Jim Cornette is in the ring -- he invites all of the TNA champions to come down! That's "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal, Team 3D, and Kurt Angle! Cornette says that at the next PPV (Victory Road, July 15), the Main Event will be THE MATCH OF CHAMPIONS. Here's how it works:
- It's a one-fall tag match, with the World Champ teaming up with the X Division Champ to take on the Tag Champs.
- If one of the Tag Champs wins by pinning one of the other guys, he wins that guy's belt. So if Devon pins Angle, Devon is the new World Champion, or if Bubba pins Lethal, Bubba is the new X Division Champion!
- If the World Champ of the X Division Champ wins the match by pinning one of the Tag Champs, he wins both tag belts, and may then pick a partner of his choosing with whom to hold and defend the belts.
(I like it. It's not convoluted, and has some interesting possibilities.)
Angle has a question at this point -- when will Cornette pull his head out of his ass? Angle is upset that he didn't get champagne, balloons, and a red carpet to celebrate his title win -- nevertheless, he's going to make his "Oscar acceptance" speech. He pulls out some notes. This is a pretty great promo -- Angle is in full-on "Three I's" heel mode, thanking himself multiple times, thanking the Good Lord for giving the unwashed masses such a great role model, and really telling off the Asylum crowd. He ends by saying, "oh -- it's real, it's damn real, thank you."
Jim Cornette grabs the mic back and really lets Kurt have it, telling him that the hard part isn't winning the title, it's keeping it. In fact, This week and for the next two weeks, there will be title matches for each title -- if you win, great, but if you lose, you lose both your title and your chance to be in the Match of Champions at Victory Road! Angle has his match next week (against Christian Cage and Rhino, it's announced later), but Lethal has his match tonight -- against Chris Sabin and Samoa Joe!
Eric Young & Rhino vs. James Storm & Robert Roode: This is a super fast-paced match that's over in about two minutes, with Jackie Moore jumping on Rhino's back and distracting him, allowing Storm to hit the Superkick for the win. The match looks like its purpose is to kickstart something with Rhino, who goes berserk after the match, shoving Eric Young over, throwing chairs around, and destroying the announce table.
Chris Harris vs. Raven: Another angle-driven match that's over in about two minutes: Raven is accompanied by only two-thirds of Serotonin, Havok and Martyr; Kaz runs in partway through, taking out both of them and then, with a flying springboard clothesline, Raven as well, allowing Harris to get the pin with the Catatonic.
As I've said before, if this leads to a good singles push for Kaz, then I could care less about what happens to the rest of Serotonin. (I mean, another viable tag team would be great, but I am not holding my breath.)
Christian Cage is backstage and cuts a promo calling out Chris Harris. At the end, someone scares Cage from offscreen, and a hand blocks the camera lens.
We cut back to Mike Tenay and Don West, who are wondering what's going on backstage. As they are discussing this, we see, in the background, Abyss hurling Cage out of the entranceway and down the ramp! That was an awesome shot! Comic timing! Abyss goes after Cage with a barbed wire bat, but AJ Styles and Tomko save the day -- Styles and Tomko end up getting dropped by Abyss, but Cage has already hightailed it up the ramp.
Here's a promo from James Mitchell about his NEW monster! We get shots of hands -- a drawing of a demon that might be a tattoo -- long hair, maybe? -- yeah, I dunno who it is. Mitchell says he searched long and hard for this guy -- "he is coming" -- and Mitchell calls him "my son" (but I'm pretty sure that's poetic license).
Black Machismo vs. Chris Sabin vs. Samoa Joe: This is for the X Division Champion, as well as for a slot in the Match of Champions. Another really fast-paced match. Among the highlights: Joe with a suicide dive onto both Sabin and Lethal; Sabin hits the Hesitation Dropkick on Lethal; Joe hits Sabin with an Atomic Drop, one-legged dropkick, and a Senton; Lethal goes up to hit the elbow on Joe, but Sabin shoves him off, causing Lethal to hit his face on the apron on the way down.
Joe is still down at this point, so Sabin goes up to the second rope; Joe is back up and SOMEHOW manages to kick Sabin in the head! MUSCLEBUSTER on Sabin for the pin -- JOE IS THE NEW X DIVISION CHAMPION.
So at this point, Joe is set to team with Angle against 3D at Victory Road. I can't imagine that they won't win (mostly because the prospect of either member of 3D holding either of the other belts is too horrible to contemplate), but who will capture the tag titles? And who will he choose as his partner?
I'm really pleased that TNA is continuing to make the shows center around wrestling, and the main event matches continue to be people fighting to be allowed to participate in the main event of the next PPV. Simple and straightforward, and results in some pretty good matches. Good stuff.

hummmm where have I heard that before? I remember now didn't this happen back in like 97? with The sandman, cold Scorpio and the PE

Sounds like someone at TNA might have 24/7.
I would bet that 3D drops the belts to someone else before the next PPV. Maybe Sting and Abyss team up? Or Christian and Tomko? Christian and AJ would be ideal.

I feel bad for Lethal. If this somehow leads to a Lethal/Dutt tag title win as some kinda belt switch for if Joe wins the tag titles too it'd be ok, but all that does is kinda mingles and waters down the X and tag divisions. Granted, all the matches have been/will be good, but Black Machismo had a bit of a rubbish run there.

Demonstrations are a drag. Besides, we're much too high
Yeah so? Everything done in the TNA or WWE has been done before, or at least everything good.
- Joe winning X Title is good, it won't be worth much unless they are serious about keeping it strong after Joe is done, but at least for now it's with somebody who matters and the champion will be in a ppv main event again.
- Joe and Angle has been booked well lately, too bad they couldn't have done this during their first three matches.
- Is it possible Team 3D could lose before the ppv? I guess the only World/X Title combo I can think of Christian/AJ but it looks like Christian has his hands full right now.
- I'm REALLY looking forward to Christian vs. Chris Harris, best heel and face for the past two months or so.
- So far my guess is that the ppv is going to be Angle/Joe vs. Team 3D, Christian vs. Chris Harris, AJ Styles vs. Abyss, Lethal/Dutt vs. Motor City Machine Guns. Pretty strong top three matches and a good (probably) opener. These are the kind of cards TNA should have instead of using their 6 to 8 best wrestlers all in the main event.

And seen as recently as last week on 24/7.
I am fine with rehashing old angles, as long as it leads to good matches. All of the great stories have been done, but sometimes some of the more effective stories are the simple ones. Like, I hate you, you hate me, and the only way to settle it is with VIOLENCE. It doesn't have to be Shakespeare.

1995 must have been the year for that stip, as HBK and Diesel vs. Yoko and Owen, no...Davey Boy, no wait..THERE'S Owen at one of the In Your House PPVs did pretty much the same thing. Just without the picking a tag partner part.

Some (not all and definitely not the comedies) of Shakespeare's plots are pretty simple.

TNA will never die. If it died in front of me, and I had to be the caretaker for its tomb for the rest of my life, I would die waiting for some other money mark to swoop in and invest in it.
