayStation(R) and PlayStation(R)2

LOS ANGELES, May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- At a press conference held in Los Angeles, California, today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) revealed the outline of its PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, incorporating the world's most advanced Cell processor with super computer like power. Prototypes of PS3 will also be showcased at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the world's largest interactive entertainment exhibition held in Los Angeles, from May 18th to 20th.
PS3 combines state-of-the-art technologies featuring Cell, a processor jointly developed by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba Corporation, graphics processor (RSX) co-developed by NVIDIA Corporation and SCEI, and XDR memory developed by Rambus Inc. It also adopts BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc ROM) with maximum storage capacity of 54 GB (dual layer), enabling delivery of entertainment content in full high-definition (HD) quality, under a secure environment made possible through the most advanced copyright protection technology. To match the accelerating convergence of digital consumer electronics and computer technology, PS3 supports high quality display in resolution of 1080p(*) as standard, which is far superior to 720p/1080i.

With an overwhelming computing power of 2 teraflops, entirely new graphical expressions that have never been seen before will become possible. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be far more refined and realistic, but landscapes and virtual worlds can also be rendered in real- time, thereby elevating the freedom of graphics expression to levels not experienced in the past. Gamers will literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large screen movies and experience the excitement in real-time.

In 1994, SCEI launched the original PlayStation® (PS), followed by PlayStation®2 (PS2) in 2000 and PlayStation®Portable (PSP®) in 2004, every time introducing the latest advancement in technology and bringing innovation to interactive entertainment software creation. Over 13,000 titles have been developed by now, creating a software market that sells more than 250 million copies annually. PS3 offers backward compatibility enabling gamers to enjoy these enormous assets from PS and PS2 platforms.

PlayStation family of products are sold in more than 120 countries and regions around the world. With cumulative shipments reaching more than 102 million for PS and approximately 89 million for PS2, they are the undisputed leaders and have become the standard platform for home entertainment. After 12 years from the introduction of the original PS and 6 years from the launch of PS2, SCEI brings PS3, the newest platform with the most advanced next generation computer entertainment technology.

With the delivery of Cell based development tools that has already begun, development of game titles as well as tools and middleware are in progress. Through collaboration with world's leading tools and middleware companies, SCEI will offer full support to new content creation by providing developers with extensive tools and libraries that will bring out the power of the Cell processor and enable efficient software development.

Preparations are under way for launch of PS3 and new generation software in the spring of 2006.

(*) 1080p/720p/1080i: "p" stands for progressive scan method, "i" stands

standard.

"SCEI has continuously brought innovation to the world of computer entertainment, such as real-time 3D computer graphics on PlayStation and the world's first 128 bit processor Emotion Engine (EE) for PlayStation 2. Empowered by the Cell processor with super computer like performance, a new age of PLAYSTATION 3 is about to begin. Together with content creators from all over the world, SCEI will accelerate the arrival of a new era in computer entertainment."

The black one doesn't look to bad.

But I'm highly dissapointed by the Bananna/Boomerang controller. But maybe it fits the hands well.

The use of the Spide-man font really bothers me. So many fonts and you pick one thats pretty recognizable?

Heh, I'm looking foward to it anyways though.

I am thoroughly befuddled how someone at Sony said "Hey, let's replace the industry-standard controller that's been our trademark for ten years with a BATARANG" and wasn't immediately fired.

Count me in as one of those who dislikes the controller; I'm just hoping that controllers will also be backward compatible.

I'm currently assuming that the controller is the lightning-rod that Sony is going to use to absorb all complaints about the system until we get nearer to actual launch. Then, they will have a "change of heart" and bring back the dual shock.

They're giving the fanboys something to bitch about so that they don't look too closely at the claims of "the power of a super computer"...

I'm holding off on judging, but I distinctly remember that same phrase used about the PS2 and it wasn't anywhere near the truth.

If Dual Shock 2s are compatible, all is well. (To make the PS3 efficiently backward-compatible, it'd have to be close, and the button layout looks similar.) If they're not, someone will likely come up with a $10 adapter to plug into the PS3 controller port and all will be well.

I wouldn't be stunned to see a proprietary plug for PS3 controllers, just so that they can sell more controllers when the system arrives, but it would disappoint me if they went that route.

In the meantime, show me the games and I'll be more interested.

Are there even plugs for the original Dual Shocks on this thing? I don't see them anywhere. Theres USB ports and Bluetooth Wireless slots though.

Like Zim said, maybe they're going for the Microsoft controler business model and putting out a crappy product we'll all pay for...and they we'll pay more for the better one later.

Although maybe it has something to do with that controller lawsuit they lost awhile back. Even though I wouldnt't think it would affect how it looks on the outside.

It looks like a laser printer.

And I'll probably not play one for at least a few years, if ever.

It's been said, but it can't be said enough: That controller looks like crap! I can't believe that I will have a controller that looks like that. I loved the PS2 controller.

And what can't be plugged into the back of the PS3? Seriously, there is about 200 slots on the back of that thing.

well, the cool thing about it is that if you get pissed and throw the controller, it'll come right back to you!

That is hilarious. Before I read this thread, I told myself, "They used the Spider-Man font and put a Batarang on it!" Then I read these posts and everyone else feels the same way.
It looks pretty freakin' stupid to me. I think the Revolution is a far more attractive machine but the 360 outshines the others.

I agree with all this, but if you have been watching G4 or been online, you can see that the P3 video game demos have been nothing short of amazing. Killzone 2 looks so crazy good, and PS3 has so many possibly great games coming out, that I can't see PS3 losing the new console war even if it looked like the Atari Lynx.

The real debate right now I see is whether some of these demos we are seeing are pre-rendered footage or if they are actual gameplay videos. If it is the latter, I'm buying the PS3 as soon as I can.

Oh man...I loved "Final Fantasy VII" video Sony released. It is tremendous and breathtaking, and makes one wonder how awesome older games would look if they were reworked and re-released for this system.

I, for one, would love to see a reworked version of Final Fantasy VIII, though.

Yes the PS3 footage looks incredible. Unfortunatly they went so hardware crazy with this system word is it's gonna cost $500. And the 360 demos are running at 1/4 power so we don't really know what it can do.

If it comes down to it there is no way in hell I'm spending $500 on the PS3 when I can get the 360 for probably $200 less and the Revolution for maybe even $300 less. I had a hard time justifying $300 for the PS2. That seemed a little crazy to me, but there wasn't really an alternative system in my view. Now we have a legit competitor in the 360.

Oh Sony's still gonna be in the lead, but boy are they ever making a mistake if they release it at that price point.

I read a report somewhere that said Sony would release it for no more than 50,000 yen, which I think puts it in the ballpark of $465 US or so.
