"LAKE FOREST, Ill. (March 13, 2003) -- The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with quarterback Kordell Stewart on a two-year contract. Terms of the deal were not announced.
The 2001 Pro Bowl participant joins the Bears after spending his first eight NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
A serious question: WHY ARE THE BEARS NOT DRAFTING BYRON LEFTWICH? At this point, he has infinitely more potential then Kordell has. I have a feeling this mistake is going to haunt the Bears down the road. They sure as hell better draft somebody good if they're not going with Leftwich.
On the positive side, that's probably 2 more games the Lions stand a chance at winning next year.
In case of nuclear radiation, stand directly behind your door, but do not open the door, even if the radiation knocks.
Who said anything about the Bears not wanting Leftwich? Rookie QBs take a year or two to get used to the NFL level. And how long is the Stewart contract? Two years. It wouldn't surprise me if he was the QB of the present, with Leftwich being the QB of the future.
I also don't get why people are knocking the Bears for signing Stewart. Their only other option was Griese, and they would have either had to trade for him, or wait until June 1st.

Supposedly, the Bears management's belief is that if they could get Kordell(or Plummer, but they never really stood a chance at getting him), they wouldn't draft Leftwich, and would instead wait until the later rounds and pick up someone like Ragone or Simms. I just can't see either of those two having the potential of Leftwich.
Even then, I'd say 2 years of a developing Leftwich would probably be better than 2 years of Kordell.

Dave Ragone and Chris Simms will both go in the first 3 rounds. Having seen Ragone all his 4 years in 'Ville I can tell you the man is a first round pick. Simms has all the tools and I bet Dallas takes him in the second round. So if the Bears think they are going to get a good QB on the second day- they be reaching.
Kingsbury from Texas Tech may still be on the board- but his accuracy on long throws is pitiful. And then Dorsey will still be there, but it looks like he hasn't the tools.

Yikes, on the nfl website it says that one of the reasons the Bears went for him is that they were impressed with the way he handled being benched.
WTF?! The guy cried to all and sundry about how he was a starter and it was clear waaaayyyy before the Steelers season was over that he wasn't gonna be hanging around. The only time the guy looked anything other than disinterested on the sidelines any time I saw him was when he was wallowing in self-pity.
How in the name of the wee man is that impressive? The guy should have been responding to the challenge and raising his game to PROVE he was a starter. Man does he ever piss me off.
On the bright side I suppose if his attitude at being benched was a factor then the Bears may be considering doing this themselves in the future. ;)

I read that Stewart wasn't sure if he wanted to sign with the Bears because he had a feeling Chicago would take a QB in the second round (possibly Rex Grossman). That's why he was also considering going to Arizona before they signed Blake. When Arizona signed Blake, Stewart decided to go with Chicago because it was his only shot at starting in the NFL.

Seeing how the Bears have fared with their drafted quarterbacks (McNown, Moreno, etc.), Leftwich's golden arm would probably turn to lead the first time he suited up in Loser Blue.

The Bears haven't had even a decent QB since they screwed Flutie over in 1986. Before that, McMahon was the only quality QB since Bobby Douglas, and McMahon was injured 50% of the time (thank god for Steve Fuller in the 1985 Super Bowl season). Harbaugh and Evans had their moments, but it's a shame Walter Payton never benefited from the threat of a deep passing game (McMahon included).

You guys in Pittburgh may have hated Stewart and ran him out of town, but I'm overjoyed we've finally got a legitimate star pro QB. The only thing I'm sure he'll miss about Pittsburgh is Permanti Brothers. The pastrami sandwich with the cole slaw, french fries and Russian dressing (on the sandwich) at 4 in the morning is the best damn thing in town (the cheese fries at the Dirty O are pretty good also).
On Leftwich, sure he throws it a country mile and has a brilliant mind, but he's had a broken leg the last 3 years running. I wanted him badly last fall, but he's so damn injury prone. Maybe 2 years backing up Stewart will allow him to strengthen his legs.

You count Bobby Douglas as a decent quarterback? Yea, he could run, but his passes were so hard no one could catch them. That's why he became a pitcher in the White Sox organization. This is bringing back memories of my youth wondering why they just didn't put Payton under center and eliminate the middleman!
McNown was suspect from the beginning. I went to a Pac 10 university (U of Arizona) and got to see the guy play in person. His arm was widely known to be garbage, and he was never the most intelligent QB. I shook my head when he even got drafted. His recieving core in 98 made him look much better than he was. Those guys were the ones that really got him drafted. If the Bears wanted a solid pick that year, they should have drafted the offensive coordinater of UCLA instead of dear old Cade.

I would have posted sooner, but it took me 30 or so min to get past the flashbacks from Nick's list. Seriously, that thing hurt like hell to read, esp. since I remember how many of those guys Bear fans actually invested hope in. For God's sake there were people calling WSCR actually wanting MOSES MORENO to start! While I am not sure I agree on the idea that Kordell brings anything to the table, particularly in the Shoop offense, I do know that he is better than Steve Stenstrom, P.T. Willis, Will Furrer, and Sean Payton combined
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go try not to have nightmares about the idea that someone thought it was a good idea to give Rick Mirer a starting job. Oh well, we have a great history at MLB and RB ;)
