Butch Davis, coach of the Cleveland Browns, chose Kelly Holcomb over Tim Couch for the starting QB job. At least the fans get what they want, but does this make Couch a complete waste of a very high draft pick?

The Tim Couch era is over in Cleveland. He will land in either Seattle or Carolina next year. I still think Couch can be an effective NFL quarterback somewhere- just not in Cleveland.

If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six-gun in my holster, I'd carry a soldering iron. That way, if some smart-aleck cowboy said something like "Hey, look. He's carrying a soldering iron!" and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, "That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice." Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.
Why would you think he'd end up in Seattle? With Hasselbeck and Dilfer under contract in '04 Couch would be no better than third-string, and who can spend valuable salary cap dough on an expensive 3rd-stringer?
I wonder if he'll end up with Parcells in Dallas. They had a guy on the radio from Cleveland who said Couch was a tough player but not tough when it came to dealing with fans and outside stuff. Parcells could probably toughen him up, if anyone could.

Plus, I dont think Chad hutchinson or Quincy the Lisp is the answer for Big D. Couch might make a great fit for Parcells. Hell, he made Bledsoe a Super Bowl QB.

He is a Mike Holgrem kinda a quarterback- more so than Hassleback or Dilfer. He is big, strong, and accurate- perfect for a west coast style like Holgrem runs. Plus I am not yet sold on Hassleback as a legit day in day out starter.
Trent Dilfer does have a Super Bowl Ring- but he owes that ring to his defense. The only thing Dilfer did was not lose the game by throwing picks. Dilfer is a smart quarterback, but Seattle does not have Baltimore's defense so he sure isn't going to lead them to a title anytime soon.
Dallas is another logical choice I hadn't thought of. Couch doesn't seem like a Parcells kind of guy though. I like Couch- I even played against him once in high school (Leslie County 54 Russell 6- yeah it was close), but he does have a tendency to be soft. He fits in more with a laid back west coast style of coach like Holgrem.

Good Lord. I know Seattle is way out here away from everybody, but could you know LESS about our QB situation? To wit,
1. Mike Holmgren traded a first-round pick to Green Bay for Hasselbeck and a lower first-round pick. Then, right away, he gave Hasselbeck a four-year contract comparable to a rookie first-round pick's with a low starting salary and easy to hit escalators to make it worth $5 million annually. Does that sound like the decisions of a coach/GM dealing with a QB who is not "his kinda quarterback"? The guy who was here when Holmgren first got here (Jon Kitna) wasn't Holmgren's kind of QB, so he was jettisoned by Holmgren at the first opportunity. Also, Hasselbeck is 6' 4" (big), 223 lbs. (strong), and had a 63.7% completion percentage last year (accurate).
2. While I agree with your major points on Dilfer, when he was here during Hasselbeck first year and got playing time the 'Hawks were quite good offensively, and if Holmgren had gone ahead and made Dilfer the starter earlier than week 16 they would've likely made the playoffs in 2001. Furthermore, with Dilfer as the starting QB the 2002 Seahawks were looking to go places, and with Dilfer at the helm they came out and rocked the house offensively in the first preseason game...until Dilfer got hurt and the Seahawks ended up having to re-turn to the inexperienced Hasselbeck and enduring his growing pains until he went lights out the last six weeks.
Botttom line: Holmgren already went through a bunch of issues with Hasselbeck for a year-and-a-half until something in Hasselbeck "clicked" (he admits as much) and they Seahawks became an offesive force at the end of last year. Why would he bring in Couch just to do it all again. Homgren likes his QBs not named Brett Favre to play HIS way, and they have to get to that point where they can do it to be effective. However, Hasselbeck is the NUMBER ONE GUY here now, and Holmgren isn't going to be around if he and the team struggle this year anyway.

I was not aware the Hassleback "clicked." Thanks for the info- I don't follow the Seahawks- here in Kentucky we leave that to DrewDuece- so I was not aware of all the back story up there.
I was just going on the one or two times last year I saw Hassleback play. I knew Holmgrem gave up a lot for him, but to me he didn't look all that special. I didn't see Seattle on TV around here at all late in the year. Just saw the highlights on Primetime- and Hassleback looked good-but I guess the impression from the beginning of the season stuck with me.
And for some reason had it etched in my apparently horrible memory that Hassleback was lanky and little. Next time I think will actually look it up- that will make me look less stupid ;-)

I was thinking about this decision yesterday when it occurred to me - the Brownies this year remind me of the Rams when they won their recent Super Bowl. All offense (with exception of their offensive line), suspect defense. Sure, they had to score tons of points to win, but they could, and did. I just wonder if this is what really drove the decision, since Holcomb really seems to have shown that he can spur the offense better than Couch. In that regard, Holcomb reminds me of Kurt Warner - not terribly mobile, but has a great arm and is very smart with the offense.
As a Browns fan, I am really happy with this move and can only hope that the defensive shortcomings so far will be addressed in the next 2 weeks. I don't see Couch getting traded anytime soon unless there is a blockbuster deal offered. After all, both QB's were injured last year, and Josh Booty is just not there yet. After this year though, all bets are off.

The difference is that William Green is no Marshall Faulk. I think the Browns have a playoff year in them, but that'll be no cakewalk.

Yecch. I think the defense actually regressed this game. Anytime Harrington started to move, the LB's and DB's broke off their coverage and started pursuing him - except he hadn't passed the line of scrimmage yet. Just awful, awful defense. At least the offense still looked good, except for the fumbleriffic-ness of the ball. And what was up with the non-arm-going-forward call on Holcomb's so-called "fumble"?
They'd better get some real good practice in these next two weeks...
