Many, many years from now. Probably never. Especially if Big Show gets the title as you suggest.
I think the WWE definitely sees something in the guy but he's really hard to take seriously as some white-boy rapper. How far can he go with his gimmick? People portrayed as ass-kickers get championships, not wiggers.
"Well, as they say, 'If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.'"
"I'm allergic to citrus."
"In your case, 'if life gives you lemons, swell up and die.'"
I definitely disagree. It will be within the next year. CENA is the only can't miss new player on the Smackdown side and the WWF will legitimize his gimmick if need be. He has more charisma than Rock did early in his career and Rock went thru a few different variations of his gimmick. Cena could easily be changed from what you call "wigger" to just a punk. Cena is earning cheers thru his work as a heel just as Rock has. Cena will be champion sooner than later.
Within next year? With a crammed main event program? Nah, Rock had to work in a couple of years before his first title. How long has Cena been at this? He may be over, but I just can't see this guy getting there now. Not with Angle, Show, Brock, and whoever else proven they'd like to add to the mix. Cena's just trying to get through this dead-end gimmick.

How about when he starts putting on good matches. I mean he's no bum or anything in the ring but he doesn't put on main event caliber stuff. When guys like Stone Cold, The Rock, Benoit, Angle, and Eddie wrestle, especially on a ppv, and even moreso as teh main event, they ALWAYS put on something good. While Cena has excellent mic skills he doesn't have that great match ability yet.
Besides like people said Big Show, Angle, Lesnar, and maybe even Taker will be on top for a while. After that Benoit and Eddie should be. Then maybe sometime after that Cena and Matt will be ready.
I say Cena DOES get the title, but remember that Shawn Michaels & Bret Hart both paid their dues as tag wrestlers, then as midcarders, then finally got pushed up to the uppercard later in their careers. Hell, hardly ANYBODY wins the title before they're 30. Except for The Rock & Brock Lesnar. Exceptions to the rule.
Your winner and 3-time Stanley Cup Champion...the New Jersey Devils! Their title defense begins in 4 months!
Its really hard to say because of unexpected injuries and departures. If everyone stays healthy, I'd say probably a year or two down the road for Cena.
What Cena has going for him is that he's homegrown so he'll get a look long before any of the ex-WCW'ers. I'd say that Edge would probably be the next new young champion because he'll be as over as ever coming off his injury.
I really doubt Chris Benoit will ever get more then a token run. If it was going to happen, it would have happened by now.
They really need to strap a rocket to Eddie Guerrero's back and milk that huge hispanic audience for all it's worth.
I'd bet that Cena holds the US championship this year with occasional skirmishes in the WWE title scene. If Cena keeps evolving like he has been, he'll probably have a small run with the big belt in late '04 / early '05.
He really reminds me of Kurt Angle when he first debuted. Angle won the championship in his first year (like Brock) but he's a freak like that and he had to go through a long run in the IC / European title scene before getting there.
IIRC, Taker and Brock are the only guys who've gotten to the World championship without going through the midcard titles first.

Either that or at around this time next year.
Perhaps he's going for a japanese vibe.
Another waste of a post for me, yay.
I say Cena will be champ within 3 years. I think they're keepin the guys they have now in the ME until after Mania next year, and I don't know if Cena fits into that - so I say 2005 he should be in good position.
As for this being a dead-end gimmick, I don't see that at all. The crowd is always hanging on every word he says - it's GOLDEN. And it's good because he can easily tweak it to make it more serious when he moves deeper in the card. I mean, he's got good intensity - when he gets that ME shot, all he has to do is tone down the wardrobe and the wiggery catchphrases - not totally get rid of them. He can still be himself.
i don't know about the WWE's long term planning, but it maybe useful to hold off on some guys until Wrestlemania XX. Wrestlemania can be the big blowoff where it's the last time you see the big time/legends wrestle a legitimate match. After tbat let the new generation take over.
I agree. I think they need to bill Wrestlemania 20 as the End of One Era, but the Beginning of a New Era. I think that guys like Undertaker, HBK, Hogan (c'mon, you just KNOW he's coming back) and Flair should tie things up at 'Mania, while guys like Angle, Lesnar, Cena, and others, should have their coming out party.
As for when Cena will wear the big belt, I say by Survivor Series 2004...
Cena is headed down the Public Enemy, Scotty Too Hotty, Rikishi gimmick highway. The WWE is sure to drive this into the ground and most people will be tired of the gimmick before he gets built up enough to contend for the title. That is if you aren't tired of him already.
Oh yeah and the guy can't wrestle very well either.

I completely disagree. Cena can be molded into so many more things. And he is actually GOOD at that gimick. He also has an amazing physique. Cena is a young guy(25 I think), and has a lot of time left in the business. He won't be the champ anytime soon, he needs to improve a lot, but he will. "He can't wrestle very well" Hmm, well, I'm not all that impressed by Brock Lesnar or Goldberg, and they've had titles. Since when does being big get you out of wrestling. Brock will improve, and Goldber, well I don't care. What do you think the WWE will make of his guarantee of a main event at WMXX, he's still talking about it, watch Byte This. That could really bite him in the ass. The WWE might feel a little obligated to give him a ME.(although at mania, there can be more than one ME, at least that's what they say.)
Well, I've been trying to mentally book the Angle/Lesnar fued to get a final blow-off match at Wrestlemania and the way I see it, Angle wins the belt at Summerslam, and then they're going to need an intermediary to transition the belt back to Brock Lesnar by Wrestlemania. Given the WWE's penchant for trying out a new champion towards the end of the year (Lesnar, Jericho, Angle, Show, Rock, Foley, etc.), it seems like the two likely cantidates are Cena and Benoit. So, I'd say, maybe before the year is over.
Well....I gues Heyman was behind the O'Haire push because Sean has definitely disappeared. I remember when we were all posting all geeked up about the O'Haire character when they started the vignettes.
