Is it possible for potential to be cultivated in the raider system? Seems like the guy never had a chance with the shifting coaching staffs in Washington.

The Raiders already have Kyle Boller, Charlie Frye, Bruce Gradkowski, and JaMarcus Russell on the roster.
I doubt they go into training camp with 5 QBs. Russell obviously seems to be the odd man out, as he was behind both Gradkowski and Frye by the end of the year. Boller was just signed a week ago with the news that Gradkowski tore a pectoral muscle and is going to miss some time.
I'd say Campbell and Gradkowski compete for the starting job, and Boller and Frye compete for the 3rd string job.
As a Raider fan, I love this. I'm not sure about the rest of the Nation, but I think it's a good thing. He has NFL experience, and we'll have him under contract for at least 2 more years. Obviously one of the qbs on the roster will have to go (please please be Jamarcus),but Campbell has the brains to learn any system they throw at him (he had a new system to learn every year at Auburn, and multiple systems in Washington), as well as excellent athletic ability. He's going to be a great Raider.
I'm pretty amped about our draft this year. It isn't our best one, but I think it's far from our worst. We have addressed a couple areas that we needed to improve on, those being O-line and QB and we shored up a defense that's going to be damn good this year.
Also he was traded for Oakland's 2012 4th round pick for some reason. As far as I know Oakland still has their 2011 4th rounder. Does Washington think Oakland will be worse in two years than they will be next year? Is Oakland hoping that they'll be better in two years than they will be next year?

Oakland better hope they're a better next year. The Pats own their first-rounder.

Sounds good to me, but I'd assume Frye's the other odd man out. He hasn't really done enough to merit beating out any of the other three (and I'll assume Campbell ends up starting, which would probably be the right move).

What career?
I know the Raiders aren't a perennial playoff team or anything but their offense when Gradkowski played looked miles better than anything the Redskins had. Clearly this is an improvement for Campbell's career.
I feel bad for Jason Campbell. If I'm remembering correctly, he went 12-0 in his senior season at Auburn, sweeping the SEC in the process, didn't get so much as a sniff at the national championship game, and other than getting drafted in the 1st round hasn't had a bit of good news since. And now it looks like his career could be spiraling further down the pooper. It's too bad, he seems like a genuinely nice, stand-up guy too.
In my mind, Campbell is the no-doubt starter in Oakland. Bill Simmons summed him up best in a podcast the other day --- Campbell is pretty much the most average QB in the league, and thus gets overlooked since it's more fun to talk about great QBs or awful QBs.
Given that Oakland looked much better even with a below-average QB like Gradkowski last season, putting Campbell behind center might bump the Raiders up to being a .500 team or maybe even a darkhorse playoff contender.
Wouldn't the Raiders have been better off giving Pittsburgh their number one pick for Roethlisberger? (That is if the Steelers were actually serious in trading him)

Even if you put aside the six game suspension, which really would have hurt the Raiders because they already traded their 2011 #1 pick, Big Ben is a risk with the new emphasis on head injuries.
I'm not a big fan of my favorite football team (Skins) finally getting rid of a garbage QB...to my second favorite team (Raidahs). This is like Norv Turner all over again.

For the record, ESPN's John Clayton is speculating that JaMarcus Russell might be headed to the UFL due to lack of interest in his services after he gets released. Yikes.

It's not impossible to win in Oakland, I remember seeing them in the Super Bowl this decade.
JaMarcus Russell going to the UFL would be perfect in my mind. I have read reports that he was previously unmotivated and out of shape. I refuse to feel sorry for him because he had his chances. And that $36 million he has earned to date will make for a very nice plan B. Unless of course he handles his money like Derrick Coleman or Antoine Walker.

Such a shame that the injuries stalled his career. He played hurt way more than your average QB would have. Enjoy the retirement Steve! You deserve it!
